THE LAST WARRING ANGEL
EXT./INT. PRESIDENTIAL LIMOUSINE - DAY
SUPERIMPOSE: NOVEMBER 22, 1963
President Kennedy is smiling and waving to the CHEERING PEOPLE that line the streets.
The AUDIO slowly FADES OUT.
President Kennedy lurches forward, struck by a bullet from behind. His head explodes from the second bullet, throwing his body backwards.
SECRET SERVICE AGENTS scramble.
EXT. GRASSY KNOLL
Behind the fence on the knoll is a man dressed as a Police Officer named MICHAEL WALKER. He is a thirty year old white man, with short dark hair, six foot, two hundred pounds.
He quickly dismantles a rifle and places the pieces into a duffle bag, then walks to a car parked in an alley with its engine running.
SCREAMS can be heard as the AUDIO slowly FADES IN.
INT. PARKED CAR
Walker gets in, as the driver, ARTHUR STONE, shifts the car into gear and pulls out of the parking lot.
STONE
Did we do it?
WALKER
Yeah, looks like it, Stone. The target was hit twice...I took the head shot.
STONE
You and your damn head shots. I've never seen you miss. Must be a gift.
WALKER
Well, if it is a gift, it sure as hell ain't from God. Not after what we did here today...
Walker is quiet as they drive down the street. He is looking out the window at the buildings they pass by.
WALKER
(pause)
...I'll be honest with you...This was the toughest damn assignment I ever been on. And I ain't talking about the actual operation, I'm talking about who we had to take out.
STONE
(nods yes)
...Yeah. Well, Walker, we can't undo what we just did, so we're gonna have to live with it. No matter how hard that may be.
They drive down the street in silence.
EXT. PENTAGON - NIGHT
The building is lit up and buzzing with activity.
INT. PENTAGON CONFERENCE ROOM
Eight MEN, including Walker and Stone, are sitting quietly at a large conference table.
The door opens and in walks VICTOR WAYLAND, Director of Operations for the assassination. He is middle aged, medium height and build, with a very powerful and menacing aura that seems to darken the room.
Everyone immediately stands up out of respect.
WAYLAND
Please have a seat...
Everyone, including Wayland, sits down.
WAYLAND
I've just received confirmation that our mission was a success. I'd like to congratulate you all on a job well done...
Wayland opens his briefcase, then begins passing out files.
WAYLAND
As I'm sure you can understand I'm pressed for time, so let’s get right to it. Here are your next assignments...
Each man finds the file with his name on it.
WAYLAND
Each assignment is for overseas and should last for six months to a year; long enough for things to settle down back here.
WALKER
(looking at his paperwork)
Vietnam? For a year? Mister Wayland, sir, I can't speak for the others, but I was hoping for a little time off after this op.
WAYLAND
Time off denied, Walker. We've got a green light now for the war to proceed full throttle. I need my best men over there.
Wayland stands and shuts his briefcase.
WAYLAND
(pause)
...I know a few of you questioned this operation. I understand killing our President wasn't an easy thing to do...I'm not authorized to tell you what the reasoning was for this op, but I want you all to know that the retiring of President Kennedy was done for the best interest of our country and that someday you will understand why this had to be done...
Wayland starts to walk for the door.
WAYLAND
Well, gentlemen, as I said, I'm very pressed for time. Good luck in your next assignments. I'll be in contact with you shortly...
Wayland exits the room.
Stone looks at Walker, who is staring off into space.
STONE
...Hey, man, you okay?
WALKER
Just thinking about what we did today.
STONE
You cool with it?
WALKER
(pause)
...I guess I have to be. C'mon, we got a plane to catch.
They get up and walk out the door.
EXT. JUNGLE IN VIETNAM - NIGHT
SUPERIMPOSE: EIGHT MONTHS LATER
There is a small camp set up at the base of a mountain range.
INT. TENT
Walker is asleep on his cot, obviously having a bad dream. His MOANS awaken Stone, on the cot beside him. He reaches out and nudges Walker's shoulder.
STONE
Hey, buddy, wake up...
Walker reacts by violently shoving Stone's hand away and falling backwards off of his cot.
STONE
(shocked)
Walker, it's me man, Stone...
Still not fully awake and stumbling around, Walker CRASHES into a table, sending their weapons tumbling to the ground.
STONE
Christ, man, you're gonna wake the whole damn camp with all the noise you're making!
Stone gets up and grabs the lantern on the table beside his bed and ignites it with a match. He adjusts the flame to the lowest setting and walks cautiously over to Walker.
STONE
Easy, man, easy...It's okay, you're just having a bad dream...Time to wake up. You hear me, Walker?
Walker is staring at the light from the lantern. He starts to settle down as Stone approaches.
STONE
You awake yet?
WALKER
(pause)
...Yeah.
Walker reaches out and grabs the lantern, pulling it closer as if it will save him from the demons that haunt him. He turns up the flame on the lantern as high as it will go.
STONE
...Same dream?
Walker nods yes.
STONE
(concerned)
This is gettin' to be a regular thing...You need to get some kind of help, man.
WALKER
(angry)
Who am I supposed to get help from? You see any shrinks runnin' around out here in the bush?
STONE
Relax, man, I'm trying to help...It's just not like you to have nightmares like this. I've known you for a long time and I swear to God, sometimes I've thought that you had ice water in your veins, but that last hit...it did something to you. You haven't been the same since...
WALKER
(pause)
...I don't know what's wrong with me. I never felt the guilt before...Never had nightmares after I did a job...Never had them until I killed Kennedy.
STONE
(nervous)
You shouldn't...
