Tearing my gaze away from the clean strips of her skin, I set the bowl aside, extinguish the last of the lamps and slide onto the mat beside her. Tossing the linen blanket over us both, I tuck her into my side. Her head rests on my chest, her arms spread out to either side. Complete vulnerability. One that could be mistaken for trust.

I snort at that. Not gutting me with that knife she stole off Rehet had nothing to do with trust and everything to do with her own sense of survival. In the morning, when she wakes, we will see what she thinks. All females soften after a good rutting. I inhale deeply, smiling at the thought. And at our stink.

Between her unwashed odor and mine we make for a ripe pairing, yet it doesn’t matter, because her skin is soft where I touch her outer arm. So terribly soft. I work my fingers down to her hand and, reaching it, gently open her fist and extract the bread, crumbs now. I dust them off of her soft fingers and twine her fingers with my own. I exhale and let her heat wash over me.

Against the tiny shell of her perfectly rounded ear, I whisper words I know she cannot understand, but that echo through me like a vow I know I will never forget, and never be able to undo as Sasorana is my witness. “You will never go hungry again, little reesa,” I tell her in the quiet dark.

Even though she is lost from me in Sasor’s realm of dreams, she sighs just a little deeper and releases a light moan that sounds like pure happiness. Even in sleep. Such deep satisfaction is dangerous, but what is more dangerous is what it does to me. It makes my chest expand, my heart thump hard, my cock thump even harder. My manerak feels dangerous too, swirling so close to the underside of my true skin, as if it wants her too. Not now. Not yet. Patience, I tell it all the while knowing that with such imminent danger, I should shove this little reesa from my tent and put her in the pen with the other slaves. Dangerous.

But I don’t move. My manerak quiets now with the promise I’ve given him. Sleep eventually settles over me, and as it does all thoughts of danger fade away, forgotten as quickly as they’d come. They are replaced instead by the tickle of her unwashed hair against my chin and throat, and the weight of her callused hand in mine.
