And so will her future with Viktor.
Chapter 1
I shivered the moment he walked into the bar, an overwhelming urge to attack rippling through my skin in response.
Willing myself still, I tried not to turn and look in the direction of the vampire. But as he sauntered into the space, searching for his prey, I spared a quick glance through the mirrors lined up behind the watered-down alcohol. Perfectly styled light brown hair, sharp facial features, an athletic body, a smile fit for the cover of any magazine. Only the slight reflection of light in his blue eyes revealed his true nature.
Although, I was the only person in this popular college bar who knew what he really was. To the rest of the patrons, he probably looked like a relatively new graduate just starting to find his place in society. I pondered that thought as I watched his instinctual charm and perfect smile take immediate effect. He surveyed the crowd, keen eyes searching, hunting. A table of young female coeds nudged each other, jaws dropping in admiration as the message was passed between them.
Their eyes never left the vampire’s lean form. And he noticed. Of course. This was what he was here for. This is what all vampires thrived on—the thrill of the seduction and the primal instinct of the hunt. Predator and prey. Basic science in its rawest form.
I’d been waiting several hours for his appearance, and even now as I watched his reflection, I found myself taken aback by his beauty. Piercing light blue eyes that rivaled the colors of shallow, tropical ocean flats. Porcelain skin that nearly glowed with a radiance so magnificent it could stop the next breath. Sometimes I felt sad for the regular humans who couldn’t see these traits. The vampires tried to hide their differences. Just like my kind did.
“You need another, Sophia?” asked Frank, pointing at the half empty beer bottle in my clenched hand. The bartender and owner of the tiny bar always took care of me.
Pulling my attention back to Frank, I replied, “No thanks. I’m good.”
“Looks like someone’s going to get lucky tonight,” Frank said as he nodded toward the vampire. I turned on my stool just in time to see the young females pull the creature into the only extra seat. Frank continued wiping the counter as he observed the table. “Some guys have all the luck. Good looking, young, and full of stamina” he scoffed.
“It’s not about luck,” I mumbled under my breath.
I continued to watch the vampire socialize with the females in the sunken pit where the small tables were arranged. One girl sat on each side of him and three more leaned onto the table, laughing and flirting and vying for his attention. The one on his left appeared to be the alpha female. Tall and thin with long black hair, she continued to toss it over her shoulder every chance she had. In a way, we looked kind of similar. Plus she was wearing a low-cut red mini-dress that even I coveted.
The vampire appeared to be enjoying the view, although he flashed his perfect smile at the entire table at each appropriate moment. Taking them all in, I knew the moment he selected his mark. Not the alpha, or the blonde hanging on his right arm and rubbing her plastic breasts on him. No, he was focused on the petite brunette across the table. Not as outgoing as her friends and very different in body type, she didn’t have that outwardly confidence exuding from the others.
A perfect target.
Realizing she was quickly becoming the focus of his attention and charming face, she began sipping her cosmopolitan with a greater urgency. Liquid courage—the prescription for every awkward social situation. And I had no doubt that was part of the reason why the vampire had chosen her.
“Well, at least they’re enjoying themselves.” Frank said behind me as he disrupted my concentration again. “Why don’t I ever see you hanging out with other people your age? You seem to spend a lot of time by yourself in here. That can’t be much fun.”
“I am having lots of fun, Frank,” I rebutted, perhaps a little too brusque. Toning it down a bit I teased, “Besides, where else would I be able to have such stimulating conversations with a wise elder?”
Now in his early sixties, Frank had inherited The Red House Bar from his uncle when he was thirty. With shaggy, graying hair and tie-dyed tee shirts the only type of clothing he owned, it was obvious that he was still stuck in the flower-power generation. But his bar did well, hosting live bands almost ev
ery night and becoming one of the more popular spots for the “young and hip” crowd as Frank called them. That also made this an ideal hunting ground for vampires. And for vampire hunters like me.
“Cool it on the age innuendos. I just worry about you sometimes. Aren’t you at that age where you should be settling down with a husband, a white picket fence, and popping out a bunch of babies?” Frank suggested with a smirk on his face.
