Breath of Magic

She was anxious to get home and see about her sisters. They must be so worried she thought as she and Ty drove into the countryside in his four-wheel-drive SUV. For some funny reason, her Porsche wouldn’t start so he’d insisted on taking her home. Truthfully, she wasn’t all that unhappy about it. She’d wasted so much time being bitter and she didn’t plan to let him out of her sight for a very long time.

Darkness had settled over the countryside by the time they pulled up near the front door of the ranch house. Ty turned off the ignition and pulled her close. “Can we talk for just a minute? Before you go in?”

She smiled. “Sure. What do you want to talk about?”

Tyler’s dark eyes burned with intensity as he looked down at her. “The future. I’ll be damned if I’m going to give you up now that I’ve found you again. Want me to set up shop in Dallas? Want to stay here? Want to tell me to go straight to hell for messing with your life? What? Tell me. Call me a willow. I’ll bend for you.”

Love zinged through her heart like a shot of one-hundred-proof whiskey. Her bones melted. “Look in the front window, Tyler.”

  “It’s beautiful.”

The Christmas tree dominated the window, its lights clearly visible, twinkling merrily for anyone who might happen to pass by.

“It looks like home to me.”

Tyler gripped her arms, ran his thumbs over her collarbone. “Like home? What are you telling me, honey?”

“Home isn’t Dallas, Tyler. I don’t think it ever was. All I have there is a fancy job and a beautiful, lonely, empty house. It’s not home. This is home. This place, these people and you.” She reached up with one finger and stroked it down the stubble on his cheek. “What do you say, Counselor? Think we could hang another shingle outside that old Victorian? Tyler Blackwell and Liza Woodward, Attorneys-at-Law?”

Tyler grinned then placed a tender kiss on her lips. “Mmm. Sounds like a plan but I have one little change in mind.”

  “Oh yeah?”

“Yeah. I think it should say, Tyler Blackwell and Liza Woodward Blackwell, Attorneys at Law? What do you think?”

She kissed him and her heart opened wide. Christmas and love and homecoming filled her heart with a joy she’d never known before. Glancing at the Christmas tree winking in the front window, she looked back at the love of her life and felt her eyes fill with tears. “I think it’s a sound plan, Counselor. Wanna be partners?”

  “Oh yeah, honey. For always.”
