“There ain’t much proper about them two boys, and they likely forgot you were coming in. Have the stage driver bring your things in here. You can leave them with me until you get out to their place and hog-tie one of ‘em into bringing the buckboard to fetch your belongings.”

Lizzie snatched up the letters from the counter.

“They certainly didn’t forget to write to me twice a week!”

“I’m surprised Mabel didn’t tell me they were corresponding with you. She’s the biggest gossiper in this town. I’d have certainly put a stop to those boys and their lies before things got out of control. I’m sorry they brought you all the way here for nothing.”

“They promised me a husband,” Lizzie said. “And one of them is going to have to own up to it!”

  “I wish you luck, Miss…”

“Elizabeth Ramsey, but I go by Lizzie.”

“Well, Lizzie, I certainly wish you luck with them two boys,” Etta Mae said.

Lizzie tugged on a strap that hung from her shoulder, a Remington, double-barrel shotgun swung from around her back. She held it confidently in her right hand, pointing the barrel toward the ceiling of the General Store. “This is all the luck I’m going to need!”