“Not the life I want, Frank,” I said, rolling my eyes and giving him my best disgusted look. “Why does everyone seem to think that the second any female reaches the age of twenty-five that she automatically wants to find the perfect mate and spawn? Why can’t people understand that there’s nothing wrong with being a single female who actually enjoys being single and successful?” This was not the first time I’d had this exact conversation, and it didn’t take much to get me going. Frank knew this all too well.
“Relax Sophia,” he chuckled. “I just want to make sure that you’re happy and getting the most out of life that you can.”
“Well, thanks dad,” I joked as he walked away to wait on another customer. It was easy to talk to Frank. And I really did feel like he was a good friend. I didn’t have many close friends. Perhaps a hazard of my profession. It’s difficult to maintain relationships when you can’t be truthful about the way you spend your evenings and earn your money. Sure, I occasionally had a “day job”, but I was destined for my career since the day I was born. I had no choice.
Turning my attention back to the vampire and his new harem, I noticed that his shift in focus to the brunette had caused a bit of friction among the girl friends. The two parasites who initially attached to his arms, had since become distracted by a couple of guys sitting nearby. Seeing their games work better on the drunken frat boys, they quickly forgot about the vampire. Despite a few glances back to him and their friend, they tried to redeem their busted egos by seducing the next best thing. It certainly made me realize how much I didn’t miss that kind of social lifestyle.
Although as I observed these interactions, I couldn’t help wonder if I should be more like them. Should I be out there actively seeking the perfect mate? Should I be craving babies and a life-long partner? Maybe there was something wrong with me. Maybe my genetic predisposition to be a vampire hunter had also squashed all basic maternal instincts. We didn’t typically have long lives after all. It was a dangerous job and many didn’t make it into their forties. Perhaps there was something lacking in my life.
Damn it, Frank. I shook my head to chase those kinds of thoughts away. Why did he have to have conversations like that with me when I was working? I needed to focus. Like now. And stop wondering if I could have a life I was never destined for.
Heading my advice, I continued to watch the vampire charm the brunette. As a supernatural being, they weren’t able to compel or entrance people as the legends claimed. But they did have a natural charisma that made it easy for their victims to take them all in.
That was why they were all chosen.
The brunette smiled demurely, giggling and touching his arm in a flirtatious way. Her drink had been refreshed, another hunting tool for vampires and men alike. As the band announced they were playing their last song, I saw the vampire motion to the exit and the brunette shrug in approval. He helped her get up as she downed the rest of her drink. They appeared to say their goodbyes to her friends, even as one of them gave her the universal “Are you sure you want to do this?” look behind the vampire’s back. The brunette waved off her friend and the two of them began to make their way through the crowd to the side exit door.
Crap. I was on the far side of the narrow brick townhome-turned-bar. Throwing some cash on the bar, I yelled good-bye to Frank, and grabbed my purse. I pushed my way through the rowdy crowd high on the energy of the band’s last song. Ignoring a few suggestive comments and accidental hand brushes against my ass, I finally made it the front entrance and immediately walked to the left toward the alley with the side exit.
Frank’s bar was the last in the row of townhouses, so the adjacent alley contained the fire escapes and dumpsters. The empty backstreet was dark, very dark, so I knew this was where he would bring her.
Vampires did need to drink blood to survive, but they didn’t need to kill their prey to get their fix. Most often the victims wouldn’t have any indication or memory of blood being taken from them. Instead, they would have a nasty hangover the next morning and perhaps a small bruise where they’d been bitten. Usually they couldn’t recall anything except for the intense feeling of ecstasy that came from the bite. However, there had recently been an increase in deaths near this area, which most often meant that there was a rogue vampire in town. Since this was a territory I frequented, I was assigned to keep watch at Frank’s as it was thought that the vampire may be hunting there. And I suspected I had him in my sight tonight.
As soon as I turned toward the alley, I felt the magic. Pulses of electricity danced over my skin, the sex in the air tempting even me. I wasn’t magical by definition, but my birthright granted me skills needed to detect, hunt, and kill vampires. I could sense how the vampire was seducing his victim with his magically enhanced charisma, but I also knew that I had a distinct edge. He wouldn’t be able to detect me—another gift from our legacy. Only a hunter and their maker could destroy the vampires. A fluke of nature my kind always took advantage of.
