“Look,” he said, still facing the ocean. “There’s other people out there. You have nothing to worry about. Chances are, if there’s a shark or killer whale, it’ll bite one of them first.”

Her heart lurched, but a burst of laughter flew from her mouth anyway. “Killer whale? Now there are orcas out there?”

He turned back to her, a crooked smile on his lips. “You never know.”

Great. She tied her hair in a ponytail, picked up her board and started toward the water before she changed her mind.

“Where are you going?” Brett called to her.

  “I thought we were surfing.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. “I have to give you some instructions first. You can’t just go out there without knowing what to do.”

She hadn’t expected to surf in the literal sense. She thought she’d just paddle out and float face down on the board. She stood with her ankles in the water and turned away from Brett to look into the horizon. Other than a handful of people, the beach was secluded. But those in the water were only floating with their chests on small surfboards. No one was actively surfing.

“Get back here, you daredevil, so I can give you a couple of lessons.”

She trudged through the sand with the heavy board and returned to Brett’s side, ready for instruction.

He took the two surfboards and placed them parallel on the sand. “Watch me, carefully, but don’t do anything yet. Just watch.” He demonstrated by lying flat on the surfboard and then sprung to a standing position.

She was about to do the same when he stopped her.

“Let me explain first,” he said, still standing with his feet firmly planted on the board.

She folded her arms and tapped her foot, gazing up at the sky while he rambled on. She suddenly realized that it was quiet and that he stopped talking.

“You got it?” he asked. “Do you need me to demonstrate how to pop up again, or are you ready to try it?”

She tried not to roll her eyes. “Yes. I think I can handle it. I don’t need step-by-step instructions on how to stand. I’ve been doing it since I was two.”

“Let me see you try it, smarty-pants.” He lay face down on the board with his toes perched perfectly and his hands flat on the face of the surfboard.

She thought she mimicked his posture perfectly, but he corrected her form.

“Look at my hands,” he said.

“I’m looking.” She was looking all right. His posture had his perfectly round butt on display, and it was hard for her to concentrate on anything else. He noticed and stopped speaking to smile at her.

Embarrassed, she pressed her nose into the board and tried not to laugh.

  “Pay attention. This is serious.”

“I am.” She tried to hide her smile, but her grin was completely on display, and she let out a small laugh before she repositioned herself on the board to replicate his posture. “How’s this?”

He pressed his hand on her lower back to straighten her body, and the pressure sent a tingle over her limbs. She swallowed and blew a stray lock of hair off her forehead, suddenly overheated. She glanced at his face, which was full of concentration as he studied her position on the board, unaware of the effect he had on her. He caught her gaze and stopped speaking. Too hypnotized by the way the sun reflected off his amber eyes and his thick dark beard, she wasn’t even aware that he had been giving her instructions.

With their eyes locked together, he slipped his hand around her waist and lie parallel in the sand next to her. She turned to her side and rolled off the surfboard, so she could press her body against his, and he kissed her.

“Is this part of my lesson?” she asked, breathlessly.

“No. This is from my heart.” He kissed her again, this time with so much passion that it made her skin burn. The tide came in unannounced and surrounded them in cool water, but it didn’t extinguish the fire inside of her.

“I think we better get back to our lesson,” he whispered.

“I think you’re right,” she admitted, and rolled out of his arms before things went too far. She kept her head down as she got into position on her board. She listened to Brett’s instructions, her heart still pounding rapidly and her breath leaving a small circle of steam on the fiberglass.

Filled with adrenaline, she jumped to a standing position the moment he said, “Get ready to spring up.” She promptly lost her balance, fell, and landed on top of him. He hadn’t even moved. He was still face down on the surfboard, only now she was sprawled on top of him like a giant spider, with her hands and feet in the sand on either side of his face and legs.

She laughed hysterically as he rolled over, so they were face to face. She lowered her head into his chest and felt it rise and fall as he chuckled softly.

