“Yeah,” she says again, but I’m not so sure she will.
“Please, I need her to know.”
“I will.”
“Thank you,” I say rubbing my forehead when a knot builds between my eyes.
“Okay, bye,” Jane says, the kindness in her voice unmistakable. She cares about Brita, and will always be at her side. But I know I’m in the circle of friends too. All I can do is hope at this point.
Axel nudges me in the arm. “Keep trying, man,” he says. “It’ll work out.”
I nod, faking a swift smile. “Yeah. Hey, would you let Mom know I went home. I suddenly don’t feel like partying.”
Axel considers me for a long moment. “You know what, no. We’re going to Smiley’s.”
“No, you don’t—”
“Nope,” Axel holds up his hand. “On the rare occasion I’m down, I can count on you.”
“What about Shay?”
“She’ll be fine. Remember, I’m a sweetie.” Axel takes a few steps back. “Just give me a second; I’m going to call her.”
I sit back at the table to make his phone call before we gorge on hamburgers and fries.
She believed Logan over me, and the more I think about it, the more annoyed I am.
But more than that, Brita Jacobson slipped her Shakespeare loving self into my life, and there is no way I’m letting her go without a fight.