Being as quiet as possible, I fumbled through my giant bag trying to find my weapon of choice. Despite having a knife sheathed to my ankle and a dagger strapped to my chest, I needed something better. After a few seconds, I found what I was looking for—my stake. Made of ash, it would be perfect to work with in this tight space.
Sneaking around the corner, stake in hand, I searched for my vampire. The darkened alley didn’t help, but the small flood light off of the bar’s side exit door provided enough light for me to identify his location. There, next to the fire escape and facing away from the alley’s entrance, I saw them.
The small brunette was lying on her back, her body draped over the first few metal stairs and her dress pulled down far enough to expose her ample breasts. The vampire held himself above her quivering body, gently pressing kisses to her neck, mouth, and chest. She moaned in pleasure each time his lips brushed her skin, the sensation and excitement thickening the air with a fog of pheromones. I licked my lips, an automatic response that I hated. This woman didn’t stand a chance, and from the way she hiked her dress up and guided his hand underneath, I knew she was a lost cause.
To anyone else, their actions may have looked like a heated make-out session between two willing adults. But I knew what he was doing. She quickly became enthralled with the magic released with each kiss and nibble. It didn’t take much for a human to succumb, the magic too powerful and too quick. And this vampire took full advantage of his talents, rendering her limp in no time at all.
I slipped into the shadow next to the dumpster, just a few feet away. The smell of rotten food and human waste should have overwhelmed my senses, but I was too focused. I could tell that the girl was on the verge of passing out, but the vampire had no intentions of stopping. When he lifted his head to savor the taste, I trembled with a fear I rarely felt. His eyes had blackened to dark holes, his features sharpened, and his once porcelain white skin was now covered with red veins. Elongated fangs caught the limited light moments before he plunged them into the woman’s neck. She stiffened under his control, her moans slowly turning from those of pleasure into those of fear and pain.
He had no intention of letting her live. And not only had I not seen a vampire have that kind of physical reaction when feeding, but I also couldn’t let her die. Especially not at Frank’s bar. So with my stake in my right hand, I lowered my purse to the ground, counted to three and lunged at the vampire.
I’d been well trained in various martial arts, but each kill proved to be a different challenge. This vampire was new, so his reactions weren’t as well coordinated as the older on
es, and he had been completely caught off guard when I attacked. A sudden jolt of pain ripped through my shoulder when I slammed into his body and knocked him off the girl. As graceful as a ballerina, he rolled to the side and into a crouch.
“Hunter,” he snarled, the dark veins pulsing as his soulless eyes sized me up. “They warned me about your kind.” The words slid off his tongue in a way that permeated the air. Seduction at its finest, no matter the meaning.
“And what did they tell you?” I asked. Stalking to the side, I cornered him against the brick wall.
He tilted his head to the side and took a deep breath. The smile that spread across his taught face sent chills up my spine. “They said that you would be the best one.”
I didn’t have time to contemplate his words before he was on me. Caught off guard, I felt my back slam into the damp ground, the weight of the vampire much heavier than I’d imagined possible. He pushed my arms above my head and ground his hips into my own. Forcing my legs to the side, he rubbed himself against me as he licked the side of my neck. “You smell delicious,” he hissed.
For an instant, I wanted him to bite me. I’d never told any of the other hunters that I secretly craved the feeling of ecstasy released when a vampire’s fangs split the skin. Or how I longed for the idea of surrendering all of my body, even if for just a moment. They wouldn’t understand. It was a dark secret I’d kept hidden for a very long time, and this vampire had just brought it all to the surface in a rush of excitement and fear.
His fangs brushed the tip of my ear, lips sucking on the soft spot behind it. I closed my eyes and tried to will away the sudden surge of heat racing to my lower body. I knew the moment he sensed my desire and relaxed his grip on my arms. “You want this even more than she did,” he whispered, a hint of surprise on his tone.
