The Institute: A Dark Anthology Page 32

by Dani René

They carried her through an open door where two more orderlies were waiting with a straightjacket. They forced her into it despite her very best efforts and finally they managed to secure her in it. They pushed her to the ground in the far corner of the room and left, shutting her in the darkness of the solitary cell. Molly sobbed to be let out, begged and pleaded, but they didn’t come back.

Eventually she stopped crying and tried to think what she could have possibly done to warrant being sent to solitary, but she couldn’t think of a single thing. Lizzie had said that she shouldn’t have slept with him. With whom? Had Lizzie found out about James and her?

No, she didn’t think that Lizzie would have, and if she had, surely she would have been happy for Molly. That she had found someone to spend her life with. She didn’t think that Lizzie would have her punished for it.

Maybe it wasn’t Lizzie, maybe James’ bosses had found out. Oh God, Molly’s heart filled with dread, wondering if James would lose his job because of this and if he would be punished. She knew that doctors weren’t allowed to consort with patients, but if they would just let her state their case, they would see that this wasn’t anything other than true love.

She wanted to call for help, but she was scared that maybe if it wasn’t about James, that by drawing attention to what they did, she would get him into trouble as well. She didn’t know what to do. She struggled to get up and find her way to the door, which she could only find because of the thin strip of light seeping through underneath it. Standing behind the door Molly called for help, called for James, begged to speak to Lizzie. She didn’t know how long she stood there and shouted and screamed, but no one came, not even to tell her to keep quiet. She eventually sunk to the floor and rested her head against the door, letting tears silently fall down her face. She didn’t even know how long she was going to be in here for.

She must have fallen asleep because quite suddenly the door opened and she opened her eyes, squinting against the bright light. A nurse came in to feed her and despite her numerous questions, she didn’t say a word. When Molly didn’t eat after five minutes, she simply left with the food. The second time, the same thing happened. The third time Molly was starving so simply ate what she was given without complaint. As the nurse left, she begged her to call her doctor, that she wasn’t feeling well. If the nurse heard her, she didn’t give any sign.

When the same nurse came to feed her at the next meal time, she knew that the message hadn’t been passed on and simply ate her food. She wasn’t getting out of here until whatever time had passed or whoever decided on her fate decided she had had enough.

  Chapter 5

When the door opened, Molly didn’t even bother to lift her head to look at the nurse that normally came to feed her. She felt lost, as though she had been in this room for a lifetime. She had tried to ask when she would be let out, but no one had answered her. Well, the nurse had not answered her. She only ever saw the nurse who fed her and who freed her from the jacket long enough for her to use the toilet before restraining her again.

That would be a lie, twice she had tried to get out the jacket and twice orderlies had come in to wrestle her viciously to the ground and restrain her in it again. Now, she didn’t bother to fight. She didn’t want to fight it anymore. She hadn’t seen or heard from James or Lizzie in all the time she had been down here, and she wasn’t sure how long that had been.

“Get up, Molly,” the male orderly said, and Molly was surprised. She hadn’t heard a voice in so long that it was almost deafening to her. As though the orderly had shouted to her, even though logically, she knew he had only spoken to her. After a moment’s hesitation she got up and slowly walked towards him.

  “Turn around,” he instructed her.

She did so and flinched as he started to undo her restraints. Ah, that made sense, it was time to use the bathroom; even though it didn’t feel like time, she would force herself to go because she didn’t want to have an accident later. Once he had undone the restraints, he gently turned her around. “You can take it off now.”

She looked up at him and shook her head.

“No, you really can, you’re going back upstairs today.”

Molly felt the tears falling down her face as she felt a load of tension fall from her shoulders. She weakly got out of the jacket and let it drop to the floor. The orderly took her arm and led her out of the room. Once in the light she realized that it was Christian, the new orderly, who had come to get her.

“Thank you,” she said with a croaky voice.

“It’s no problem, I wish I had known sooner. I only found out this morning what had happened; I’d been off.”

“You got me out? Without permission?” she asked.

Christian smiled. “No, with Dr. Manning’s permission. He was the one who said I could bring you up. There was a mix-up with some paperwork; you shouldn’t have been down here in the first place, Molly. Let’s get you upstairs, showered, and rested, yeah?”

  “Yeah,” Molly said softly.

As they walked slowly upstairs the cogs in Molly’s mind started to turn once again. A simple paperwork mix-up had led her to be put in solitary for… “How long was I down there for?” she asked softly.

“A week, can you believe it!” Christian said. “Absolutely disgusting, Dr. Manning has assured me he will take this up with the head of Serenity.”

A week? Molly thought. Her sister had mixed up paperwork and sent her to solitary for a week. Her OCD, perfectionist sister had mixed up paperwork at all… Molly could feel anger building deep inside of her and rising to the fore, but she was too weak to properly express it now. She let Christian lead her to the showers and waited outside while he got a nurse to help wash her.

Once she was clean Christian took her to her room, which had been stripped of all her personal belongings and apparently was for her own safety. Christian helped her onto her bed, and she smiled at him. “I’m so lucky.”