“Are you trying to kill me?” he asked.

“I’m sorry. I lost my balance and I fell.”

  “No shit?”

His hands snaked around her back and held her close to him. As she stared into his beautiful brown eyes, with her breasts pressed against his hard chest, her laughter slowly subsided. She felt the rugged strength of his muscles underneath her, and it stirred things inside of her. She smothered him with a kiss that was filled with equal amounts of passion and joy. Every time they were together, he brought fun and spontaneity into her life, along with an overwhelming dose of insatiable desire. His hand glided down her back over the smooth wetsuit, leaving a tingle trailing underneath his fingertips. When he cupped the globe of her ass, she let out a little moan. His erection pressed firmly into her thigh, conveying his arousal.

The soft roar of the waves crashing in the background made her feel as if she were starring in a movie, where romance dominated the screen. The tide rolled up the shoreline and bathed them in a spray of white foam. It did little to cool her heated flesh, and she wanted out of the suffocating wetsuit. She pulled at the zipper, snaked her arms free and shoved the top part of it down to her waist, barely breaking their kiss.

His eyes were glazed and hooded as they dropped to the curve of her breasts spilling over the tiny bikini top. He grinned and motioned to the left with his chin. “There’s privacy in that cabana.”

With heat flushing her face, she rolled off him, so she was sitting in the sand with her legs stretched out in front of her and leaning back on her hands. There were a few people in the water, and several groups of people scattered around the private beach, but no one close enough to see what they were doing. Was she really considering sex on the beach in broad daylight? She couldn’t contain the light laugh that escaped her and dropped her chin into her chest. Fuck it! Convention could go to hell. Spirited fun and spontaneity took precedence. Not to mention lust. She grabbed his hand, jumped up and pulled him toward the cabana.

They fell on the cushions and into each other’s arms, laughter punctuating their antics. “Are we really going to do this?” she asked.

“Do what?” he teased. “Relax in this awesome cabana while staring at the gorgeous blue sky and endless ocean?”

“Yeah.” She nodded playfully. “That’s what we’re going to do.”

He leaned over and grabbed several towels from the side table. “Let’s put these down.”

It immediately reminded her of their fling in Starbucks when he put his shirt on the bathroom counter before lifting her onto it.

“What?” he asked, when he noticed she was staring at him.

“Nothing.” As they placed the towels lengthwise across the cushion in order to create a clean, fresh surface, she marveled at his thoughtfulness. What guy thinks about these small details when they were about to score? Brett Navarro, that’s who.

She unsnapped the tiebacks that held the panels open on each of the four posts, and they were afforded privacy in the way of sliding opaque curtains. They were virtually sealed off from the rest of the world as if in their own island paradise.

“Nice touch.” A strong hand slid across her back and pulled at
the string to her bikini top. “Oops,” Brett said, with a smile in his voice.

She spun around to face him, holding the tiny material over her breasts, which was ridiculous because they were alone.

His fingers snaked around her neck and pulled at the last strings that held the top in place, and then he snatched it away so she was left with her hands covering her nipples. A laugh fell from her mouth. “Are you a magician? It was like you pulled the tablecloth from under a set table without breaking any dishes.”

  “I got skills.”

“Mad skills,” she said, breathlessly, and dropped her hands.

His eyes fell to her bare breasts, and his lips parted as if he wanted a taste, but it was her mouth that he captured. His lips fell onto hers with a hunger, and he devoured them. It sent a wave of heat through her, hotter than the Miami sun. She was burning up and needed to take off the rest of the wetsuit, but she didn’t get a chance.

Brett lifted her from the sand in one quick motion as if she were as light as a feather and placed her on the extra-large cushioned lounger. As she exhaled a heated breath, he roughly ripped the wetsuit from her waist, then pulled at the strings to her tiny bikini bottom with a delicate touch and whisked it away. The ocean breeze hit her most delicate area with a light flutter of warmth that caused goosebumps to rise over her flesh.

