Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again
Page 14
It felt strange at first writing a new installment of someone else’s story. But in the end, isn’t that what we always do when we tell stories — take something old and give it something of ourselves in the hope that it will fly once more?
So I’d like to thank Lucy Fleming, Kate Grimond, and Robert Laycock for lending me their vintage car and letting me play with it (for longer than I said I would); Sarah Dudman — my incomparable editor — for finding and tuning the engine; Talya Baker for keeping track of all the thousands of screws and washers that hold the machine together. Thanks also to Solofo Eric Rakotoarisoa for the lesson in Malagasy and to George Sarkis for the lesson in Egyptian Arabic. Also to James Clay for unparalleled camper-van knowledge.
Above all, as ever, I have to thank my wife, Denise, who is forever driving us off the edges of cliffs while convincing us that we can fly.
