Until Then

“No, I think we’re good. Lopez has all the meat on the grill. How are you feeling?” Kathy asks.

“I’m ready for one of his famous steak burgers. Well, baby boy is hungry for it.” I rub my belly before digging for some Doritos.

“What are y’all in here talking about?” London chimes in, walking through the door. “Holy shit, your belly has grown so much in the last few days.”

“As if I needed you to tell me.” I swat her ass. “Are Matt and Ricky going to make it over today?” My in-laws love them, so I knew they wouldn’t mind that I invited the couple.

“Yes, they were on the way when I spoke with him earlier. Matt pulled three doubles this week, so he may be a little cranky.”

“He’ll be fine once he gets here and sees all the desserts.” Kathy laughs. “He loves Mom’s double chocolate cherry cake. He actually called her and asked her to make one for him a few weeks ago. She loves him, so of course she did. Ricky picked it up for Matt.”

I laugh. He’s always had a sweet tooth. “Sounds just like him. I better go check on my kiddos. Kole has them all in the pool, and I’m sure they’re cooking up some pranks.”

This is what life is all about—family and friends. Today, we’re celebrating my parents’ anniversary, and I really enjoy being around everyone. I have my beautiful wife by my side, and I couldn’t be prouder of her. She’s an amazing mother, always on her feet taking care of the kids and me. If you had asked me seven years ago if I would’ve loved and even married again, I’d have said you were fucking insane. But meeting Roe changed my world. She gave me hope, and love, and a promise for the future. Our love came so fast that I know people thought we were crazy, but hell, I think I fell in love with her the moment she stepped out of her car glaring at me.

After the weeks passed, and the more time we spent together, I knew I needed her in my life regularly. She’s given me three beautiful and rambunctious children, with another on the way. I never knew there were second chances until I met her. My life is complete, and I owe it all to her.

I watch as she walks toward me, her long hair twisted into a bun on top of her head. Her sundress clings to her curves, her stomach rounder than it was with the other kids. She’s still absolutely breathtaking.

“Hey, babe, did you want a beer?” she asks, handing me a cold one. “It’s so warm today. I wanted to stick my feet in the water,” she says, sitting on the edge of the pool.

“Thank you.” I pop the top and take a pull from the beer. “You’d think that after the rain the other day it would’ve cooled off a bit, but I think it made it warmer. So glad I’m on vacation this week.”

“Rain always makes it worse.” She leans in and kisses me. “I’m so glad you’re on vacation too. We need to finish the nursery.”

“We’re going to have to get a bigger house if we keep having more babies.”

“Speaking of, what do you think about the house next door to this one?” I can tell by the look in her eyes what she’s thinking. We love our house, but we didn’t realize how small it actually was until after we had the twins.

“I saw it was up for sale. Is that what you want?” I ask, watching her smile grow as she nods in confirmation. “Well then, looks like we need to put an offer in on it. Would you want to sell ours, or lease it out?”

“Whatever you want. I do love our house, but we’ve about outgrown it. Plus, the kids will love being next to their aunt and uncle.”

“I agree. We can start working on everything this week.”

“You’re so good to me, thank you. I fall more in love with you every day. I never knew I could even love this much…until you.”

“I would do anything for you, and you know that. I love you, sweetheart.”
