Roger hailed a cab and handed an address to the driver. “When we get there I want you to wait for us and take us on to our hotel if that is okay.”

  The driver nodded.

Kim asked Roger, “Where are we going?”

Roger answered, “To a hospital. I want you to meet a friend of mine.”

Kim left her book in her purse and watched the beautiful Hawaiian scenery flash by their windows. After about fifteen minutes, the driver pulled into a long drive that opened up to a rather small facility. It was only three stories and had garden type grounds.

“This doesn’t look like a hospital.”

Roger answered, “It’s not supposed to. It is for very important patients.”

Kim noticed the security personnel everywhere. Wow, must be very important patients.

They walked down a long hall after Roger had cleared them through the main security. Roger knocked on a door and opened it. It was a large, well lit room. A man was in a wheel chair and a little girl was on his lap. A beautiful woman stood at the window, turned and rushed over to hug Roger. She wiped tears as she pulled away and nodded at Kim.

“I’m sorry. Roger is my hero.” Lisa wiped tears again and put her hand out to Kim, “Lisa Core.”

Kim shook her hand and smiled. She knew who Lisa was from what Roger had told her about the case. Kim pointed, “That must be Jamie?”

Lisa was smiling. “Come meet Mathew.”

Roger and Kim visited a while and then said their goodbyes. In the cab Kim asked Roger, “Will they be safe?”

Roger nodded, “Safe and happy from the way it looks.”

Kim smiled, “Sounds like a miracle there wasn’t an oil spill. The newspaper said a lot of important people have been arrested for plotting it all.”

Roger leaned over and kissed Kim’s cheek. He had a grin from ear to ear.

Mary sipped her tall umbrella drink, wiggled her toes in the sand and said, “Well, we finally made it to Hawaii.”

Teresa, Linda, and I took big sips of our drinks and tried to count how many colors we saw in the sunset.

Teresa asked no one in particular, “What do you think happens to us now?”

Suddenly Ellen was sitting in the sand with us and smiled. “What do you think happens now?”

Mary answered, “I’m proud of how we have done on our first assignment. I think it would be a waste of perfectly good skills to stop helping mortals now that we know what we’re doing.”

  We do?

Ellen nodded. “I can tell you all feel the same as Mary. That’s good. We have another assignment waiting as soon as your vacation here is over.”

Linda asked, “What kind of assignment?”

“Midnight gals. Meet you at Transition College in the park.” Ellen was gone.

Wow, that was only six hours away. Heaven isn’t big on vacations evidently.

Kim and Roger were on beach chairs behind us, but Linda had promised Kim we wouldn’t peek.

We went back to counting the colors in the sunset. They had all changed in that short time.

A tiny surfer was riding a huge wave. We all watched mesmerized by the beauty of it and the skill that it took to stay right in that curl.

Teresa sat up straight and said, “I think that’s Ellen!”

The surfer waved at us right at that moment. Huh.

During the writing of this last book of the Trilogy, our dear friend, and co-author, Mary Hale, passed unexpectedly. She is now truly an Angel. She will always be a Shallow End Gal, and will remain in our hearts as well as our future books.
