Run to Me

Shane hit the key, and the SUV sprang to life, and Erin smiled in expectation…because Mac was slowly backing away, tall and lean and handsome in his black tuxedo, even though his tie had been gone and his collar open since their I do’s.

Millie, who’d given her away, Lynn, her matron of honor, and cute little Jeremy, who’d been their ring bearer, had left shortly after their other guests. And minutes ago Christie had gone off in her flower-girl gown to spend the night with “Aunt Soapie” and Papa Amos, who would marry next weekend.

She remembered Amos’s shiny eyes when Mac asked him to be his best man. “Not Shane?” he’d asked gruffly. “No,” Mac had replied, smiling. “Shane’s a good friend. But you’re the best man I know.”

“See you Monday,” he called now as Shane drove off. Then, flashing her a smile, Mac said, “Don’t move. I’ll be right back,” and loped off to unplug the twinkle lights.

They’d chosen to postpone their honeymoon trip until later with Mac’s and Shane’s business just getting started. Besides, after all their wanderings, Erin was more than content to stay home.

  Home.

If anyone had told her in June that her life would take such an extraordinary turn by the middle of August, she wouldn’t have believed it.

But now Charles was in a jail, and the man who’d called himself John Smith was in Maine, waiting to stand trial for Trisha’s murder.

Mac came bounding up the steps to spin her around, her white gown billowing. His smile was broad and eager and his dark eyes were full of mischief. “You’re wearing too many clothes.”

“So are you,” she laughed, then shrieked when he scooped her into his arms and lifted her in a rustle of organdy and silk. Erin wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Ready to start our life together, Mrs. Corbett?” he murmured, opening the door.

Erin’s eyes stung with happy tears. “You bet, Mr. Corbett.”

“Great,” he said, grinning again. “Let’s go make a baby brother for Christie.”

Then, laughing and kissing, they crossed the threshold to their future.
