  Once there he stopped, holding the canoe in place as they both looked downstream. The Brazos flowed away from them and toward a world very different than their own.

  “Maggie, do you have any idea at all of what you’re looking for out there?”

  “Nope.”

  “Figures. Good luck with that.”

  “Yeah.”

  Billy released the boat and watched it glide away in the moonlit night. He never took his eyes off of it, ignoring the chill of the water. The craft dwindled rapidly despite the slow current, and within a few minutes it disappeared around a bend in the river.

  She never looked back, but he hadn’t expected her to.

  It wasn’t their way.
