  Before the man could move, the creature pounced on him. It sunk its teeth into the man’s neck, causing him to scream out in pain. His neck felt like it was on fire as the beast remained locked on his bite. It felt like fire was flowing through his veins. Finally, the creature pulled away, taking a chunk of the man’s neck with him. The man tried crawling back toward the truck, but his body was too heavy. He could not pull the weight. Getting to the truck was the only thing on his mind but he would not be able to make it to the vehicle. The fire inside of his veins took over. It felt like he was going to burn alive. The cool breeze that was blowing through the broken windows did nothing to bring his temperature down.

  The man felt his chest began to tighten, and his head began to pound. The pain was agonizing. A violent cough escaped the man’s mouth, along with another one. He held his hand up to his mouth. He coughed again. A mixture of blood and saliva had escaped during the coughs. The man’s eyes drifted onto the blood that he coughed up. His stomach turned. The blood was not red; it was black.

  He crawled toward the counter, climbing over the debris that blocked his path. His body still felt like an inferno. Inch by inch, he continued crawling as pain shot through his entire body. The cluttered path in front of him began to blur, and everything around him began spinning. Even through all of the suffering, he continued crawling until the top of his head bumped the counter. With his last bit of strength, he reached to pull himself up. The nails of his claw dug into the counter.
