Again her question went unanswered. She was beginning to feel a little ignored and disrespected but the soft touch he laid on her backside alleviated all of her worries as he grabbed his keys and they stepped out the door. In the car, Brittany was starting to notice a pattern with Dune. He always opened her car door, he always held her hand while he drove and he never let her exit the car until he was ready. She began to wonder if this was a sign of control or was he just proving to her that he was a strong man. Either way she was basking in what she allowed herself to believe was his pampering. Brittany looked around in their direction of travel realizing that the route was looking very familiar.

“So, baby…um…don’t you have to go to work or something?” Brittany asked trying to inconspicuously lead up to her previously unanswered question.

“No. I took off work just for you. I want to be by your side in your time of need.”

“Awe. Dune that’s so sweet but you didn’t have to do that. Nothing will bring Charity back and I just have to accept that. The funeral is Saturday by the way, at 11am. Momma wanted to know if you would be a pallbearer. She isn’t inviting any of our family since they never gave a shit about us anyway. It’s gonna be a nice small ceremony.” Brittany felt her mouth running off. That bad habit ran in her family. She waited patiently to see if he would respond but he just continued to drive in silence. “Well, it would mean a lot to her, is all.”

  “I would be honored.”

“Dune. Why are you so guarded when I ask you questions? Am I talking too much?”

Dune looked over at Brittany from the corner of his eye then returned his vision to the road displaying a sly smirk. Brittany stuck to his face like glue trying to figure him out but was stumped. Amused, he figured he would put her out of her misery a little even though it was nice watching her try to read him.

“Brit, you’re fine. Nothing’s wrong with you. I’m not guarded don’t trip. Naw I would be honored to be a pallbearer. Tell moms it’s all good.”

“Okay well you just scare me when you’re silent.”

Dune squinted his eyes as he pulled into the parking lot of the building. Brittany looked up in total shock pondering what the hell they were doing there. Her phone rang out singing Beyonce’s Put A Ring On It as Dune pulled into a parking space and shut the car off. She looked down at the number worriedly hoping that Dune wouldn’t question her about it. It was Derek’s lawyer friend returning her phone call. She dismissed it pushing the end button then tossing the phone in her back pocket as if nothing was wrong exiting the car seemingly natural. Dune grabbed her hand intertwining their fingers like school children as they frolicked inside the building. Brittany still had no clue as to why they were there but she put her trust in him hoping he knew what he was doing. They walked into a courtroom with the session already in progress. They sat down in the back quietly listening to the proceedings as Dune tickled her side engaging in a smile and soft kiss with her full lips.

“Your honor, my client does not have any prior convictions nor does he have a passport. He is not a flight risk and is an upstanding citizen and highly respected lawyer.”

Brittany couldn’t see that well, as there were many people in the seats ahead of them. She looked around the heads eagerly attempting to see who was standing before the judge. Dune didn’t budge an inch as he anticipated the judge’s answer to the lawyer and state’s attorney’s debate.

“I see no reason why this man can not be released on bail. Bail is set at $50,000. Court appearance scheduled for next month July 10th at 9am.”

The judge’s gavel banged as people rose to shake hands, converse and exit the courtroom. Brittany’s hands were sweaty like she had just stepped out the shower. She knew they were at Derek’s bail hearing. It was frustrating that Dune hadn’t told her they were coming but she refused to look like she had an issue with it. She maintained her classy poise as she allowed Dune’s hand on the small of her back to escort her into the hallway away from the chaos. The lawyer exited the courtroom with Derek by his side. Dune shook the man’s hand then stepped over to Derek.

“Great job man. Great job.” Dune said.

“This young man will be released at 12 noon. All we gotta do is pay the system. You know how that goes.” The lawyer said stepping away to take a call on his cell.

“Com’ here bro! Thanks man. You really came through for a nigga man!” Derek hugged Dune patting him manly on his back. He looked up at Brittany, who was fiddling with her fingers in front of her, for a brief second with hate in his eyes.

“Told you I had you baby.” Dune cleared his throat then stepped back behind Brittany placing his hand back on the small of her back. “You remember, Brit.”

“Shit, how could I forget?” Derek’s blood boiled over times ten. He wanted to lunge at this nigga for flossing her in front of his face like that but he remained calm remembering where he was. If it weren’t for the case he was fighting and this nigga just helping him get out he would’ve blazed that nigga right there.

“Hello, Derek.” Her voice was stern and she held her head high with her hand on her hip, sassy-like. She was still on the fence as to whether or not Derek had killed her cousin but she couldn’t rule out her love for a man she was about to marry at one point.

Derek wanted to reach out his hand initiating a shake, any excuse to touch her soft silky skin once more, but resisted. He returned his view back to Dune who was hawking him down like he was about to attack. The men smiled at each other.

“I see you brah.” Derek said nodding his head.

  “Yep.” Dune replied.