“You are?” Christian asked, smiling down at her. “How so?”

“Well, first, I have an amazing sister who loves me so much she brought me here. I have an amazing doctor treating me, and now l have a knight in shining armor who saved me.”

“I’m hardly a knight,” Christian said, blushing deeply. “I just knew something was wrong and sorted it out. It’s my job.”

“It’s more than your job; I wish there was some way for me to thank you.”

“Your resting and getting better is thanks enough,” Christian said, stroking her hair out of her face. “You just take care of yourself, little miss.”

“Okay, Christian, I also need to think of a way to thank Lizzie for everything she has done for me. I’m finally getting better and I couldn’t have done it without her. Maybe… No, that wouldn’t be right.” Molly gave a big sigh and looked away.

“What is it?” he asked curiously.

“Well, I thought of making her a card and leaving it in her locker, in a way only I know how, but, you know, I’m not allowed there. I’m a patient.”

“Yeah, only nurses and orderlies are allowed there, but I can take it for you,” Christian offered.

“No, it wouldn’t work. It’s a twin thing, you see.”

“Oh,” Christian said. “Sorry…” He started towards the door and paused. “I’ll get you some paper and pens and leave them on your table. Make the card and…well…I’ll see what I can do, okay? But don’t go telling anyone or I’ll get in trouble.”

“Thank you, Christian, that would mean the world to me!”

Christian shut her door and Molly turned on her side, closing her eyes and relaxing in the comfort of her bed.

Molly had the card and was waiting for Christian after breakfast the next day. They had discussed it briefly in the morning after Molly had taken her morning medication. Most of the patients would be divided between the recreation rooms, the treatment rooms, and the gardens so Christian would help her sneak into the nurses’ locker room and keep a look out whil
e she placed the card as it needed to be in Lizzie’s locker. She would then be able to find it when she returned, and no one would be any the wiser.

Christian opened the door to her room with a small smile, a flower in his hand. “You ready?”

Molly stood up quickly. “Yes,” she said, crossing the room to the door.

“Let’s go,” he said, closing the door once she had walked through. The corridors were not busy at all as they walked a path Molly hadn’t gone previously. The hallways here looked older than the other hallways, as though the rest of the building was built onto this section. They rounded another corridor and Christian said quietly, “There shouldn’t be anyone here at this time because shift change was over an hour ago and no one else is allowed this side, but we need to be quick just in case.” Molly nodded and followed him quickly and quietly. They seemed to walk forever before Christian stopped outside of a door marked ‘Female Nurses’ and smiled. “This is it,” he said, “You go on quickly and I’ll stand watch.”

Molly smiled and kissed his cheek quickly. “Thank you, Christian,” she said and walked inside the locker room, pausing at the door to look around and make sure there wasn’t anyone inside. She then walked in and shut the door behind her. Luckily, the locker doors had the nurses’ surnames taped on the front and Molly could quickly scan for Lizzie’s which she did. She found her sister’s locker quickly and opened it, surprised that there were no locks. Clearly, they never thought that patients could ever reach this area, clearly patients had never reached this area until now.

Molly opened Lizzie’s locker and went through her things quickly, finding the perfect spot for the card and then reconsidering her decision. She didn’t have long; she knew Christian would come to check what was taking so long any minute now. She was surprised he had let her go in by herself. It was now or never.

As quickly as she could Molly undressed and dressed into a pair of Lizzie’s scrubs, pulling her clothes on over them. As she was about to close the locker, she noticed a pair of scissors in the back and quickly grabbed them, putting them in the waistband of her pants. She quickly walked back to the front door, trying to act as though everything was normal. She stuck her head out and saw Christian waiting there.

“It’s clear,” he said quickly, “but let’s get out of here before anyone comes along.”

He didn’t seem to notice anything different about Molly, so she followed him back down the hallways they had walked through and back towards her room where he left her. She smiled brightly; it had worked perfectly. She pulled the card out from the waistband of her pants, tossed it away, and got the scissors out. Molly pulled her clothes off and left Lizzie’s on before going to her mirror and letting her hair loose. She cut at it, cutting it shorter than what it had been. Her long black locks fell to the ground and she was left with a short little bob fringing her face.

Molly looked at herself in the mirror and smiled brightly; it was such an insane idea that it might actually work. She walked out of the room and towards the nurses’ station without a care in the world.

“Hey, Lizzie,” one of the nurses greeted her, “I thought you weren’t coming in because you were sick?”

“I’m feeling much better and wanted to take care of everyone,” Molly said with a smile and other nurses smiled back.

Molly saw the tray with the medication and the schedule on the side and retrieved it, pushing it along towards the patients’ rooms. She had managed to fool the nurses, now she just had to fool everyone else. She doubted that James would be fooled, he loved her and knew who she was, but it would be a fun game to play in the meantime.

Carefully consulting the schedule, Molly went from room to room pretending to be Lizzie and handing out medication and checking in on her patients carefully.

