"Publicist and Aspen Police Department issue statements"
March 11
One week after the shooting tragedy that occurred on the band Broken Access's tour bus, a media conference was held by the band's publicist, Samantha Davenport, and Aspen police Chief Robert Hingle.
Chief Robert Hingle took lead on the conference today. "On March 4, Pamela Paxton, mother to drummer Kip Paxton, entered the Aspen Snowmass Outdoor Venue. She appeared intoxicated and belligerent. Security placed Mrs. Paxton on the Broken Access tour bus while her son was on stage. Kip Paxton was immediately notified of her location and stated he along with girlfriend Henley Hendrix met with Mrs. Paxton on the bus. During the conversation, Mrs. Paxton pulled a weapon from her purse and pointed it at both Kip Paxton and Henley Hendrix. Security personnel attempted to talk Mrs. Paxton into a calmer state and requested she lower the weapon. She fired a shot into the ceiling of the bus and moments later she fired two shots at Kip Paxton and Henley Hendrix before turning the gun on herself. Pamela Paxton immediately succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Henley Hendrix received a gunshot wound to the upper chest, and another grazed her head. Ms. Hendrix was rushed to the hospital for treatment where she underwent surgery to remove the bullet from her chest. The bullet punctured her lung, and she remains in the hospital under the care of her physicians. The medical examiner has reported Pamela Paxton's blood alcohol level at 0.34 with traces of antidepressants, Xanax, and opiates in her blood. Ill now turn the conference over to Ms. Davenport."
"Good morning. I appreciate you all coming today. Chief Hingle has issued the facts of the incident so I will issue the statement on behalf of both Broken Access and Abandoned Shadow. All members would like to thank you for your support, out pour of kind words, and understanding during this difficult time. Henley Hendrix is healing and is expected to make a full recovery. The events that occurred on March 4, can only be described as tragic as Kip Paxton suffered the loss of his mother and the near loss of his girlfriend and longtime friend. Only time can heal these wounds, so it is with a heavy heart that the bands have decided to cancel the next few months of tour dates. All tickets sales will be refunded. The bands have asked for understanding and privacy as this has affected them all. They have read your social media posts and received your letters. They appreciate their loyal and supportive fans. Your thoughts help to carry them through difficult times. Thank you again for your support and understanding."

Perhaps a fly on the wall could tell us how the newest Abandoned Shadow album and tour received its name. The given history of the bands makes one wonder if it is a testament and even a prophecy of the events that have unfolded in the twelve year careers of the bands.
The members of both Abandoned Shadow and Broken Access grew up under the musical direction of famed country outlaw and blues man Red Newman. His granddaughter Henley Hendrix was first dubbed a guitar prodigy at the age of twelve when she made her debut appearance alongside Newman’s longtime friend Buddy Guy. For unknown reasons, it would take another four years until she produced an album of her own.
At the tender age of sixteen, Henley Hendrix and her band Abandoned Shadow took the world by storm with their first album. Their following grew rapidly, something not seen since the glory days of The Beatles. Caleb King was the backup vocalist and guitar extraordinaire that stood by her side since their playground days during primary school years. King quickly made his own mark in the world and Red Newman is quoted as once saying, “Listening to Caleb play is nostalgic for me. Sometimes I think I’m sitting in a room with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, and Johnny Cash all wrapped into one person.”
King’s guitar solos on stage became a famous sight fans bought tickets to see. His face graced everything from music magazine covers to teeny-bopper rags. He was an instant heart throb for the female population to fascinate on, but it was his philanthropic work that notched his fame up even higher. King was a firm believer in giving back and used his fame to encourage others to join projects he was interested in.
At a budding twenty-three years of age and in his prime, Caleb King joined the guitar gods in the inner sanctum of the universe. The sanctum reserved for those who made their mark on musical history. He and band member Henley Hendrix left a concert in Atlanta when they were struck by a drunk driver. King was thrown from the vehicle and died upon impact. Hendrix suffered severe injuries, but the videos of the famous Porsche flipping down the interstate and Hendrix’s rescue by friends Kip Paxton and Jagger Carlyle began a trend we haven’t seen again in history. But it was the videos of Hendrix attempting to revive King on the side of an interstate that reminded us all that rock stars may be musical gods, but they are mortal.
King’s untimely death was the first in many blows the bands would take. Hendrix disappeared and took Abandoned Shadow with her. As more time passed, and she was unseen, fans believed they would never hear another Abandoned Shadow album. After a four year hiatus, Hendrix was seen touring with Broken Access, members consisting of her brother, Koi Hendrix, Jagger Carlyle, Kip Paxton, and Camden Sullivan. Hendrix was assaulted by a fan while on tour with the band and suffered head injuries.