WALKER
What, tell the truth?...It was my head shot that killed Kennedy.
STONE
So what? You've killed before and you'll kill again....It's not the end of the world.
WALKER
(pause)
...But in my dreams it is. The world ends because of what I did...We all go to Hell... Because of me...
STONE
Three things. First...you were following orders to kill Kennedy...
Stone walks over to his foot locker. He opens the locker and begins rummaging through it.
STONE
Second, all this "End of the World" crap is really starting to make me worry about you. You're not gonna go psycho on me are you?
Walker SIGHS and shakes his head no.
STONE
Third, I don't know if it'll help, but it probably won't hurt...
He pulls out a small pocket sized Bible from the locker and tosses it to Walker, who shoots him a look of disbelief when he realizes what it is.
STONE
Hey, I don't read it. I just have it around, you know?...Maybe it'll stop the dreams.
WALKER
...I've never really believed in God...
STONE
Well, in your dreams you seem to believe in Hell, so maybe you believe in God more than you realize...Just don't turn into no Bible preachin' asshole, okay?
WALKER
(shakes head)
...Who'd have ever thought I'd be looking to a Bible for help.
Stone LAUGHS and crawls into bed.
STONE
Maybe it is the end of the world.
Walker opens the Bible to the first page and begins reading.
EXT. CAMP - MORNING
The sun rises and cuts through the thick jungle cover.
Stone is shaving outside at a water barrel when he suddenly stops and looks off toward the mountains to the east.
The SOUND of a helicopter can be heard approaching.
STONE
Lieutenant!
LIEUTENANT TRAHN, a South Vietnamese Soldier and translator, runs over to Stone.
LT. TRAHN
(broken English)
Yes, sir!
STONE
Anyone scheduled for today?
LT. TRAHN
No, sir. No one until end of week.
Stone listens as the THUMPING sounds of the helicopter grow louder.
STONE
It sounds like one of ours, but get everyone up just in case.
LT. TRAHN
Yes, sir!
Lieutenant Trahn runs off as Stone picks up his M-16 rifle.
INT. TENT
Walker is asleep on his cot with the Bible lying next to him when Lieutenant Trahn runs in.
LT. TRAHN
Sir, wake up!
Walker bolts upright to a seated position.
LT. TRAHN
Helicopter coming, not scheduled!
WALKER
(groggy)
Where's Stone?
LT. TRAHN
He outside already.
WALKER
Crap...
He jumps off his cot, knocking the Bible to the floor, and quickly starts to get dressed.
EXT. CAMP
A helicopter suddenly appears over the trees.
Stone recognizes it and SHOUTS to the platoon of South Vietnamese Soldiers.
STONE
(in Vietnamese)
Hold your fire! Hold your fire!
The Soldiers lower their weapons as the helicopter lands.
Stone is surprised when Wayland steps off the helicopter along with eight SPECIAL FORCES SOLDIERS.
STONE
Sir, what are you doing here?
WAYLAND
Where's Walker?
STONE
He's in the hootch...
Wayland motions to the tent and two Special Forces Soldiers break off from the group.
STONE
What's goin' on sir, is everything all right?
WAYLAND
Relax...I'm just here to go over yours and Walker's alibi. I don't know if you've heard, but there's been a commission appointed to look into the Kennedy Affair.
STONE
(nervous)
Have they found out anything?
WAYLAND
No...And I'm here to make sure it stays that way...Can you have the men assembled, please?
STONE
(hesitant)
Sir, we shouldn't be out in the open...I mean, just a few days ago we got into a firefight with a gook patrol not too far from here...
WAYLAND
(sternly)
I said, assemble the men. Piss on the gooks, Stone.
STONE
...Yes, sir.
Stone motions to Lieutenant Trahn to come over.
STONE
I need you to call a formation.
LT. TRAHN
(looks around nervously)
But, sir...
STONE
I know...Quickly, Lieutenant.
LT. TRAHN
Yes, sir.
Lieutenant Trahn turns and shouts orders in Vietnamese to all within earshot. The NVA Soldiers quickly form up into a group and stand at the position of attention.
Stone turns to Wayland. Awkward silence.
STONE
...What about the others from our team, have you contacted them about this commission thing?
WAYLAND
They've already been taken care of.
Walker emerges from the tent with his M-16 at his side.
Stone SEES Walker and waves him over.
STONE
I gotta tell you, sir, I sure hope you reassign us soon. I don't know how much more of this jungle Walker and I can take...
Stone doesn't see the handgun that Wayland places to the back of his head.
WAYLAND
I'm afraid you two won't ever be leaving here...
Walker sees the gun in Wayland’s hand.
WALKER
(yells)
Stone!
Wayland pulls the trigger. BANG. Stone falls to the ground.
The Special Forces Soldiers OPEN FIRE on Lieutenant Trahn and the other Vietnamese Soldiers, killing them all.
Walker's shocked expression turns to rage as he FIRES his weapon at Wayland. Wayland is STRUCK in the chest by several bullets.
Suddenly, Walker's chest EXPLODES outward as bullets RIP through him. He falls to his knees. Standing behind him are two Special Forces Soldiers.
Wayland, clutching his chest, walks toward Walker.
SOLDIER #1
(concerned)
Sir, are you all right?!
Wayland stops before Walker, who struggles to his feet.
WAYLAND
(to Soldier)
Shut up and secure the camp.
(to Walker)
You have an impressive spirit...It's my pleasure to kill it.
Wayland cocks the trigger on his handgun and then FIRES several rounds into Walker's chest. Walker falls to his back, struggles with life for a few moments, then closes his eyes and dies.
