“You're right.” She lowered her head and puffed out a breath.
“Let's go in and grab a cup of tea,” Gordon suggested.
Joan pointed at the body of Walter Grey. “What about him?”
“I don't think he'll want one,” Gordon sniggered and even Junior managed a small smile.
“Not funny, Gordon.” Joan shook her head.
Junior walked away from the pair of them and both watched the boy as he trudged his way back to the caravan; both felt sorry for the teenager.
“Get stripped off outside the caravan,” Joan called out to the teenager. “I don't want any blood inside.”
Junior stripped off to his pants, leaving the rest of his clothes in a pile, by the door. He then went inside, leaving the door wide open, as Joan and Gordon slowly walked back over to the caravan.
“Now what?” Gordon asked.
“Who knows?” Joan sighed.
“At least the place is quiet now.” Gordon took a quick three-sixty look around as they continued to progress, albeit very slowly, towards the caravan.
“I wonder how long the supplies will last us?”
“A week. Maybe two.”
Joan was first to the door and stopped on one of the steps that led inside. “Then what?”
“I have no idea.” Gordon stared at Joan and could see that there was no hope in her face at all. Had she given up?
“I think we should ration the food as much as we can,” she suggested, “and then go out for more when we literally have nothing left. I reckon the later we leave it to go out there, the less of them they’ll be. They’re human after all. Maybe some will have starved if we wait a few weeks.”
Joan stepped inside and Gordon was about to, but paused and turned around as he stood on the final step. He looked around the site and released a long moan.
“We'll never be safe.”
He went inside and shut the door behind him.
