  “I’m scared.”

  “What are you scared of?”

“I don’t know. Everything.” Amber lifted her head and stared at me. “I’m going to be wanted by the Russian mob, aren’t I?”

“Not if we have anything to do with it.”

“How can you do anything? No one stands up to Torchev and gets to walk away.”

I tightened my arms around her. “Don’t be defeatist, Amber,” I growled. “We’ll do it. I promise.”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

I shifted around, rolling onto my side and slipping an arm over Amber’s waist. I smiled and brushed her hair off her forehead.

“I plan to keep this one,” I vowed.

  Even if it killed me.

Amber was staring at me strangely. I felt like I was under a microscope.

“Why are you so invested in me?” she asked.

This was getting far too personal. I wasn’t about to go there. I grunted.

“You’re carrying my baby. That’s enough for me to protect you.”

“Oh.” Amber’s eyes clouded over. “Glad to know I’m a chattel.”

That sounded far too callous. I cupped her jaw, lifting her face towards me.

“I don’t see you as a chattel, Amber.” I let out a heavy sigh. “You know I can’t love. Not like that. But I will keep you safe.”

That I planned to follow through on. I hadn’t been able to be there last time, and Freya had taken advantage of it, but I was going to be around for Amber. This child was going to come into this world, and I wasn’t about to let anyone stop that. Not even Amber.

“I don’t want to go back to Khloe, Diesel,” Amber whispered. A tear escaped and trickled over her cheek. “I don’t want to be in that life again.”

“And you won’t.” I wiped the tear away with my thumb. “I’ll look after you. That I do promise.”

I didn’t want to see her cry again. Against my promise, I shifted closer and kissed her. I expected Amber to push me away and tell me to leave her alone. If she had, I would have got out of bed, even though it would be physically painful. But Amber sighed and slid against my chest, opening her mouth at my gentle coaxing, sliding her tongue against my lips.

I knew I needed to back away. But I couldn’t stop myself. Amber was a big weakness, one that I needed. And I needed her now.

My hands slid over her body, cupping her backside before sliding underneath her pajama bottoms. Amber moaned as my palms covered her buttocks, giving her a firm squeeze. Her breasts pressed against my chest as she kissed me more fervently. Even through her top, her nipples were pebbled hard and rubbing against my torso.

I groaned and shoved her panties off, not caring where they disappeared to. Amber eagerly put a leg over my hips, and I rubbed my fingers over her pussy. Amber broke the kiss and threw back her head with a moan, rocking against my hand. She was so wet, her thighs already slick. She was more aroused than I had expected. I groaned as I thrust two fingers into her pussy, feeling her muscles clamp around me. Amber was immediately panting, still rocking against me. Her hand managed to get between us and into my boxers, taking my cock in a firm hold, and pumping my shaft.

I felt like my heart was about to come out of my chest. I reluctantly pulled my hands away, making Amber whimper and try to press me closer, tugging my boxers off. Amber’s whimpers turned to satisfied moans, and she rubbed her wet pussy against me. I had never felt so close to coming before. I rolled onto my back, draping Amber over me.

“Ride me,” I rasped. “I want to see you.”

Amber gave me a sly grin before sitting up. She took my cock in her hand and slowly lowered herself onto me. Her head fell back with a sigh, and I couldn’t take my eyes off my cock sliding into her pussy. The sight was a more erotic than I had anticipated.

Amber sat firmly in my lap and rolled her hips. Quickly, her fingers unbuttoned her pajama top and tossed it aside. Her breasts certainly looked fuller, firmer. I reached up and cupped them, rolling her nipples in my fingers. Amber moaned and began to ride me. She looked beautiful with her red hair falling about her shoulders, curling around her breasts as she fucked me. I gripped her hips and forced her to move faster. I lifted my hips as Amber thrust down, watching my cock hammer into her pussy.

Amber had always been so responsive to me. But now it was different. It was as if Amber’s reaction was more intense, and I could feel it. Her orgasm was building faster, her pussy clenching and fluttering so much that I felt like I was going to explode.

And I did. Moments after Amber’s body became taut and she moaned through her climax, I felt my orgasm hit me hard. I shuddered and pressed Amber firmly down on my cock, my seed filling her. Amber was gasping, sweat trickling down her body. I sat up and held her close, licking the sweat away. Amber sighed, running her hands through my hair as she held me against her. Her heart was hammering against her breast. Or was that my heart? I didn’t know anymore.

Then I felt Amber’s pussy flex and her hips move. Almost immediately, my cock came back to life. This had never happened before. Even after that, I was ready for more almost immediately.

“You feel like you’re up for more.”

“I know.” Amber was panting, rocking her hips again. “I shouldn’t, but I want more.”

Me too. I flipped us, putting Amber underneath me and lifting her legs to my shoulders.

