In 1976, ninety-two-year-old Alice paid her last visit to the White House to dine with the visiting Queen Elizabeth II, carrying the purse that the Queen’s great-grandfather Edward VII had given her exactly seventy years earlier. “Someone once calculated that I’d been to an average of 2.7 dinners a year at the White House over a sixty-year period,” Alice once said. “That’s an awful lot of dinner.” (Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library)