Wayland stands over him and stares at his l
ifeless body.
WAYLAND
(to Soldiers)
...Destroy all the bodies...burn them.
SOLDIER #1
Sir, you've been shot...You really...
WAYLAND
(angrily)
Don't worry about it, just do what I say!
SOLDIER #1
(taken aback)
...Yes, sir.
Some Soldiers quickly begin pulling all the bodies into one pile, while the others dump gasoline on the tents.
Wayland glances into Walker's tent and notices the Bible lying on the ground.
INT. TENT
Wayland walks in, picks up the Bible, and CHUCKLES to himself as he thumbs through it. He places the Bible down on the cot.
Wayland pulls his hand away from his chest and unbuttons his shirt and looks down at the bullet holes. After several moments, the wounds stop bleeding and they begin to close. Within a few moments they have closed completely, leaving no signs of the wounds. He smiles and buttons up his shirt, then picks up the Bible.
WAYLAND
(to the Bible)
Enjoy the time you have left. Your rule is coming to an end.
He reaches into his pocket, pulls out a lighter and lights the Bible, then throws it against the tent. The dry, gas soaked fabric is quickly engulfed in flames.
As he walks out of the tent, he places his hand over the healed wounds to conceal his miraculous recovery from the Soldiers.
EXT. CAMP
Several Soldiers are about to dump gasoline on the bodies when two of them are STRUCK by sniper fire. Everyone but Wayland hits the dirt.
SOLDIER #1
Snipers! Everyone fall back to the chopper!
The Soldiers grab their wounded and head for the helicopter.
WAYLAND
Wait, we have to destroy the bodies!
SOLDIER #1
We don't have time, we don't know how many gooks are out there!
Wayland tries to light the pile of bodies with his lighter.
SOLDIER #1
We didn't have time to throw any gas on 'em!
A bullet SMASHES through the windshield of the helicopter causing the PILOT to signal that he's taking off.
SOLDIER #1
Sir, they're gonna leave without us! We gotta go!
Wayland hesitates for several moments before reluctantly heading for the helicopter.
Several bullets STRIKE the helicopter as Wayland and Soldier #1 jump on board.
Wayland looks down at the dead bodies as the helicopter quickly climbs above the tree line and flies away.
EXT. CAMP
After a few moments, several VC SOLDIERS emerge from the jungle and descend upon the camp.
The fires from the tents are getting close to the bodies when suddenly, a HUGE TORRENTIAL WIND tears through the camp and blows the fire away from the dead bodies.
The spooked VC Soldiers retreat into the jungle.
After several moments, the fire diminishes and the wind stops. All that can be heard is the SOUND of leaves falling to the ground.
DISSOLVE TO:
EXT. CAMP - NIGHT
Dead silence.
Suddenly the camp begins to get BRIGHTER. The LIGHT builds until finally the camp is bathed in the BRIGHTEST WHITE LIGHT imaginable.
We SEE Walker, lying atop the pile of dead bodies, his face pale from the light. His eyes suddenly open. He is alive again.
FADE TO BLACK.
EXT. TERMINAL ISLAND PRISON - NIGHT
SUPERIMPOSE: LOS ANGELES, DECEMBER 29, 2020
Several helicopters circle overhead, their lights shining on the prison walls.
Hundreds of people and vehicles block the entrance to the prison. Pure pandemonium.
INT. TERMINAL ISLAND PRISON
The inside is just as bad as the outside. Law Enforcement, Secret Service Agents, FBI, News Crews, people everywhere.
Several News Crews are broadcasting live via satellite.
NEWS ANCHOR
...This is Mitch Blakely coming to you live from Terminal Island Prison, just outside of Los Angeles. To recap; President Roberts was the target in an assassination attempt today, just a few hours ago at his home in Pacific Palisades where he was vacationing. The alleged assassin was brought to this facility while President Roberts was airlifted to the UCLA Medical Center. No official word yet on the President's condition, but my sources say he is fine, just a little shaken up, as one can imagine. Trish, back to you...
INT. MEDICAL WING/ROOM ELEVEN
Walker is handcuffed to a hospital bed, hooked up to IV's. The only change in his appearance is his hair, which is now very long. He is barely conscious.
A heavily-armed POLICE OFFICER stands guard by the door.
INT. MEDICAL WING/HALLWAY
FBI Agent JAMES HARPER, a tall black male, late forties and FBI Agent SUSAN RICHARDSON, a medium height white woman, early thirties, are in the hall with DR. TOLLIVER. Richardson is talking on her phone.
HARPER
(to Richardson)
...Any word on the psychologist, ‘cause we definitely need one for this guy.
Richardson ends her conversation on her phone.
RICHARDSON
The Agency is flying one in, but it'll be a while. Air traffic is a nightmare over the prison.
HARPER
(to Dr. Tolliver)
So, tell me Doc, what's your opinion?
DR. TOLLIVER
(shakes his head in disbelief)
Well, to be honest I've never seen anything like this before. It took ten men to strap him down when he regained consciousness. Right now we're pumping enough sedatives into him to knock an elephant on it's rear...I've heard of cases where a person has a hyperactive adrenaline gland, giving them abnormal strength, but this is beyond that. This is utterly amazing to me.
HARPER
You think that the sedatives are making him hallucinate and come up with the story that he told us?
DR. TOLLIVER
Hallucinate?! Agent Harper, with the amount of drugs we’re pumping into him he should be dead twenty times over.
RICHARDSON
So, what you're saying, Doctor, is that at this point we can't rule out anything?
DR. TOLLIVER
I'm at a loss for words. I don't know how it's humanly possible for him to be alive with that much sedatives coursing through his veins.
