“No, Chloë, I don’t,” the doctor murmured, “but neither do we know it will.”
Chloë. The woman’s name was Chloë.
The doc’s attempt at reassurance fell flat, because Chloë grunted her disbelief.
He watched until she disappeared past his cubicle, taking her scent, that delicious ball-busting scent with her. Mouthing her name, he sat on the floor, and stared through the grills of the door.
“Chloë,” he whispered, not realizing how, but knowing that woman was important to him.
He sat like that for a good while, pondering what it meant, how he could know something like that and just from her smell, when he remembered the note. It took a few seconds for his eyes to adjust to the writing, it was a longhand scrawl, and Tommy’s senses were still focused on the woman he’d just seen to really take much notice.
When he finally read the three lines, he blinked, unsure if he’d read them correctly. Realizing he hadn’t made a mistake, he folded the note in half, then half again. Carefully ripping the note to shreds, he gathered the pieces, walked to the toilet and flushed the words away.
You fucking half-breed bastard and your slut of a sister are nothing in this town. Remember that when we come to get you. The police can’t help you here.
Tommy was used to being threatened. He’d been in jail, so he knew the score. But those threats had been against him, and he could handle himself. He sometimes thought he’d been born ready, ready to attack, ready to do damage and create mischief. But no one, no fucking one threatened his sister and lived.
And that was one of the only promises Tomas West could ever make and keep.