“Think you can handle me again?” I rasped, thrusting into her.

Amber gasped and arched into me.

“I think I should be asking you that question.”

  Chapter Twenty Three

  Diesel

I didn’t get much sleep that night. Every time I thought about it, something had me reaching for Amber again. She was incredibly responsive, more than she ever had been, and I couldn’t get enough. It was dawn when they finally collapsed in exhaustion, and even then they couldn’t rest. They had to leave before the clerk came back, possibly with the police. I didn’t want to know how loud they had been during the night with the lovemaking.

And, frankly, I didn’t really care. But I didn’t want a fight with the police. Not right now.

With Amber dozing in the passenger seat, I drove us back to Eden and to my condo, which was on the outskirts. It had once been a farming ranch, so there was a lot of land that was barely used now. But it meant I had a fortress, and it was isolated. Just how I liked it.

There were no signs of anyone having been in my house, but that meant that they hadn’t got past the traps on the edge of my land. I would have a look over them later. Right now, I was too tired to think about it. Noah had messaged me to meet up at midnight near Ruiz’s home. We were going to take him. Hopefully, this nightmare would be over soon.

But I wasn’t in the mood to think about the next night. I was more concerned about Amber. And getting my sleep. Amber was fast asleep as I carried her into the house, putting her in my room. I tucked her into the bed, Amber only responding with a gentle sigh before settling down. It had been a very long time since I had had any woman in my bed, much less had them sleep in it, and it was a slightly alien concept. But seeing Amber in my bed, huddled under the duvet with her hair spread across the blue pillows, it looked like she had been there always.

I pushed these thoughts away and undressed, sliding into bed beside her. Amber shifted, but she didn’t come any closer. I didn’t know whether to be relieved or annoyed about that; I wanted Amber close, but I knew if I touched her, I would be waking her up for sex again. And they needed sleep.

And sleep came very easily. I managed to have a sleep that was so deep, I had no idea where I was when I opened my eyes. No nightmares had come, just blackness that wrapped around me. And blackness was wrapping around the room when I did finally wake. A glance at the clock said it was after ten at night. We had been asleep for twelve hours.

Amber was still asleep. I was reluctant to leave her, but I had promised to be there to capture Ruiz Fernandez. That I didn’t plan to
miss. I slipped out of bed and dressed quietly, padding into the kitchen and switching on the coffee machine. I had enough food for Amber, should she want to eat anything when she woke up. Perhaps I would leave a note, just to make sure she didn’t panic.

  “What time is it?”

I turned. Amber was in the doorway, wearing her sweats from the day before. They were wrinkled, and one leg was hiked up about her knee. Her hair was a mess and her eyes were half-closed in sleep. But she still looked lovely. I swallowed hard.

  “It’s quarter past ten.”

“At night?” Amber’s eyes widened, and then she yawned loudly. “I didn’t realize we had slept that long.”

“Well, we were up all night. I would be surprised if you didn’t pass out from it.” I indicated the fridge. “Do you want something to eat? I can make you something.”

“I’m starving.” Amber snagged my hand before it reached the fridge door, easing it away. “But I’ll make it. I have a feeling you’ll blow up the kitchen.”

“I’m not that bad at cooking, am I?”

“I’ve heard stories, and I don’t want to be on the end of it.” Amber opened the fridge and looked inside, drawing back with a pack of bacon and the butter. “With a baby on the way, I need to make sure everything’s cooked properly.”

I pretended to be offended. “As if I would give you food poisoning.”

Amber laughed as she put the bacon and butter on the counter. Then she opened the bread bin.

“If I’m going to have nausea throughout the next few months, I would like my food to taste delicious.”

  “You can cook?”

“I know how to make a mean bacon sandwich.” Amber held up the bacon. “You want some?”

“No, thanks. I’ve got to head out in a minute.” I opened a cupboard and fished out a frying pan, which I put on the stove. “There’s some juice in the fridge if you want that instead of water or milk.”

“Thanks.” Amber frowned up at me. “Where are you going?”

I silently cursed. I shouldn’t have said anything. If I had been lucky, I could have sneaked out before Amber woke up. Now my luck seemed to have run out. And Amber didn’t need to know what I was up to.

“It’s club business,” I finally said, briskly.

Amber’s expression said everything. “Okay, I see. Club business. Means I need to stop asking about it.”

  “Pretty much.”

“Fine.” Amber turned away and used a spoon to put some butter into the pan. “I’ll stop talking. But any idea when you’ll be back?”

“Hopefully before dawn.” I could see the tension in her back. I resisted the urge to reach out and rub the tension away. The damn woman turned me inside-out. “But you’ll be protected here. I have a security system that’s top-range. And there are trip-wires and traps around the perimeter, so no one’s getting in.”

“You say that, but they still managed to get into Khloe’s brothel.”