Harper quizzically looks at them both, then nervously laughs.
HARPER
You two aren't actually buying into his story, are you?
RICHARDSON
No, but how do you explain the fact that he has no injuries? You saw the President's house. It looked like Tehran after we bombed it.
DR. TOLLIVER
His clothing did have multiple bullet holes, but no sign of fresh entry wounds...He also has, what appear to be, several older bullet hole scars on his upper torso in his chest and back area. I honestly don't know how he could have survived those wounds, whenever it was that he received them.
HARPER
(disbelief)
What the hell's wrong with you two? He says he's some kinda Warring Angel out to save the world, for crying out loud! In my book, he's just some psycho with a high tolerance for drugs who got lucky and didn't get badly hurt when he tried to waste the President...Now, let's go back in and go over his story with him again and I'll bet this time he calls himself the Queen of England.
Harper opens the door to room eleven.
INT. ROOM ELEVEN
The Police Officer greets Harper and Richardson as they enter. Dr. Tolliver remains outside the room.
HARPER
How's he doing?
POLICE OFFICER
Just been starin' at the wall...Any word on the President?
HARPER
He's fine, just a few scratches. Shaken up, mostly.
POLICE OFFICER
That's good.
HARPER

; Can you give us a few, Officer?
POLICE OFFICER
Sure...
The Police Officer exits the room and shuts the door.
Harper and Richardson both pull up chairs and sit down next to the bed.
HARPER
(long pause)
...So, how you feeling Walter?
WALKER
(groggy)
...Walker...My name is Michael Walker...
HARPER
Walker...right, I forgot. And you said you served in the Marine Corp from nineteen fifty three to fifty five, but we didn't find any military or CIA records on you.
WALKER
I served from fifty two to fifty six and it was in the Army. I told you that after the assassination of JFK all my CIA records were destroyed.
Richardson looks at her notes, then to Harper and nods yes.
RICHARDSON
His story hasn't changed. What were the names of your parents, Mister Walker?
WALKER
...James and Martha Walker.
Richardson checks her notes and again nods her head yes. She looks at Harper.
RICHARDSON
James and Martha.
HARPER
...That's very good...You're impressing the hell out of me, I'll give you that...Susan looked it up, there was a James and Martha Walker who had a son named Michael. And Michael did serve in the Army, but the military record showed that Michael Walker was killed in a training accident. And I hate to burst your bubble, but it was well before President Kennedy was assassinated...
WALKER
...They made up the story about the training accident.
HARPER
And why was that?
WALKER
...I was recruited by the CIA because of my ability.
HARPER
And what ability is that?
WALKER
...I'm a good shot. I followed orders.
Richardson searches through his military records and finds his weapon scores.
RICHARDSON
Stationary target, expert, perfect score. Moving target, expert, perfect score. Overall record was spotless.
Harper isn’t buying it. He SIGHS and shakes his head back and forth.
HARPER
And just like that you gave up your whole life; everything for the CIA? Even let your family and friends think you died in a training accident with the Army? Come on!
WALKER
Times were different back then...You believed in your government...I would have done anything they asked me to...And I did...
HARPER
Why no record of you in the CIA, FBI, hell even the Boy Scouts for that matter?
WALKER
...I told you, my records in the CIA were destroyed after the Kennedy assassination.
HARPER
(laughs)
Assassination...Right. You sure got a thing for presidents, huh? Almost killed another one tonight, didn't you?
WALKER
...I didn't try to kill the President.
HARPER
Oh, really?!
RICHARDSON
You killed thirty Secret Service Agents protecting the President; how can you say you weren't trying to kill him?
HARPER
Yeah, hotshot, explain that one.
WALKER
...My target was the President's Senior Advisor.
HARPER
His Senior Advisor?! Victor Hilliard?!
WALKER
Hilliard to you...But I knew him as Victor Wayland.
HARPER
(acts excited)
Oh, I see...That's the same guy that you said was your Operations Director on the Kennedy assassination! The same guy that you said killed you in Vietnam!...Now I see how it all connects! And I would assume then that this Wayland-Hilliard cat is an angel also...
WALKER
...I didn't know it back then...But yes, he is an angel...A Fallen Angel.
HARPER
Oh, a Fallen Angel...He works for the other side then? The Devil, right? Of course you wouldn't be trying to kill a "good" angel, would you; what was I thinking?...Tell me something though, won't God be a little pissed off when he finds out that you killed all those Secret Service Agents. Or were they all Fallen Angels too?
WALKER
...No, they weren't Fallen Angels. They were just pawns caught in the War. I regret having to take their lives, but we're close to losing everything and I had no choice.
Harper leans back in his chair.
HARPER
...Okay, I'll bite. How are we "close to losing everything"?
WALKER
...The war between North Korea and South Korea will be taken to a new level...Because they're losing, North Korea will drop a low yield nuclear weapon on South Korea tonight...Two days from now, we will launch a retaliatory nuclear strike on North Korea... North Korea and their ally China, will then launch all of their nuclear weapons against us, causing the United States to do the same. It will be a world ending event.
HARPER
Wow! So, not only are you an angel, you're an angel that can predict the future?! If I show you my palm, can you give me a reading on it too?
WALKER
When I sleep I see images...Images of what might happen...Images of what will happen if I fail.
HARPER
Boom, end of the world, right?...So, then you do need to kill the President...
WALKER
No...The President means nothing to me. It's Hilliard...He's manipulating him...Influencing him...He has that effect on people...Hilliard's strength is his power of manipulation.
HARPER
Kind of like a secret power, right? Can he fly and does he have heat-ray vision too?