The lawyer tapped Derek on his shoulder waving his fingers so they could go and get his bail underway. Derek walked off without an adieu. Brittany stood there watching him as her heart began to cave in slowly drowning in it’s own blood. She wanted to touch him, hold him, hug him or run off to some far off fantasyland where they could live happily ever after. Reality was struck back inside of her as Dune escorted her back to the car and drove off.

In the back of her mind, Brittany began to wonder how bad it really was that Charity was gone. After all it was Charity who was the deciding factor in her engagement to Derek. If she was still alive she would never leave him alone and it was clear that he was falling in love with her. But with her gone she was free to have him all to herself again. The only problem was that she had already committed a love to Dune who was already treating her as if they were married for twenty years or something.

“Babe, maybe I should spend some time at my apartment for a little while. I just need some time to think.” Brittany said closing the front door then plopping down on the sofa.

“Now why would you want to do something like that? You know Derek will be out of jail soon and where else does he have to go, kitty kat? I can’t say that I feel comfortable with you there alone with him.” Dune said turning on the sports channel attempting to drown out the conversation.

“I suppose you’re right. Well I guess I could just go get some more things ya know? No since in forcing myself to where the same clothes over and over again.”

“Yep. You should get a lot of things, like damn near everything. That way you won’t have to go back that much. I was also thinking that you could even sell your place.” Dune sucked his teeth making an annoying screeching sound.

“Sell…sell my place? I’ve had it for like ever. You want me to sell it?”

“Yeah. You’ve got everything you need here babe. Everything. Why do you need to be on your own?”

“Dune, it has nothing to do with being on my own. I mean, don’t you think we are moving a little too fast here. We’ve only been together for a little under a week and already we’re acting married.”

“Isn’t that what you wanted? It’s okay when it’s some raggedy ass nigga who fucks anything that walks but when a decent man tries to show you what a woman should be treated like you shit all over it.” The inflection in Dune’s voice was incredibly unpleasant. He tried to remain ci
vil but it seemed he was becoming irate.

“Dune I appreciate everything you have done these past few days. You’re great, really. I…I just think we might be moving too fast.” Brittany looked down at the floor afraid to look into his face. She felt the tension between them and decided it was time to make her exit. She stood grabbing her clutch off of the coffee table and stuffed her keys and cell inside.

“Where are you going? You can’t stay there, Brit. Look I’m sorry I didn’t mean that shit just come and sit down. It’s not safe for you there.” Desperation was now prevalent in his voice.

“I’m just going out for a little while. I’ll be back.” Brittany said walking out the door.

  “Promise.” He said silently.

Brittany shut the door behind her. She had heard his silent question but took a lesson from him and refused to answer him.

Brittany sat on her sofa in silence watching the day turn into night. She had taken a nice steamy shower and slipped on her comfortable red silk pajama short set. Her cell phone blew up every hour on the hour with calls from Dune needing to hear her voice. He needed to know that she was still all in for him and only him but she never answered the phone. Each time he called he simply hung up without a voicemail so she figured his calls were unimportant. Brittany needed some time away from him to clear her head and figure out if being with him was the right thing to do or was he just the transitional man.

Even though she was enjoying her much needed silence, she anxiously awaited Derek’s return to her apartment. He had been released hours ago and should have been home by now but it was going on 10:30pm and he was still missing in action. Brittany stood looking out the living room window hoping to see him walking down the street. Disappointment began to set in as she plopped down hard on the sofa finally answering Dune's millionth call.

  "Hello." She answered in aggravation.

"Thanks for deciding to answer this time." Dune was surprisingly calm. It was like nothing ever changed between them.

"Sorry, Dune. I just needed time..."

Just as she was attempting to finish her sentence Derek came bursting in the front door blazing drunk and wreaking of a foul pussy odor. Brittany was as confused as a blind lesbian in a fish market. The smell hit her like a ton of bricks from ten feet away. As he stumbled in he realized she was on the phone, placing his finger over his mouth and winking his eye at her.

“I’m listening.” Dune said interrupting her daze.

“I just needed some time to think, Dune.”

“Do you still think we are moving to fast?”

Dune’s voice got really low as if he were whispering into the phone to her. His deep manly voice vibrated through her ear sending shock waves to her kitty cat. It was then that she remembered why she was so sprung over him; he was just too damn sexy.

Before she could answer Derek had made his way to her knees. He wildly whisked her legs apart forcing her shorts to the side nearly ripping them off. His grasp was so strong she could barely move as she struggled to get out of his hold. It was no use. Brittany slowed her breathing so Dune wouldn’t suspect anything-weird going on in the background.

“Um, not really. I think we should take it a little slow though.” Brittany tried to remain very still despite Derek’s sloppy attempts at her well-wet snatch. But as soon as she felt his tongue hit her clitoris she simply melted. She sank down into the plush sofa feeling as velvety as the popular cheese.

“Well that’s good baby ‘cause I expect you back here tomorrow, alright?”

