116. Christiania is a self-declared self-governing area in Copenhagen, Denmark. A former military barracks, it was occupied in the 1970s by a broadly collectivist/anarchist community. It has carved out a unique legal status in Denmark.
117. The principle of “net neutrality” (short for network neutrality) requires ISPs to be prevented (by law, it is usually argued) from restricting their users’ access to networks that participate in the internet, including restricting content. See the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s page on net neutrality: https://www.eff.org/issues/net-neutrality (accessed October 24, 2012).

121. “Here’s what you can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defense each year, and instead spend it feeding, clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace”—Bill Hicks. 122. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 is a US law passed in reaction to the corporate and accounting scandals of Enron, Tyco International, Adelphia, Peregrine Systems and WorldCom. The Act aimed to eliminate the same corrupt practices that had led to these crises. Section 1107 of the Act, codified as USC 1513(e), creates a criminal offense over attempts to retaliate against whistleblowers.

124. On free software see, “The Free Software Definition,” from the website of the GNU Operating System: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html.
Free hardware means hardware that is not encumbered by proprietary patents, that is constructed to open standards, where there are no laws against reverse engineering or tampering (no anti-circumvention laws), and where the design principles, instructions and plans are made freely available so that anyone else who has them and the necessary resources can build a replica.

The Passion of Bradley Manning
THE STORY OF THE SUSPECT BEHIND THE LARGEST SECURITY BREACH IN U.S. HISTORY
Chase Madar
“Author and lawyer Chase Madar tells a great story that raises critical questions about the appropriate balance of government secrecy and national security in a modern democracy.”
—Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director, American Civil Liberties Union
“The mistreatment, trial, and fate of Private Bradley Manning will undoubtedly read like an obituary on the Obama years. His case is a crucial one. Essayist and lawyer Chase Madar turned his sharp eye on it early. His will be the single must-read book on the case.”
—Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com