WALKER
...We're stronger...faster...and can take more punishment to our bodies than you. We can also heal faster...But, we're not immortal. We can be killed.
HARPER
(shakes head)
I don't know about you, Susan...
(looks at Richardson)
...But I think this would make a pretty cool movie...
(looks at Walker)
You're not a deranged out of work screenwriter are you?
Walker looks away in disgust. His eyes meet Richardson's.
RICHARDSON
(long pause)
...What exactly is a Warring Angel?
WALKER
We're the ones that fight the battle between Heaven and Hell.
RICHARDSON
Are there more Warring Angels like you out there?
WALKER
...There were thousands at one time...Fighting the War...But, over the millennia we've been killed faster than we can be replenished. I'm the last one left.
RICHARDSON
Can't God create more?
WALKER
It's not that easy...A Warring Angel takes an enormous amount of energy to create. God gets that energy from the good and faith in the world. The more this world sinks into despair and corruption, the less strength God has.
Harper isn't buying a word and his body language shows it as he smiles and slumps in his chair.
HARPER
Got a question for you; I've always wondered which religion is the right one. So, which is it, mister angel?
WALKER
None. All. Those that pray are praying to the same God, regardless of what religion you belong to.
HARPER
Well, that's gonna piss off a whole lot of hardcore religious fanatics...
WALKER
Look, I don't care...I just need you to believe what I'm saying or I'm going to die tonight. And if I die, it's game over. The world is at a crossroad and Hilliard knows that I'm desperate enough to tell you everything. If one person believes me it jeopardizes his plans. He'll send a team of Fallen Angels here tonight. They'll kill everyone here to get to me. With me dead the future will be set.
HARPER
So, what you want then is for us to just let you go? Just walk on out the door?
(sarcastic)
Yeah, right, we'll do that.
(he stands)
I give up. I'm gonna go wait outside for the shrink...You coming, Susan?
RICHARDSON
...I'll stay and watch him.
Harper motions for her to follow him. She gets up and follows him to the other side of the room.
HARPER
(whispers)
You okay?
RICHARDSON
(whispers)
I'm fine...
HARPER
(whispers)
...I'm gonna ask you again; you're not buying into this are you?
RICHARDSON
(whispers)
...I...I don't know, Jim.
HARPER
(whispers)
...Look, I realize that you're having a hard time dealing with losing your father a few months ago, but don't let your emotional state suck you into believing this loon's story about all this angel-war-crap.
RICHARDSON
(whispers)
It's not just my father...Are the things he said so unbelievable?
Harper looks at her like she is crazy.
HARPER
(whispers)
Have you lost your damn mind?! Of course they sound unbelievable! Come on, Susan, why are you even asking me this?
RICHARDSON
(whispers)
...Do you believe in God?
HARPER
(whispers)
My father was a Baptist Minister, I had no choice...
RICHARDSON
(whispers)
But, in your heart, Jim, do you believe?
HARPER
(whispers)
Yeah, I do.
RICHARDSON
(whispers)
Then, if you believe in the existence of God, something that has never been factually proven, why wouldn't what Walker says be possible? As crazy as his story sounds there is a chance it could be true if you believe in God.
HARPER
(whispers)
Susan, please...
RICHARDSON
(whispers)
Jim, you've known me for three years; I'm as level headed as they come...
HARPER
(whispers; cuts her off)
I know. That's why I think that losing your father has left you in a confused state of mind. Come on Susan...end of the world?...Besides, I don't know what kind of angels you were taught about, but the angels I was taught about never ran around with fully automatic weapons...Now, I'm going outside to wait for the shrink in the lobby and after he's done talking to the "Last Warring Angel" over there, I recommend you set up an appointment with him for yourself as soon as possible...
Harper exits the room. Richardson turns and finds Walker STARING at her.
WALKER
...You believe me.
RICHARDSON
No, no I don't...
WALKER
That part deep inside you does. The part of you that places that cross around your neck each day. That part of you believes me.
She instinctively reaches for her cross hidden under her shirt collar.
RICHARDSON
...So, you guessed that I wear a cross...That doesn't make you what you claim to be. And it won't make me let you go.
WALKER
...Then we'll all die when they come for me...And they will come...
INT. MEDICAL WING HALLWAY
Harper sits down on the couch, lays his head back and SIGHS.
HARPER
Christ, what a night and it's barely started...It's gonna be a long one.
DOCTOR MAXWELL, the FBI Psychologist, walks over to Harper.
DR. MAXWELL
Talking to oneself out loud in public is never a good sign of proper mental health.
Harper glances over at Doctor Maxwell and smiles.
HARPER
There a duck in here? 'Cause I thought I heard a quack.
DR. MAXWELL
Nice one, Harper.
HARPER
Didn't know they were sending you over, Doctor Maxwell.
DR. MAXWELL
I drew the short straw. What have we got?
HARPER
Real nut job. You're definitely gonna earn your money on this one, Doc. This guy thinks he's a friggin' angel...
People are rushing by to view the television in the waiting room behind Harper. SHUSHING sounds can be heard.
Doctor Maxwell's attention is drawn toward the television. He slowly starts to walk toward the commotion.
HARPER
Hello...Doc, you listening?
Confused, Harper turns around.
HARPER
What the hell's going on around here, has everyone gone nuts?
Harper notices everyone standing around the television.
HARPER
...What the hell?
He makes his way toward it and SEES that it is a special emergency newscast.
NEWSCASTER
...Don't have word yet on how many casualties, but reports are starting to come in saying that the entire city of Seoul has been destroyed. Over ten million people live in and around the city, so if the reports are true, the loss of life is staggering...
