“Hell no,” Wolf muttered. “Trying not to let him see my glee.”
Mal would have laughed, but he didn’t want to tip Cage off either. Though maybe now was as good as any since Haylee probably wouldn’t miss. Though she could. It was always possible.
“Make any bets?”
“Nope,” he said. “I just wanted the satisfaction.”
Haylee sunk two more balls before Cage started to squirm. By the fifth ball, Echo was done looking nonchalant. They were all around the table now, cheering Haylee on. Cage glared.
“You fuckers set me up,” he said.
“Hell yeah we did,” Easy hooted. “Haylee is going to cream your ass!”
Cage started to laugh as Haylee sank the next two. All that was left was the eight ball. She looked up and caught Wolf’s eyes. Mal was standing right beside Wolf so he saw the weight of that look. The love contained in it caught him off guard. It wasn’t for him, but he found himself wishing it was.
That thought stunned him. What the hell?
Wolf was his buddy. His teammate. Mal was happy for him. Damned happy. But, yeah, Haylee Jamison did it for him in a big way. He didn’t know why. He didn’t understand it. In fact, he pretty much hated himself for it. It wasn’t cool to want another man’s girl.
“Damn, look at her,” Wolf said. “Magnificent.”
“Yeah, she is.” Mal didn’t want to look, but he couldn’t tear his gaze away as she bent over the table and lined up the shot. Her dark hair was a silky curtain. Her eyes glittered with happiness. The diamond on her left finger sparkled.
Haylee sank the last ball and Echo went nuts. Cage shook his head and laughed about the whole thing while some of the guys slapped him on the back. Haylee sauntered toward where Mal and Wolf stood. He could imagine, for the few seconds it took her to cross the room, that she was coming into his arms.
But she wasn’t. She walked into Wolf’s embrace. Her mouth met his and Mal felt like the lowest form of life on the planet. He turned away and headed for the bar. Time to find a willing partner for the night.
Because the woman he really wanted wouldn’t ever be his. And he was so shook by that knowledge that he was going to have to bury it under an avalanche of alcohol and bad choices.
