Overcome with victory and relief, Twist pulled her closer and kissed her metal lips. In a flash, the copper melted away into cool, soft flesh as she returned his kiss. Pulling back again, Twist’s words fell lifeless from his grasp. He let them go. They’d done their job. He opened his hand, which still held the diamond ring. Seeing it, Myra gasped in sudden understanding and let out a delighted sound. Her copper form returned to his senses, and she offered him her left hand.

Twist slipped the ring onto her finger and smiled at the way the white gold complemented her shining copper. He looked back up to her warm smile and realized instantly that whenever he did die, he’d now be able to do so without regret. The sound of applause roused him from the bliss that drenched him to the bone. Myra and Twist turned to find everyone else on the ship now standing a little way off, clapping and smiling at them.

“Oh, I’m going to cry!” Arabel said, hiding her face behind her hands.

Howell, Philippe, and Aazzi all looked on proudly while they applauded, and Zayle gave a whistle. The two gypsies clapped as well, smiling broadly to them, as Twist and Myra got back to their feet. Twist caught Jonas’s bright blue eyes and wasn’t at all put off by his friend’s smug expression.

“As if she was ever going to say no,” Jonas admonished, shaking his head.

Myra giggled and turned back to kiss Twist’s cheek with her metal lips. “You weren’t worried that I would, were you?” she asked him playfully.

“Well, you never know…” Twist muttered.

Myra laughed and kissed him again. “You’re too humble, darling.”

“Right,” Howell said with some finality. “There’s got to be something to drink on this boat. Ara, do we still have any champagne?”

“I’ll go check,” she said brightly, hurrying off.

Everyone began to offer congratulations. Jonas hugged Myra and spun her round in a circle while she giggled happily. Twist was grateful that no one offered a handshake with their well wishes, and thanked them for their kindness. Before he knew it, everyone on the airship was drinking to his and Myra’s happiness, while the sky darkened into a rich blue.

As it didn’t seem about to end any time soon, Twist let himself relax into the brilliant joy that had suddenly become his. All the fear he’d encountered since leaving Hawaii vanished from his thoughts like a candle flame before a gale. No matter what tomorrow brought, Twist knew that he would face it gladly, boldly, and without fear. Tonight, his world was made of nothing but light.