“But Khloe didn’t have what I’ve got.” And I wasn’t entirely convinced that Khloe didn’t leave the door open for us. “You’ll be safe here as long as you stay inside. The TV isn’t difficult to work, and there are several DVDs to watch if you want…”

“I guess.” Amber was staring at the pan, which hadn’t been heated up. She sounded dejected. “I’ll find something to do.”

I knew I needed to go, but I couldn’t bring myself to leave. I wanted to stay with Amber. But she couldn’t come with me, and I wanted to make sure that Ruiz Fernandez came into our custody. By my hand, if necessary.

The bastard had a lot to answer for.

I approached Amber and laid my hands on her shoulders. Amber tensed but she didn’t move away.

  “I won’t be long,” I whispered. “I promise.”

“You’ve been making a lot of promises lately.”

“And have I kept them all?” I couldn’t remember, but I bluffed. “Yes.”

  Amber sighed heavily.

“I don’t know about that, but I do know that I don’t want you to go. And that’s scary.”

  “Why is it scary?”

“Because it’s showing I’m becoming attached to you.” Amber turned, looking up at me with nervous eyes. “I told myself I would never do that again.”

I hadn’t had anyone attached to me for years. No woman had been reliant on me. To hear this from Amber was surprisingly enough to swell my chest with pride. I fought this away and managed a smile.

“It’s not a weakness. It just shows that you care. That’s not a weakness.”

  “In our world, it is.”

“I don’t think so.” I tilted her chin with my fingers and kissed her softly. “Stay safe.”

  “And you.”

I knew I needed to leave. If I didn’t, I was going to be dragging Amber back to bed. Slowly, I stepped away from her and left the kitchen. Everything inside me itched to grab her, put her on the counter, and fuck her until she was screaming my name again. She was infectious.

Mason would have my head if I was late. I didn’t want to get into another chewing out about the importance of being punctual. Everyone was tense enough as it was, knowing we were up against two rival factions, a combination that could easily wipe us out. We didn’t need in-fighting as well.

  Chapter Twenty Four

  Diesel

Ruiz lived on the far side of Eden, on his own ranch. This one, unlike mine, was fully functioning. There were horses and cattle about, and even in the middle of the night the place seemed to be thriving with activity. As I pulled up beside Mason’s car on a track overlooking the ranch, I could see several cars around the main building.

Ruiz had a lot of protection. This was going to be interesting.

Mason and half a dozen other bikers were kneeling by the edge of the road, everyone silent and unmoving. Mason was looking down through binoculars. He looked up and scowled as I joined him.

“Where the fuck have you been?”

  “I was doing some scouting.”

Mason rolled his eyes. “Scouting something other than your job, I bet.”

“Believe what you want.” I settled beside him. “We can argue about my whereabouts later.”

Mason grunted. Then he handed the binoculars to me. I focused them on the main house and counted five cars, with at least six men walking around. There were laborers in the nearby paddocks, and even in the middle of the night the downstairs lights were still on. The place was abuzz.

My heart sank. This wasn’t going to be easy at all. Mason had only rounded up six men, believing that would be enough. Now we would have a very slim-to-none chance of getting what we wanted.

  “Is Ruiz inside?”

“Yes. Noah’s having a scout around right now. He says that Ruiz has his bodyguards watching over him. They work in rotating shifts.”

  “Noah’s been scouting?”

“He’s still the best I’ve got.” Mason gave me a rueful look. “And he scouts in the right places.”

I bit back a growl. Now was not the time to argue. I saw movement in the doorway of the house and watched as a man appeared and spoke to another man on guard at the door. Then he stepped off the threshold and headed around the side of the house. I followed after him. I knew that bastard. Carlos Herrera, Ruiz’s right-hand and chief bodyguard. He was also a regular visitor to the brothel. Amber had mentioned that Herrera had paid for her time, but she never said if it was sexual or not. I felt the anger rise in my belly. The bastard was never going to touch Amber again. Not if I had anything to do with it.

“So,” I surmised grimly. “Going after him is going to be difficult.”

“Pretty much.” Then Mason turned when he heard a muffled shout. “That sounds like Noah now.”

I looked through the undergrowth, but it was too dark to see if anyone was there. Then someone touched my arm and suddenly Noah was kneeling beside me, his hair covered with a black baseball cap and wearing black. With his face blacked out with grease, he blended in perfectl
y with the background.

“Fuck, Noah! Did you have to do that?”

“I didn’t want to be noticed.”

“By them, not us.” I handed Mason back his binoculars. “And what’s with the commando look?”

Noah smirked. “It worked. Herrera walked right by me and he didn’t see me.” Noah turned to Mason. “Taking Ruiz will be impossible. He’s practically inside a fortress.”

“Shit!” Mason hissed. “What do you suggest we do?”