Eventually rumors began to swirl regarding the intimate relationship of Jagger Carlyle and Henley Hendrix and the fans ate it up. However, not all were ecstatic to see the two as a couple. Rumors and gossip spread like wildfire. Past conquests used the media as their platform to divulge details of Carlyle’s past exploits, attempting to drive a wedge between the couple. Eventually, one woman who will forever be remembered as the woman who broke up the “it” guitar couple would succeed where others failed. Claudia Windsor managed to take both the media and Carlyle on a goose chase for months while she claimed to be with Carlyle’s child. Before the birth of the child, Windsor’s emails were leaked showing a different side of the woman who was insistent the child was fathered by her rock star fascination. Gone were the days where she was able to garner sympathy and outrage from women across the globe. She could no longer play the helpless groupie who was forced to take a back seat to the famous Henley Hendrix while she endured her pregnancy alone. The emails told a different story. She was connected to a former boyfriend who seemed to still very much be her boyfriend. Treachery and lies began to unwind as she told the tale of how she would exploit Carlyle for money during her pregnancy. The drama came to an end when she finally gave birth. It took less than twenty-four hours for the paternity results to show Carlyle was indeed not the father.
With the entrance of Abandoned Shadow back onto the scene came another shock for not only fans, but the Hendrix family itself. It was announced Memphis Hendrix would replace Caleb King as guitarist. A search into Memphis Hendrix led us all down a road we weren’t prepared to tra
vel. A young man plagued by the lies that a father, Derek Hendrix, didn’t want him while his other two siblings grew into rock legends. The lies drove him down a path of drug abuse and self-destruction. Somehow as the rest of the drama unfolded around the bands, Memphis found his place among his family and in their music. Derek and Memphis Hendrix are reported to have a happy ending to decades of turmoil. This may be the only happy ending in the music dynasty.
Most of us hoped we would see Hendrix and Carlyle rejoined at the hip, but we were left disappointed. During the turbulent months of Windsor’s pregnancy, we saw a different side of Hendrix. Maybe she’d grown up, and we still expected her to be the rock princess we all fell in love with, but fights and arrests seemed to become a frequent pastime for the guitar goddess. She was quickly dubbed the “Bad Girl of Rock-n-Roll” and not one of us disagreed. Perhaps we were simply witnesses to the rock princess becoming the queen of rock. It was a hell of a ride for us all as we watched her give zero shits about what the media printed or how the world felt about the darker side of the once rock princess.
The first notable occurrence of Hendrix’s right hook made contact with heiress Ashley Robins. It is reported the two argued over Jagger Carlyle himself, and as the video that circulated around the globe will show, Hendrix set her straight. We’re unsure of the actual topic of discussion between the two, but Robins attacked Hendrix first in the video. We all know the result, Hendrix kicked her ass and I’m sure it is politically incorrect to say so, but we all cheered for Hendrix that day even though it landed her in jail for a night. Perhaps as entertaining as watching the cat fight was watching Kip Paxton protest her detainment from outside the precinct. Carlyle later denied any past intimate relationship with Robins.
The Guitar Goddess soon landed herself in jail over other physical skirmishes, the most notable being with Claudia Windsor. What I would give to be a fly on the wall when those two crossed one another that day. No information, and I mean none, has ever surfaced regarding what the fight was about, but we’re pretty sure we can figure it out. Windsor signed over full parental rights to the child’s actual father less than three weeks after birth. Seeing as the father was not Jagger Carlyle, we can only imagine what Hendrix must’ve felt when she saw Windsor. Memes and t-shirts sold like weapons during the zombie apocalypse, supporting the guitar goddess. Windsor no longer had the support of the public.
During the drama of Windsor’s pregnancy, Red Newman suffered a massive stroke. While it is reported he has made a miraculous full recovery, friends state Henley Hendrix did not handle the stroke well. According to sources close to her, she focused on her music. Members from both bands made the decision to produce a blues album, dedicated to Red Newman. A blues album of this caliber has not been produced since the Chess Record days. The album’s single, Whiskey and Smoke, was written by Hendrix herself as a tribute to her grandfather. Fans were ecstatic with the blue album.
Several months later, Hendrix would end up at UCLA in cardiac arrest due to an overdose. Try as her team might, they were never unable to cover the incident up and fans were heartbroken. Hendrix, nor her publicist, has ever commented on the overdose. We can only speculate her grief over King’s death, Windsor’s pregnancy, Newman’s stroke, and the demise of her relationship with Carlyle culminated into her drug use.
Hendrix again left L.A. and was soon making headlines again as a sex tape with Ian Summers was leaked. It would soon become clear, neither Hendrix nor Summer’s recorded the video or had knowledge of the steamy film before its worldwide viral spread. The world seemed to be split into two forces: those who would watch the video for years to come and cheer on the incredibly hot bodies tangled in each other. Many celebrities voiced their opinions on social media in support of the two and their privacy, and most were quite impressed with the flick. The other half of the world seemed unforgiving of Hendrix as her split with Carlyle was still a fresh wound. Hendrix’s public response was simple, and very rock-and-roll, “Regarding the asshole who placed cameras in my room and filmed me without my consent… fuck you!”
