The 1st Boomer is launched by the ref or automatic system at the center of the field of play, equally spaced from all teams. When the Boomer reaches its apex, its color is determined, and play begins. Movement by teams before the Boomer reaches its apex is considered a false start, with the offending player or players moved onto the defender line, if possible.
Each team then battles for control of the boomer, using it to score points for their team, or against another. At least one Boomer will always remain in play at all times.
Scoring:
Scoring occurs when a boomer enters a goal, with the score of the team controlling the goal affected. Boomers that are blue in color give a team plus 1 point. Boomers that are red in color subtract 2 points. In this way, Blues should be scored in a team’s own goal, and Reds should be scored against an opponent.
Multiple Boomers:
Every game of Brigg’s Ball has at least one period of time where multiple Boomers are present on the field of play. In a general Battle, Boomers follow these rules for entering play:
At the start of play, only one Boomer is released. For the next 3 minutes, the teams will have only one Boomer on the field to battle over.
At the 3 minute mark, a second Boomer will enter play. Boomers will follow this pattern until all original Boomers have been released.
For example:
- if there are 2 teams, a minimum of 2 Boomers are needed for play. As a result, Boomers will be released at start and the 3 minute mark.
- for 3 teams, 2 Boomers are allowed, so Boomers will appear at start and 3 minutes.
- for 4 teams, 3 Boomers are allowed, so Boomers will appear at start, 3 minutes, and 6 minutes.
After the max number of Boomers is released, Boomers enter the DORMANT CYCLE.
Dormant Cycle:
When a Boomer is scored, it disappears from play, remaining dormant and unusable until certain conditions are met:
If Half of the remaining time period goes by without meeting condition 2 (see below), release a Boomer. Continue this pattern once more, for a total of 2 extra boomers released.
If all Boomers are removed from play, immediately release all Boomers up to the max number allowed for the number of teams. This rule is in effect at all times, even at the start of battles.
Goalie:
Teams are allowed the option of a GOALIE – one player who transitions to the goalie position after the game has started. The goalie has several unique advantages and disadvantages.
To become a Goalie, a player must enter the goalbox’s transition zone and wait for a period of 5 seconds. During this time, they may not interact with any Boomers or players, or the time resets. Once a player has transitioned to the goalie, they may not leave the goalbox without first transitioning back to play.
When a Goalie is active, opposing teams may not enter the goalbox without penalty. If another team’s player enters the goalbox, they will receive a foul. If that player collides with the goalie – Willfully or Not – the team of that player will lose 1 point. Goalies may actively attack any player that enters the goalbox.
Goalies may hold onto any boomer for up to 10 seconds, but may not score boomers of any type. Goalies that hold onto Boomers for more than 10 seconds or attempt to score with a Boomer will acquire a foul, and no points will be gained or lost.
Fouls:
Each team is allowed 5 fouls without major penalty. Any foul acquired by a player is shared with the team. A team that acquires 5 fouls immediately loses one active player from their team, reducing the total number of players they can field at any time. This cycle will repeat until no more players can be lost and the team forfeits the Battle.
Brigg’s Ball is a full contact sport, and a great deal of leeway is often given to teams as they engage in Battles. Any Player possessing a Boomer is considered fair game for engagement. Players that attack opponents not possessing a Boomer run the risk of acquiring fouls, generally at the discretion of the referee, and position related to the Boomer.
Although full contact is encouraged, certain behaviors are frowned upon and more likely to result in fouls. These include excessively violent attacks or attacks designed to inflict more grievous injury than simple bruising.
The most important rule to remember, however, is that “it isn’t a foul if you don’t get caught.”
Victory:
The team with the highest score at the end of the 20 minute period wins the Battle.