No one paid her any mind, and everyone greeted her and welcomed her back to work, commenting on how she was missed while she had been away. Molly quite enjoyed the attention that she was getting as Lizzie and could understand why Lizzie found this such a rewarding job. It was nice to be liked like this and nice to be appreciated for the help given. It also wasn’t a difficult job because everything was labelled accordingly, and you just had to follow the chart that was printed and put on the trolley. Molly wouldn’t be able to keep this up all day though because she didn’t know what Lizzie did after she gave all her patients medication; she thought she would pop past James’ office to see how he was doing, maybe give him a little something to remember her by, before going back to her room and changing back into her clothes.

Once she had stored the medicine cart back where it belonged, she walked towards James’ office. It was strange to not have to be escorted anywhere with an orderly. She was greeted politely as she walked past, and no one asked where she was going or what she was doing. When she reached his office door she knocked softly and when he told her to come in, she pushed open the door and entered with a big smile.

“Hello, handsome,” she said, shutting the door behind her.

“Lizzie, I thought you were off sick.”

Molly paused slightly and then decided to toy with him a little bit. “I was feeling better and couldn’t stand to be away from my patients.”

“Away from your patients or away from me?” he asked, leaning back in his chair with a wicked smile.

Molly’s stomach clenched and she tried to maintain her smile. Something was off, he thought she was Lizzie and was flirting with her. This wasn’t right.

“Have you checked on Molly?” she asked him, going to lean against his table.

“Not yet, but she’s stable for now since you weren’t here to administer the drugs last night. I think we should increase the dosage and record what effect it has on her.”

“What have you discovered so far?” she asked, trying not to clench her jaw.

“Well, she reacts to the psychedelics as one should, but it seems that she is completely convinced that the sexual trauma you experienced as a child, that she witnessed, is her own. She is completely deluded in that fact.”

“Is that why you fucked her?” Molly asked, standing straight and crossing her arms.

“Baby, baby, baby,” James said, standing up and placing his hands on her arms, “You know I did what I had to do to keep the experiment going. When it’s over we’ll dispose of your pesky little sister and it’ll be just us, together.” He leaned down and kissed her deeply.

Molly let him kiss her, but the rage was building up inside of her. As they broke the kiss she looked away. “Fat load of good this experiment will do if we don’t record the data.”

“I’ve been recording it,” James said, reaching into a drawer next to his desk and pulling out a thick file. “Everything we have done is in here and once you convince Molly to sign off on it, it will be deemed completely legal and binding.”

Molly looked at the file then at James and gave him a bright smile. “You and me, together forever,” she said.

“Forever, baby, I promise.” He set the file on his table and started to undo his pants. “Now, why don’t you put those little lips to some good use and suck my cock before you get that cute little ass back to work.”

Molly smiled brightly and said, “How about I ride that big cock before I go back to what I was doing?”

James licked his lips and nodded. “Yeah, I like that idea, bring that cute little pussy over here.”

Molly smiled and shimmied out of her panties before crossing over to straddle his lap. The minute he was inside her she started to ride him hard, purposefully moving so that the chair swung around, and she was facing with her back to the window, his back to his desk. She leaned forward and smothered his face with her breasts so she could feel along his desk. Her fingers wrapped around a metal letter opener and she clasped it tightly.

“Oh Jesus, Lizzie, I love being inside of you…” James mumbled against her breasts.

Molly pulled back so she could look down at him as she said, “My fucking name is Molly.”

&nb
sp; Before he could do anything, she had stabbed him in the throat, pulled out the letter opener, and stabbed him again. He clutched at the gaping hole in his throat as blood poured from the wound. Molly got up and watched him struggle, before leaning over and stabbing him in the chest, where she estimated his heart to be. She repeatedly stabbed him, just to be sure, in case she had missed. Molly then stood back with a small smile and watched as James bled out, sitting at his desk, his cock still hanging out. She considered cutting it off but decided it wasn’t worth the amount of effort it would take on her part.

Instead, her attention turned to the file that James had pulled out and the drawer he had pulled it out of; the drawer was still half open. She quickly opened it and pulled out all the other files that were in there and started to investigate them thoroughly.

  Lizzie

Having been laid up in bed for so long was hard for Lizzie. She didn’t want to get the patients sick, but she was worried about Molly, what she was getting up to while she was away. She had to put a lot of trust into James and that he was managing the situation there while she was off sick.

Lizzie was just wondering what she was going to make for lunch when her pager went off. She reached for it and saw it was a nine-one-one page from James, and that could only relate to Molly. She got dressed as quick as she could and hopped into her car, not caring what she looked like. She didn’t want anyone to know she was going into work sick, so she parked around back and sneaked in.

She didn’t see anyone along the way and quickly walked into James’ office saying, “This better be important because I feel like shit.”

James was sitting in his chair facing away from her. She walked towards him. “What is it? Are you done fucking my sister again?” When James didn’t turn around to acknowledge her, she got annoyed and walked closer to him. “Look, I know you’re pissed I threw her in solitary confinement, but you never said you were going to fuck her for this experiment. How was I supposed to feel?”