Harper grabs the arm of the MAN standing next to him.
HARPER
What happened?
MAN
(stunned)
...North Korea nuked Seoul...
The words hit Harper like a ton of bricks. Total shock.
HARPER
What?!
NEWSCASTER
The entire world community is in shock. There has been no military response as of yet by any country, but one would expect that something will be done soon...
Harper turns and quickly makes his way to room eleven.
INT. ROOM ELEVEN
Richardson SEES the look on Harper's face as he runs in.
RICHARDSON
What's the matter?
HARPER
How did you know, Walker?!
Harper rushes over to the bed.
RICHARDSON
...Jim, what is it?!
Harper grabs Walker by the collar and lifts him halfway up off the bed.
HARPER
North Korea nuked South, just like he said, Susan!
RICHARDSON
(shocked)
What?!
HARPER
How did you know what was going to happen?!
WALKER
I told you how I know...When I sleep I see images of what might happen.
Harper lets go of Walker and backs away.
HARPER
Bull!...That's bull!
(it hits him)
Wait a minute...You're working for North Korea aren't you? That's how you knew they were going to drop the bomb, isn't it?
He walks angrily toward Walker.
HARPER
They sent you to assassinate our President because they think he's responsible for the war!
He grabs Walker by the collar.
HARPER
I'm right, ain't I?!
WALKER
I guarantee you've never been more wrong. Let me go. They'll be here any minute.
HARPER
Liar!
Harper loses it and PUNCHES Walker in the mouth, causing his bottom lip to split. Richardson tries to restrain him.
RICHARDSON
Harper, have you lost your mind?!
HARPER
You're gonna tell me the truth!
WALKER
(getting angry)
Or what, you're gonna kill me?! Not even on your best day could you kill me, pal!
HARPER
Oh yeah, tough guy?!
Harper lets go of him, then quickly pulls out his handgun and points it at Walker, who doesn't even flinch.
HARPER
Let’s just see how bad-assed you are!
&n
bsp; RICHARDSON
No!
Richardson shoves Harper out of the way and shields Walker with her body.
RICHARDSON
Harper, stop it! You have crossed over the line, Jim! Put the gun away, now!
She places her hand on the butt of her own weapon.
RICHARDSON
Don't make me do this, Jim. Put your gun away...now!
After a moment, Harper shoves his gun back into his holster.
Richardson looks down at Walker. His lip is bleeding badly.
RICHARDSON
Are you okay?
WALKER
I'll live...
RICHARDSON
(to Harper)
What the hell were you thinking?! You could lose everything with this little stunt you just pulled!
HARPER
...He's lying.
RICHARDSON
So what if he is?! That doesn't give you any right to do what you just did!
Embarrassed by his actions, Harper looks away.
HARPER
I'm sorry, Susan. You're right...
RICHARDSON
...The least you could do now is go find a doctor to stitch up his lip; it's pretty bad...
WALKER
Don't worry about it, I'm fine now...
She turns around to face Walker.
RICHARDSON
You need to have your lip looked...at...
She loses her train of thought when she SEES his lip. His cut has healed.
RICHARDSON
(shocked)
...Oh my God...Harper...Jim...come here...
After a moment, Harper walks over out of curiosity.
RICHARDSON
...His lip...It's...it's healed...
Harper is speechless.
WALKER
What more do you need to see before you finally believe? Unhook the I.V. and unlock my restraints. We don't have much time!
Richardson looks at her equally stunned partner.
RICHARDSON
…What do we do, Jim?
HARPER
This is not possible!
Suddenly, the lights go out and the faint sounds of GUNFIRE can be heard.
Harper and Richardson pull out their handguns.
HARPER
What the hell happened to the lights?!
RICHARDSON
Jim, maybe he isn't lying.
Harper moves toward the door.
HARPER
I'm gonna go see what's going on. Stay put and keep an eye on him, I'll be right back. Don't let him go!
Harper turns and exits the room.
After a moment, Walker breaks the silence.
WALKER
...Susan, I know how hard this is for you to believe...But, we are out of time. You have to listen to me, or we are dead. Susan, pull the I.V. out and unlock my handcuffs.
Richardson is unsure. She looks at Walker and then toward the door that Harper ran out.
RICHARDSON
...Harper?
INT. MEDICAL WING HALLWAY
Harper makes his way down the hallway toward the sound of the GUNFIRE while dodging people frantically running by him in the opposite direction. He grabs a MAN that was trying to run by him.
HARPER
What's happening out here?!
MAN
Let me go! They'll kill us all!
The Man forcibly pulls his arm free and keeps running away from the SOUND of the gunfire.
INT. ROOM ELEVEN
Richardson is standing next to Walker STARING at the I.V.'s in his arms. The GUNFIRE is getting closer.
WALKER
Susan...you have to make the most important decision of your life and you have to make it now...You have to believe me or we're dead.
After a very long pause, she pulls the I.V.'s out of Walker's arms, then unlocks the handcuffs.
INT. MEDICAL WING HALLWAY
Harper has almost made it to the stairway when the door CRASHES open and several LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS rush into the room.
OFFICER #1
Everyone fall back, they're right on our ass!
The doorway and the Officers are suddenly RIDDLED WITH BULLET HOLES.
Everyone ducks behind whatever cover is available. Harper finds himself behind a desk next to a POLICE OFFICER.
HARPER
What the hell is going on?!
POLICE OFFICER
You tell me, man; four men busted in through the front, shootin' anything that moves! They aren't wearing body armor but we can't put them down! They just keep comin', man!
INT. ROOM ELEVEN
Walker has almost fully recovered from the sedatives.