There was dead silence. Dune listened in and heard nothing but he already knew what was going on. He wasn’t happy about it but he would never let her know that.

  “BABE!” He yelled

“Yeah…” Brittany replied seemingly out of breath, holding back cum.

  “Call me in the morning.”

“I got you.” She said as she hung up the phone.

Brittany checked her phone to make sure the call was completely ended then let out a loud sensual moan catching her breath. Derek went to work on her pussy make sure to sop up every drop of her juices with his tongue. He licked all around even dipping his tongue inside fucking her as if it were his own piece. She was torn between the good feeling and her morals but it felt so damn good. She grabbed the back of his head pushing him deeper into her pleasure. He fought wiggling his head from side to side trying to free his nose from capture. Derek broke free from her clench and rose staring her blankly in the face.

“I didn’t cum yet!” Brittany snapped.

Derek quickly went back to work. He sucked her middle holding it in his mouth, overworking his tongue making her legs shake like an earthquake. Her climax exploded above any that Brittany could think of. Derek sat there with his head on her thigh just close enough to her slit that he could still bask in the glory of her centered goodness. He tickled her tiny hairs with his fingertips running them across gently.

“Oh my fucking Gosh!” Brittany pushed his face away with her feet raising up to fix her clothes.

“What is wrong with you damn it? Didn’t I just make you bust like 54 times?” Derek was obviously still drunk and incoherent. He wasn’t even disturbed by the foot kicks that were just delivered aggressively to his face.

“You came in here piss faced drunk and stinking of pussy. Who the fuck did you fuck before you came here?”

“Nobody, man. You trippin’”. Derek wasn’t in the mood to argue with her ass. He waved her off then stumbled to get up off the floor and slumped down on the sofa next her. He grabbed her legs rubbing them roughly like she was a playful dog.

“What’s that smell then, huh? If it’s not pussy what’s that smell?”

“GIRL, I don’t know. Shut the fuck up. Your man is home! Now you can quit fucking my best friend.”

Brittany leaned back with the shit look on her face, “What did you just say?”

“Awe, bitch you heard what I said. You’re fucking him. And don’t think I don’t know it.”

“Okay, so what if I fucked him. Yeah, I fucked him! It was good too. He read my body like braille bitch and this pussy was like nothing he ever tasted”. Brittany rolled her eyes like a smart aleck elementary school girl. She rubbed her body from her tits to her pussy gyrating in Derek’s face that his best friend had a piece of what was supposed to be his.

Derek was too drunk to be confrontational but hearing that fucked his head up big time. He wanted to cry for all of the dirty things he did wrong to her. He wanted to hold her in his arms and tell her he wished he could take it all back and start over. Instead he just lowered his head, "Brit, I know I haven't been the perfect man but I know I need you. You're the only one who I can trust right now to really be by my side”.

Brittany felt sorry for the bumbling fool. She rubbed his head gently, "I will always love you, Derek. I'll do the best I can, but no promises. I mean, I do have to attend my cousin's funeral on Saturday”.

"Do you believe I killed her?”

Brittany paused staring up at the ceiling letting out a deep sigh, "No."

Derek's relief glowed on his face.

"But who could've done this with you there? You didn't hear anything or see anything?" Brittany asked.

"No, baby I was out like a light."

"We need to figure out who your enemies are. Shit, you're a lawyer so it could literally be anybody."

Derek rubbed her thigh strongly massaging seductively. He gently leaned in kissing her neck biting just the way she liked it. Brittany's resistance seemed futile since his drunkenness brought about this strength in him she had never experienced before.

"Derek, why didn't you come straight home when you got out?" Brittany asked.

"I met up with Dune and we went out to celebrate my release. What happened after that, I couldn’t even tell you”.

Brittany jumped back locked onto his eyes. She didn’t want to explain to him that she was on the phone with Dune when he came in; she figured it was
best left unsaid. She allowed Derek to take her right there in the living room, horrid smell and all. She didn’t even think of Dune once as they engaged in their sinful acts of lust and betrayal. Unbeknownst to them, Dune was still on the other side of the front door listening to everything that went on. Once he pushed Derek in the door he waited for him to close the door then stood there waiting for Brittany’s reaction. Dune knew Brittany only went home to jolt into his friend’s arms one last time and allowed her to go hang herself. As Dune walked off back to his car he took his cell out scrolling through the numbers angrily.

“Yeah, do it Friday night, man. I’ll meet you out there. One”

  ****

Two days went by without any sign or call from Dune. Brittany wondered had he known about Derek being back in her life. She called him a couple of times but there was no answer. She had some very expensive clothes in her rollaway bag that she wanted to get back but had no access to his apartment. Derek, on the other hand, had been the perfect gentleman. He was the man she wanted him to be in the beginning, laying up under him all day and hadn’t left the house since he came home. Even with Charity’s funeral coming up the next day, Brittany basked in her ex-fiancé’s devoted bliss.