Brett pushed his wetsuit over his shoulders and down to his knees, exposing the ridges and curves of his hard muscles. And his hard shaft. She realized that they didn’t have a condom and almost whimpered with disappointment, but Brett had obviously already devised an alternative plan. His mouth left a wet trail of kisses down the center of her body as he moved lower. Her breath hitched, and she spread her legs wider with invitation. His lips and tongue found their intended target and she sighed deeply. Arching her back, she clutched his hair in her fist as she inhaled a deep gust of air. Her breasts were full as they projected toward the sky. The curtain flapped, allowing a slight breeze to pass over her pointed nipples, making her shudder. The fresh ocean air, combined with the floral scent of the baby soft towels beneath her, and the crashing waves in the distance, assaulted her senses. Her nerve endings were alive with a million feelers, absorbing everything – touch, scent, and sound.

While Brett’s magnificent tongue twirled in purposeful circles, his fingers entered her with long, leisurely thrusts. His beard raked across her inner thighs, creating an abrasion that both tickled and scraped against her skin. This man was such a magnificent mixture of hard and soft. Each gentle touch also brought his scratchy beard closer to her most sensitive parts. He moved his mouth and suddenly his rough beard scoured her nub, relentlessly, as he rubbed his chin back and forth against it. Sensations multiplied and exploded in a fury of ecstasy. Shudders wracked her body, and her shoulders jolted off the cushion in short jerky motions while she panted heavily from the onslaught of euphoria.

She was suddenly dizzy and opened her eyes. The draping over the top of the cabana was sheer enough for her to see the sky and the fluffy white clouds. It was heaven. She lay back and let rapture engulf her in bliss as stimulation flooded her core. Wave after wave of pleasure inundated her body and mind, pushing her to the edge of delirium. When the overwhelming sensations subsided enough for her head to clear, she blinked several times to refocus on her surroundings. She gulped and rested her hand over her frantically beating heart. Apparently, it wasn’t heaven. It was just Brett.

“I think I just died for a few seconds,” she said, with complete seriousness.

He let out a short chuckle and wiped his face with one of the towels.

She sat up and pulled him to her lips. Caught up in the moment, she almost blurted out, I love you, Brett Navarro, but quickly amended it to, “I’m crazy about you, Brett Navarro, and I’m going to show you just how much—” She stopped when she felt the wetness covering his shaft.

He chuckled again. “You already did. Do you think I could withstand those noises you were making? I think I climaxed before you did.”

Embarrassed, she dropped her chin into her chest. “Was I loud?”

“Not so much. It was the moaning that did me in.” He wrapped his arms around her and rolled onto the cushions, cradling her to his chest. With one hand, he covered their nakedness with a towel, and they both stared up at the clear blue sky. He sighed. “This is really nice.”

Her body may have been lounging in a cabana on the beach, but her head was still up in those clouds, and it would be for a long time. She had no idea what just happened to her. It was some kind of out-of-body experience that left her almost shaken. Whatever Brett just did to her affected, not just her body, but her mind and her heart.

They stayed in the cabana for a long time and actually dozed off for a few minutes before they dressed and ventured outside of the protective curtains. Luckily, there wasn’t an audience and their little rendezvous seemed to have gone undetected.

Kira sat in the sand and rested her forearms on her knees and stared into the ocean while the warm breeze blew her hair around her face. It was serene and peaceful. Birds flew leisurely over the water, dipping and gliding across the sky. She felt lighthearted and free, relaxed, and de-stressed from the heavy workload that usually weighed her down. The tension in the back of her neck was gone, and calmness filled her spirit.

Brett sat next to her. His firm hand covered her hip and tugged her closer to him. His lips tickled her ear with a kiss, and he whispered, “Are you ready to try again?”

“Again?” she asked, raising her brows with surprise.

“I meant, are you ready to continue with your surf lesson?”

“Oh.” She laughed a little. “We’re still doing that?”

