She was beautiful, and at that moment, I knew that I could no more leave her and my family than I could lose the killer that I carried within. Somehow, no matter what, I would need to find a way to make it work, to hide that killer from my children and so that I could be there, to protect their innocence as long as Lily allowed it.

“Hello, Lily.” My voice trembled as she came up to me, though I did not know why.

“Hello, Ryan,” she replied and then she was in my arms, and the rage that had been with me for so very long was swept aside in an instant as the darkness inside of me retreated before her light.

  Just for a moment, anyway.

  Epilogue

I started up, a gasp escaping as panic filled me. I looked to my right, heart beating in my chest as I feared that it had been all a dream. But there he was, sleeping, dark hair hanging down around his face.

A miracle. That was all it could possibly be. He was returned to me, to us. My family was complete once more and, more than that, he had brought hope for us all. A vaccine, a way to end the worry of returning as a zombie once and for all.

Not to mention a way to kill the parasites. It had been he who had killed the one outside London. He who had fought his way across the raiders territory and caused a knock-on effect that had led to a small war breaking out in Wrexham.

Wherever he went chaos followed but in his wake came hope, and life. There was a chance for the world to return to normal, a chance to destroy the parasites and ensure that everyone would have a chance to live a life free of fear.

A chance for our children to have a father.

My finger touched his cheek, as I felt a tear run down my own. Hardly the first of the night and I had not been alone in shedding them. Cass was reunited with her brother, and I was certainly happy to see my old friend.

The stories they had told were only a part of what had happened I was sure, but there would be time aplenty to hear all about their journey. That was something we had together, time.

Sure, there were still enemies to deal with. The Riders, Sebastian Cho and many more raider groups besides, but that didn’t matter. He was back with me and together we could face anything.

He was home and no matter what came next, I wouldn’t lose him again.

  Note from the Author

As always, I can only thank you for taking the time to read this far into the series. It is one of my great pleasures to continue the journey of Ryan and Lily though the apocalypse and I hope you continue to enjoy them too.

With Ryan and Lily reunited, they can finally move forward and take the fight to their enemies, those false cultists under Sebastian Cho and the raiders that are a blight upon the land. In the days to come there will be surprises aplenty as Ryan tries to find a way to be both killer and parent to two preciocious children, one of whom is far too like him for comfort.

Once again, thank you for reading and see you next time.

  Richard.
