Acknowledgements
This book would not have been possible if many years ago David Lloyd at Channel 4 had not commissioned a treatment of a film on the death of Princess Diana. In the end, I made the film for Chris Shaw, then at Five TV. Both encouraged me. I must also record my thanks to Francois Gillery, with whom I collaborated on a film for French TV. As ever, David Carr Brown, who filmed and edited my film was an excellent foil as we pondered the edit (before making that film, I had never ventured into royal territory).
A number of libraries were very helpful – the Wellcome Trust in London, the British Library (though it did not have a copy of the Kensington System), the University of Southampton, which houses the Mountbatten papers, the Bishopsgate Institute and the Royal Society of Medicine. Robert Greenwood, one of the librarians there, gave me a wonderful story but, alas, told me I could not use it. I have honoured his request. Ben Shephard, whose books on psychiatry in World War I have been widely praised, was extremely helpful in providing some ideas.
My agent and friend Sonia Land was very supportive, as was her assistant, Samuel Humphrey.
Jeremy Robson liked the idea from the first and provided stability and useful criticism. Hollie Teague sensibly urged some cuts in the first chapter. At the end of the process Emily Carter read the book with great care and I am most grateful for her hard work. The mistakes remain mine, of course.