He pulled her to her feet and over to where their surfboards lay in the sand. “We’re not leaving until you at least catch one wave.”

She reluctantly conceded. “Let’s try this again.” She positioned herself on the board like before, only this time she was more limber and confident that she wouldn’t fall. She paid attention to Brett’s instructions, and she waited for his countdown before she popped up on the board. She actually stood for a second or two before she teetered and fell. Brett, who was standing on his surfboard as graceful as a cat on a ledge, caught her in his arms.

  “Be careful,” he said.

“I thought I had it this time. Why is it so hard?”

“It’s all about balance. If you can walk around in those heels all day, you can stand on a surfboard barefoot. Try it again.”

After another half dozen tries, she finally managed to spring to her feet and stay on the surfboard without falling. She stood with her arms out to steady her balance, teetering slightly but in control. “I’m doing it! I’m surfing!” Tired of wasting time on the sand, she picked up her board and ran into the water.

“Slow down!” he called after her. “Wait for me!”

She continued running and laughed over her shoulder as she looked back at him. Really, she was only teasing him. She had no intention of attempting to ride a wave without him. In truth, she was a little nervous. A wave could crash over her head like a cinderblock. The surfboard could knock her unconscious, and she could drown. And, let’s not forget the sharks. She abruptly stopped running. What the hell was she doing out here? As she stood perfectly still and second guessed her decision to learn how to surf, Brett caught up to her.

“Why’d you stop? The way you were going, I thought I was going to have to charter a boat to catch up to you.”

“I don’t know about this. I could get hurt. Or killed.”

“We’re not at Pipe. These are ankle busters.”

She blinked at him. “I don’t know what either of those things are. Which means, I’m not ready.”

“Don’t overthink it. You’ll be fine.”

She gave him a cautious look.

“Just one wave. That’s it. Then we can go back to the hotel. At least you’ll be able to tell people you surfed.”

  She was looking forwar
d to the bragging rights. No one would expect a city girl like herself to surf. I can do this, she reassured herself, and then nodded at him. They straddled their boards and paddled out pretty far, which made her unsure. The beach looked miles away, and she began to worry about the depth of the ocean and what lurked beneath. “Are you sure there are no sharks out here?”

“I never said there weren’t any sharks. Actually, I think I specifically said that there are sharks out here.”

Her head snapped in his direction while her belly did a backflip.

“I also said a shark would probably eat someone further out in the ocean than us. Look.” He pointed to three surfers who were a significant distance away. “They’ll act as a buffer.”

  She rolled her eyes. “Great.”

He reached out and touched her leg tenderly. “Hey. There’s nothing to worry about. I wouldn’t put you in danger. I’m an excellent swimmer. I grew up at the beach. I’ve been surfing since I was eight. Do you trust me?”

  She nodded, feeling significantly reassured.

“Get ready to take this wave coming in.” He spun his board around quickly and got into position.

Nerves made her heart race, but there was no time to think about it. Plus, she just wanted to get this over with. She turned her board around to face the beach and looked over her shoulder at the giant wave. Actually, it was only about a three-foot swell, but she had little confidence that she was going to be able to stand up on the board for more than a few seconds, at most. She was probably going to nosedive right into the water. The surfboard would hit her on the head, and she’d die out here.

Whatever tiny bit of confidence she had disappeared, and fear took over. She clutched the sides of the surfboard as the wave, and her eyes, grew larger with each second. Her gaze shot to Brett, who quickly realized that she wasn’t going to follow along. He nodded with understanding and paddled over to her.

Just as he took her hand and squeezed it with reassurance, the swell traveled underneath their surfboards and lifted them high into the air. For a brief second, fear gripped her by the throat, but then the wave passed, and she was floating on the water’s surface again. It made her tummy flip-flop, but in a good way, and she was reminded of some of the water rides she’d been on as a kid. A smile spawned on her lips and she laughed a little. “That was fun!”
