Elemental Fear

  I nodded.

“Where’s your young man?” She said looking round the room as if he was hiding in a corner somewhere. “He hasn’t left your side since you came in here.”

  “He’s at a funeral.” I said quietly.

“Oh, I am sorry. Was he close to the deceased?”

I shook my head not really wanting to get into this discussion. I still woke up in cold sweats after what had happened. I was in a coma for three weeks and so far spent a further three weeks in the hospital. Thankfully the swine flu pandemic had gotten under control so I was finally allowed visitors other than mum and dad.

“Well I’m sure he will be here as soon as it finishes.” I nodded. I couldn’t wait.

She carried out her general observations, and left me to my silent room. I had a private room, which I liked but times when I had no visitors I wished I had someone around to talk to. Dominic had bought me a kindle, and iPod to keep me entertained. He had made the cutest playlist of the songs he said reminded him of me.

I put my earphones in my ears and closed my eyes. I could wait a little longer for him to get here without going crazy.

It was getting dark outside when the door to my room opened and in came a familiar face, not the man I wanted to see, but much better than the usual nurses.

“Johan.” I smiled and lifted my arms to gesture I wanted a hug.

He held out a single yellow rose with a small card attached to it. He leaned over kissed me on the forehead and left the room.

“Johan?” I called out as he closed the door.

I looked down at the flower then back at the door. I looked at the card.

  Yellow Rose with Red Tip:

  Friendship & falling in love

You were my friend first, but without a doubt you claimed my heart

I smiled but was a little skeptical over Johan’s intentions; I always believed he thought we were just friends.

The door opened again and Louise came walking in, I placed my rose from Johan on the hospital cupboard and smiled at her.

She held out a single yellow rose too. Leaned over and kissed me on the forehead and left the room.

I stared at the closed door feeling like I was part of a strange candid camera television programme. I looked down at the rose and read the little card.

  Yellow Rose:

  Promise of a new beginning

This is a symbol of where we began and our new life together

I smiled hoping more than anything these were from Dominic. I turned and grabbed the rose Johan had brought realising that indeed it had red tips and wasn’t just a plain yellow rose.

The door opened again and in came dad with Ellie in his arms. She passed me a white rose. He held her forward so she could kiss me.

“I’m not allowed to say anything, I’ve got to be quiet.” She whisper shouted and put her finger to her lips. I laughed and dad shook his head.

“Well if she can talk so can I. Love you baby girl,” he said before kissing my head and leaving the room with Ellie chastising him for talking.

  White Rose:

  Purity, Innocence, silence and secrecy.

This symbolises we no longer have secrets, we no longer stay silent

My love for you is pure.

I covered my mouth and smiled. Tears welled in my eyes. The door opened and I looked up to find the man of my dreams standing there holding a single red rose. He came over to the bed, kissed me on the mouth; I loved the feel of his lips on mine. He handed me a deep red rose, but instead of leaving he remained at the side of the bed.

  Red Rose:

  Love, Beauty, Courage and Respect.

You are the most beautiful person I know, inside and out.

I admire your strength and courage. You are my princess, let me be your prince.

  I love you.

A tear rolled down my cheek at such a sweet and romantic gesture. I looked up at the man I adored and whole heartedly loved, to see him standing with his arm held out holding a small open box.

“Marry me Eve, complete me. Be my wife, my love, my everything, forever.”

Stunned my mouth gaped open as I sat staring at my grandmother’s engagement ring, nestled inside a beautiful black velvet box.

“You’re making me sweat a little here babe, is your silence a good thing?”

I looked up into his gorgeous blue eyes. His usual confident smile faltered as I continued to stare at him.

“Eve?” He whispered, I watched as he swallowed.

“Dominic, of course it’s a yes. I love you. Yes!” I laughed and covered my mouth.

He bounced on the balls of his feet and leant forward, but before his lips touched mine he stood up straight and opened the door to my room.

“She said yes.” He called down the corridor. I heard a cacophony of laughs and “Get in” Before he turned and came back to claim his kiss.

His lips hit mine with delicious force.

“I love you, God I love you so bloody much,” he said against my lips.

“I love you too.” I said, lifting my arms to curl around the nape of his neck.

  “I was right.”

  He frowned “right about what?”

“When I was five, I said that when I’m a big girl I will marry you...Do-nic” I said in a child like voice. He laughed pulling me into his arms.

“That you did babe. That you did”

  THE END!