RICHARDSON
We've got to wait for Jim.
WALKER
He's probably dead. We can't wait. We've gotta go, now.
RICHARDSON
(she backs away)
I'm not leaving without my partner...And you're not leaving without me.
She points her gun at him.
WALKER
We don't have time for this...
He reaches down and with great strain, picks up the hospital bed and throws it through the window with enough force that it knocks off the security bars. The heavy bed and steel frame crash through the window and down onto the blacktop below.
RICHARDSON
(stunned)
Oh...My...God.
WALKER
You've got two choices; stay or come with me... If you stay, you'll die like the rest, Susan. Believe me…
She hesitates, trying to grasp everything that is happening.
INT. MEDICAL WING RECEPTION AREA
JASON MERCER appears in the smoke filled room dressed in a dark military outfit. He is tall, white, very large, and carrying a huge gatling gun.
MERCER
(German accent)
...Piggy, piggies, come out and play!
He fires the gatling gun and the room ERUPTS as bullets tear through walls and furniture.
POLICE OFFICER #2
Bring this son of a bitch down, now!
Every Law Enforcement Officer still alive in the room begins FIRING at Mercer.
Blood flies as the bullets STRIKE Mercer, but he doesn't fall. Instead, he begins laughing and FIRING back. His weapon wreaks havoc to both the Officers and the room.
The Police Officer next to Harper is STRUCK and killed. His body is thrown against Harper, knocking him down.
HARPER
Jesus!
Mercer walks down the hall, FIRING his weapon relentlessly.
Three others appear in the doorway. They are: AYLA TIMMERSON, female, mid-twenties. WYATT HOFFMAN, a tall and medium built man, and REGINALD TYSON, a very tall and thin man. They are all carrying various weapons and dressed in military gear.
TIMMERSON
(laughs; yells over gunfire)
Mercer, you maniac, save some for us!
MERCER
(laughs)
First come, first served, darlin'!
TYSON
(British accent)
You know the routine, none left alive.
Timmerson and Hoffman SHOOT the wounded as they walk down the hall behind Mercer.
Harper plays dead until the four pass by. He pushes the dead Officer off of him and gets up, then FIRES his handgun twice into Tyson's back.
Tyson falls to one knee, grimacing in pain, then stands up and faces Harper.
TYSON
Quite cowardly, shooting a bloke in his back. It's much harder to shoot a man facing you, isn't it now?
Harper pauses, then FIRES his remaining bullets into Tyson with little effect.
HARPER
(utter shock)
...Oh my God...He...He wasn't...He was telling the truth...
Tyson moves closer.
TYSON
When you say "He", I assume you're speaking of the man being held here for trying to assassinate your President. Am I correct?
Harper, stunned, says
nothing, so Tyson grabs him by the throat and lifts him up off the ground with little effort.
HARPER
(struggling)
...Oh...God...
TYSON
God?!
(smiles)
That wanker is never around when you need him, is he? Probably soiling himself as I speak now that the end is so near. Now, be useful, chap, and tell me which room Walker is in.
HARPER
...Go to Hell.
TYSON
There is such irony in that statement.
He CRUSHES Harper's throat with his hand, then throws his lifeless body THROUGH THE WINDOW.
TYSON
Ah well, your God will welcome you with open arms. Give 'em a hug for me an' tell him ol' Tyson says hi and that we'll all be seein' him soon.
EXT. PRISON EMPLOYEE PARKING LOT
Walker and Richardson have made it down to the parking lot. As they make their way toward her car, Harper's body suddenly CRASHES onto the hood of a vehicle nearby.
RICHARDSON
...Oh my God...Harper?!
She moves closer but is abruptly pulled away by Walker.
WALKER
Come on!
RICHARDSON
(struggling)
That was Jim!
WALKER
I know. I'm sorry. But, we have to go, now!
He pulls her away.
INT. MEDICAL WING HALLWAY
Tyson and the others walk down a long hall.
TYSON
We'll have to go room to room. And, let's pick up the pace a little shall we? As much fun as this is, we're not here to have a good time, we're here to do a job.
They begin checking rooms, killing anyone that they find.
Tyson is met by Mercer as he strolls down the carnage filled hallway.
MERCER
I found the room he was in!
TYSON
Was?
INT. ROOM ELEVEN
Mercer leads the team into the room and over to the broken window.
MERCER
Doesn't know when to give up, does he?
TYSON
This one has always been a pain in the arse, Mercer. But, that's what makes this hunt so much fun.
Tyson pulls out his nightvision binoculars and scans the parking lot. He SEES Walker, dressed in a hospital gown, ducking through the parking lot with Richardson by his side.
TYSON
(to himself)
Those bloody hospital gowns are always a giveaway...
Tyson adjusts the microphone on his headset and speaks into it.
TYSON
Helo-one, where are you?
INT. STEALTH HELICOPTER ONE (HELO ONE)
The heavily armed helicopter is SHOOTING DOWN Police and News Helicopters with its highly advanced weaponry. There is a PILOT and eight COMMANDOS inside the aircraft.
PILOT #1
We're east of the prison, clearing out the air traffic, sir.
TYSON (O.S.)
The target has made it to an automobile. Can you be a sport and disable it for us?
PILOT #1
We're all out of the heavy stuff, but we've still got some rounds left in our chaingun, we'll see what we can do.
INT. ROOM ELEVEN
Tyson is FOLLOWING the car with his binoculars.
TYSON
Thanks, luv...
(reads the license plate)
Let's see now; the car is a tan four door...License number, one, zero, fiver, three, six. Heading for the front gate...
