Ruthless: An Irish Mafia Romance (Wild Irish Book 2)
Page 19
“A job for Da.” I can’t say what it is, and he knows if I don’t say that I can’t.
“Shit is going down up here. You’re missing all the action.”
“I’m sure you can handle it,” I say as my eyes clash with my dad’s. “I’ve got to go. I’ll catch you later.” I move through the crowd, and when I reach Da, he leads me to a room out back. Only about ten men are seated. Most of them high up in the Ra. Da takes me to a chair in the corner.
“Nothing like a pint at home.” Dad raises his pint and drinks it until his glass is empty. “He got a good send off,” he says, but I can see the pain in Da’s eyes. Pain he won’t shed. Maybe he will later on at home alone but not here around these men. It would be a sign of weakness, and no matter the loss, you have to only show strength.
“Have you made any progress on your Ma?”
“I will. I have Shane helping me find out who the informant is?”
“Shane.” Da says his name with disgust. If he knew the truth, Shane wouldn’t just get a bullet in the head. He would be tortured.
“Yeah, he fucked some people over, and I found out about it. So I’m using it as leverage.” He nods, but he holds my eye a little longer, and I try to make sure I breathe normal as I pick up my drink. I hate lying to him, but I continue to remind myself that it’s for the greater good.
Da leaves earlier, and the funeral party takes a turn around mid-night. The younger members grow wild, and that’s when I leave. Walking down market street reminds me how much I miss this place, and when Matt falls into step beside me, I pause and stare up at the stars.
“It’s getting wild in there,” Matt says as he lights up a fag.
I’m staring at the stars. I’m wondering if you are too? Once I have it sent, I realize it’s three in the morning.
“Shit,” I mumble, hoping I don’t wake her up.
“What’s up?”
“I sent a message to my girlfriend, and I just realized it’s three in the morning.” Both of Matt’s eyebrows rise.
“Girlfriend. I’ll keep that one on the QT. I can already hear all the hearts break.” I grin at Matt’s over exaggeration.
I was asleep, but I’m out back now. Staring up at the stars. X I’m grinning again.
“Is it dirty?” Matt asks leaning in. “Staring at the stars? What are you talking about?”
I push him away. Get inside before you get cold, and I love you.
My phone bleeps again, and Ava sends me a photo of herself fresh faced and smiling into the camera. She’s standing in the kitchen and under the image she’s written: I love you too.
“She’s hot.” I put the phone away and turn to Matt who holds up his hands. “What?”
She is hot, but I don’t want anyone else calling her that.
“Right, I’m off to bed. Will we catch up tomorrow?” Matt sways slightly, and I help him stand straighter.
“Nah, I’m going to head back at first light. But once I’m done down there, I’m sure I’ll be home for good.” Matt slaps me on the back and walks off. His steps aren’t the best, and I watch him until he disappears around the corner.
When I get home, the dark house isn’t inviting, and I think about Ava. Maybe I could leave and surprise her, creep into her window. No she has work in the morning. But going into the house was causing my chest to tighten. The garage is noisy as fuck as I push it open. Pulling the tarp off my motorcycle, I push her out of the garage and carry the helmet. I’ll ring Da tomorrow. I don’t want to linger around here for too long. It just makes it harder to leave.
Once I have pushed the bike down the road, I jump on and start it up making the journey back to Co. Meath.
CHAPTER TWENTY SIX
CONNOR
“Why are we here again?” I ask Ava while I balance on the thin walkway that’s been laid 6km through a bog and woodlands.
“Please, Connor. Walk properly or you’re going to end up in the bog.” I do a little wobble and laugh at Ava. Opening up my arms, she walks into them, and I give her a hug. It’s beautiful out here. We caught a good day, and being outdoors with Ava is nice.
After leaving Belfast two nights ago, it was six in the morning when I entered Kells, so I did the proper thing and went to Headfort Demesne. I still had notions about crawling in Ava’s window. But I left her alone. Taking her hand, I face forward.
“Thank you.” Her smile is wide as we walk through the bog and woodlands. It’s funny we don’t meet anyone here. It’s like the world has decided to leave us alone.
“So I wanted to ask you.” I stop walking and face Ava again. “We have a family wedding coming up in the summer, and I would love if you came with me.” Her eyes light up, and she’s in my arms. “All you had to say was a wedding, and I’m there. Who’s getting married?”
“Finn, one of the youngest. We’ll meet them before the wedding.”
“I really can’t wait to meet your family.”
“Yeah. I’m dreading it,” I admit, and Ava’s laughter carries across the land.
“Don’t. It will be fine. I’m sure they will love me.”
“They’ll love you. But I’m not sure how you will feel about them.” The idea of her being in a room with Liam, Michael and Shane just doesn’t sit well with me, but I wouldn’t miss Finn’s wedding for the world.
“I’ll have to get a dress.” Ava gives a small happy clap, and I think maybe it will all be worth it. We spend the rest of the day in the bog and then eating out before going home where we spend far more time than we intended. Spending our free time together and our nights in each other’s arms makes the times I have to go home and interact with Shane easier. I know I have Ava to come back to.

