“Oh, come on!” one cousin yells. Amusement colors her voice. “You do this every time.”
“Lover privileges!” I shout back.
I lower myself into Charon’s boat, steadying myself with legs and wings both when it rocks. The souls fall from my hands, transforming into human silhouettes. One by one, they take their seats.
“What is this about privileges?” Charon asks with a raised brow.
And how can I not kiss him?
A promise of warmth and love strings between us, nothing like a siren song. Wings rustle against his back, a flat gray at odds with my speckled brown. Our wings cocoon us, feathers on all sides. We lean our foreheads together.
“I love you,” I say.
“And I love you.”
He grins right before there’s a pinch to my backside.
“Charon!” I screech, pulling back. With a mighty flap, I’m in the air. He follows while my cousins groan below.
Gray to brown, wing to wing, we fly.
And I sing, just once. This is not goodbye.
For all of us fly free beneath the endless sky.