Soon the news of the illicit video would take a back seat to the news Henley Hendrix’s body guard was shot on her property while the two were out for a run. Not long after she was attacked by the same man responsible for filming her and Summers. It was later confirmed he was also responsible for shooting her bodyguard, but Hendrix wouldn’t give him the chance to again draw his weapons or another breath. During his physical and attempted sexual assault on the rocker, Hendrix shot and mortally wounded the man. If the entire situation isn’t tragic and twisted enough for you, the man responsible for all of this was Randall Johnson, brother to Christopher Johnson who is the drunk driver responsible for taking Caleb King’s life.
As time passed, and the bands headed back on tour Kip Paxton and Henley Hendrix were photographed frequently together. Their website Kipley Taking the Mother Fucking World by the Balls was updated and maintained by Paxton himself. He posts stories of the two’s exploits in the cities they visit on tour. Often pictures of the two in elaborate disguises accompany his blog posts.
Kip Paxton was long shielded from the drama of his partner in crime, but would run out of luck and soon be the next to endure crises as his father died and months later his own mother attempted to take the life of his girlfriend Henley Hendrix. She took her own life before the events were over, leaving Hendrix in critical condition and Kip Paxton devastated. If that weren’t enough it has recently come to light that famed rocker Beau Knox is Paxton’s biological father. Years of court records were exposed as Knox fought for parental rights for his son. Gary Paxton, the man listed as the father on the birth certificate, fought against Knox’s legal petitions. Hospital records indicate Kip Paxton was abused on a regular basis and was even a foster child at one point in his life. Paxton has often said in past interviews that the Hendrix family and Red Newman were his saving grace, but never confronted the issue of his abuse as a child.
Some dynasties, such as the Kennedy’s, are known for what can only be described as bad luck or a curse. Many rock entities have been surrounded by tragedy and have taken blow after blow from life. It may seem that Broken Access and Abandoned Shadow are becoming names to add to both lists. It is unclear why the latest album and tour was named “There’s No Crying in Rock-n-Roll”, but it would be a question many of us would like answered. Would it provide us insight into the tumultuous years the band members have spent fighting against events that have left them wounded and bleeding?
Chapter 24
Kip
Three weeks later
I watch Henley shifts in the bed and the pain plays across her face. She’s still stiff and in pain. I traveled back to Georgia for the funeral, put Pam in the ground, and flew back out to Colorado to be with Henley. I brought her home to Georgia a week ago. I’ve been by her side since, attempting to care for her the best I can. The truth is, it gives me something to do. Being alone with my thoughts is a dangerous scenario. All this ugly shit is inside. I don’t understand them, but I do understand the pain they cause.
My own mother tried to kill Henley before she shot herself. I’m not sure what I feel guiltier over, the fact that she shot Henley, or that I didn’t rush to her side when she shot herself. I can’t talk to anyone. There’s no one who feels sympathy for Pam. I’m her son and I hate that I feel for her. She was such a broken, lost woman. I needed time to heal from her lies before I could give our relationship another shot, and she wasn’t willing to give me that time. What the fuck was I supposed to do with that?
There’s no one to answer those questions or give me any type of insight. Beau hated her fucking guts. He has the right to hate her, she fucked him over. She took something from him and me both that we’ll never get back. I can’t talk to him. Everyone in Georgia hates her beyond the grave because of the things she did to me. Add her shooting Henley, and there leaves no one to talk to. Not a fucking soul gives a shit that she’s dead. I wish I didn’t. She d
oesn’t deserve my grief, but she has it.
Every time I see the flinch of pain on Henley’s face I hate Pam even more. She almost took her from me. Murder was premeditated. She came there to kill Henley, there’s no doubt in my mind about her intentions. She was so fucked up that she couldn’t see I was happy for the first time in my life. I was really happy. Gary was dead. Beau and I were working on our shit. Henley was in my arms almost every night and loved me back. Happy. She took that away from me again. I should probably be glad that she offed herself, but when I begin to feel that way the guilt consumes my soul and I’m left drowning in a sea of regret and disgrace.
The entire world knows what my mother did. They know she lied to me about the true origin of my life. They know Beau is my father. A father who was kept away from his son for almost three decades. Maybe I could talk to Memphis about it. He could at least provide some insight on that front. But all the rest of the shit the world knows? They know she tried to kill my girlfriend and best friend and then committed suicide right in front of me.
The world knowing me has never bothered me before now. I had nothing to hide before Pam collapsed on that bus with a bullet in her head. Now, for the first time I want to hide. I can’t face them. I don’t want them to see the shame and the broken parts of me now easily on display for all to see. I can barely face Henley each day.
My mother did this to her. My own mother is the reason the woman I love is in pain.
“Do you need anything?” I ask her as I roll and sit on the side of our bed.
“No. I was just trying to get comfortable,” she says softly.