The vibration of my phone on the bedside table wakes me up. “Who is it?” Ava sits up beside me as I turn on a light. Darragh flashes up on the screen.
“Hello.” I kick back the covers and climb out of bed. “Connor, I need you now, man.” I’m awake and moving into the living room.
“What’s wrong?”
“I fucked up!” His slurred voice is caused from more than drink.
“Where are you?”
“Pool house. Yeah, I think the pool house.”
I’m back in the bedroom pulling on clothes when Ava sits up again. “What pool house, Darragh?”
“Our house.”
Holding the phone away, I give a quick kiss. “Go to sleep, it’s just Darragh. He needs a lift. I’ll be back soon.” She gives me a sleepy smile before lying back down.
“Okay, be careful.” I’m out the door.
“Are you still there?”
“Yeah, Connor hurry up.” I try to keep Darragh on the phone, but I lose him. I’m in the jeep trying to ring him back when I get a dead tone. Great.
The roads are empty at four in the morning as I speed through Kells. I keep hitting re-dial, but I still get no answer.
Why has he rang me and not the others?
I arrive at the house, and no lights are on. I turn off my own lights as I make my way around back. The pool house is lit up, and dread snakes it’s way around my stomach.
Pushing open the door the water reflects the lights back to me, but I can’t see anyone.
“Darragh,” I call out and can hear movement that seems to be coming from behind the couch. My heart picks up at each step I take closer until I’m looking down at Darragh.
There’s so much blood covering him, and the blond girl who’s dead at his feet. “I really fucked up this time, man.”

CLAIMING AMBER
Emmett Harrington is a far cry from a knight in shining armor. He’s more like the prince of the criminal underworld. His armor a 9mm pistol.
On the day I get arr
ested, I ring my best friend to bail me out. Instead, she sends her brother, Emmett Harrington, a guy I had never met before.
So, a few things about me. I like to party. Nothing wrong with that. I have no filter. That can get me into trouble at times, but I prefer honesty any day. I think that’s what Emmett likes about me, why he won’t let me go. Before I realize it, I‘m kept hostage at one of his mansions, and I have been locked up in one of his hotels.
Turns out, he‘s pissed off a lot of people. He’s cold and unsociable, but underneath the glinting, dangerous surface, there’s something I’m drawn to. I’m intrigued.
Intrigued enough to throw caution to the wind and follow him down a very dangerous path. One I hope I come back from.
If you like Mafia Style Romances, then Claiming Amber will feed your addiction for a romance with lots of drama.

About The Author
Enjoy this book? You can make a big difference
Reviews are the most powerful tools in my arsenal when it comes to getting attention for my books. Much as I’d like to, I don’t have the financial muscle of a New York publisher.
(Not yet, anyway).
But I do have something much more powerful and effective than that, and it’s something that those publishers would kill to get their hands on.
A committed and loyal bunch of readers.
Honest reviews of my book help bring them to the attention of other readers.
So if you’ve enjoyed this book I would be very grateful if you could spend just five minutes leaving a review.
Thank you very much!