He watches the car CRASH through the gate.
TYSON
...Correction, through the front gate and toward the bridge.
PILOT #1 (O.S.)
On my way.
TYSON
Helo-two are you in position?
PILOT #2 (O.S.)
Yes, sir, the roof is secured for immediate evac. We’re ready for you.
TYSON
Splendid, our E.T.A. is three minutes. Be ready to roll.
Tyson turns off the microphone on his headset and then motions to Timmerson.
TYSON
Run the plates from the auto and see what we come up with.
TIMMERSON
Already started.
Timmerson is typing in the license plate number on her portable computer that is strapped to her forearm.
HOFFMAN
I don't like sending in the Human Strike Team to do a job we should have done.
Tyson and the others head for the stairs leading to the roof.
TYSON
Neither do I, but it's the only option we have right now.
EXT./INT. RICHARDSON'S CAR
The car weaves in and out of pedestrians and vehicles as it makes its way to the bridge.
WALKER
Faster!
RICHARDSON
What do you want me to do, run over everyone?!
Walker turns on the flashing lights that designate the car as a Law Enforcement vehicle, then pushes his foot down onto her foot causing the car to accelerate.
EXT. PRISON ROOF
Tyson and the others emerge from the stairwell. As they make their way to the helicopter, Timmerson receives the information on her computer screen.
TIMMERSON
Bingo, got it...
TYSON
Talk to me, luv.
TIMMERSON
(reading off computer)
The car is checked out to F.B.I. Agents James Harper and Susan Richardson.
TYSON
Walker was with a woman.
Timmerson types in her name and the computer immediately comes up with her file.
TIMMERSON
Got her.
Tyson stops walking and takes a moment to think.
TYSON
Address?
TIMMERSON
She lives near here across the bay. Two-Sixty-Four Pine Avenue, Long Beach. Apartment number four-thirteen.
Tyson pauses for a moment, then turns on his microphone and speaks into it
TYSON
Helo-one do you copy?
PILOT #1 (O.S.)
That's affirmative. I have the car locked and am about to engage.
TYSON
Are they headed for Long Beach?
PILOT #1 (O.S.)
Yes, sir, looks like it.
TYSON
(pause)
...Cancel the order to engage, and switch to stealth mode. Recon only for right now.
PILOT #1 (O.S.)
That's-a-roger.
INT./EXT. STEALTH HELO ONE
Pilot #1 switches the controls to stealth mode.
The outside of the helicopter SHIMMERS. The outer shell of the helicopter turns to a reflective substance, which makes it almost invisible to the naked eye.
INT. STEALTH HELO TWO
Tyson and the others have loaded into the helicopter. Tyson SLAMS the sliding door shut and motions to the Pilot to take off.
The portable phone that Hoffman is carrying RINGS. He answers.
HOFFMAN
Hello...Yes, sir, one minute...
(to Tyson)
Guess who?
Tyson takes a deep breath, then let's it out before taking the phone as the helicopter lifts off the roof.
TYSON
...This is Tyson.
HILLIARD (O.S.)
Is he dead?
Tyson squirms in his seat.
TYSON
Um...We're in pursuit now and about to eliminate the target, Mister Hilliard.
EXT. UCLA MEDICAL CENTER
The security is extremely high at the center.
HILLIARD (O.S.)
In pursuit?!
INTERCUT HOSPITAL ROOM/ HELO TWO
Hilliard, who was Wayland last time we saw him, is standing away from the group of people surrounding the PRESIDENT as he speaks into his phone. Hilliard doesn’t appear to have aged a day since Vietnam.
HILLIARD
Would you mind telling me how
in the hell he escaped from the prison, Tyson?!
TYSON
Apparently, he found someone to believe him...She's an F.B.I. Agent. It appears that they're going to her apartment. We'll take care of them there.
HILLIARD
(sarcastic)
Yes, right, just like you took care of them at the prison. I should have known you'd screw this up, Tyson. I'm going to bring in the local Law Enforcement on this, so we can lock the city down.
TYSON
Sir, I don't think that's really necessary. We have the situation well under control...
HILLIARD
No, you would have the situation under control if Walker was dead! Now, I need you to email the F.B.I. Agent's address to me so I can get on this. Think you can handle that?
TYSON
...Yes, sir.
Hilliard opens his laptop and impatiently stares at the screen.
HILLIARD
…Well, send me her address sometime this evening. No rush, Tyson. You just take your sweet time.
TYSON
...Here it comes...
The information suddenly appears on Hilliard's computer screen.
HILLIARD
Hey, what do you know, you didn't screw that one up.
Hilliard hangs up the phone.
HILLIARD
Gentlemen, ladies, I need you to listen up for a moment!
Everyone in the room quiets down.
HILLIARD
I need the representatives from each Law Enforcement Agency to come with me. We have a situation to deal with and time is of the essence.
Several LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL follow him out the door.
INT. RICHARDSON'S CAR
They have made it off the bridge and are driving through town.
Walker is looking back to see if they are being followed.
RICHARDSON
...Anything?
WALKER
I don't see anyone...I think we're clear.
He turns and faces the front.
RICHARDSON
Good. My apartment is nearby. We can get you a change of clothes. My partner left his coat in the backseat.
Walker finds Harper's trench coat in the back seat and puts it on. He can SEE the sadness on her face.
WALKER
...I'm sorry about your partner.
RICHARDSON
Me too. He was a good man.
They pull up next to a four story apartment complex and exit the car. They quickly run into the building.
WALKER
You have any other weapons in your apartment?
RICHARDSON
No, just the gun I have on me.
WALKER
...Great.
INT. A
