His sudden smile was unexpected, and the light in his grey eyes belied his age. Clarie imagined he’d been much admired by the ladies in his younger days. Her daydreaming made her miss the next part of the wizard’s speech, until he clapped his hands.
“Now—I think I’ve said more than enough! Strike the tabors, good players, and we’ll raise a glass to King Fynn, and salute the å Livåri, who saved the day by bravely taking up the fight and proving wrong those who lacked faith in their worth. May they be granted the keys to every hamlet and town across the realms, as they have been here in Drinnkastel. Indeed, I salute all of you gathered here, for you continue to protect the light of justice and goodness that is our Isle’s crowning jewel!”
The hall rang with cheers, and Clarie, stirred by the wizard’s words, leaned toward the magnificent elf nearest her, planted a kiss on his perfect lips, and seized a tankard off the table.
“To our fair Isle!” she sang out, raising it high. “To Drinnglennin!”

Afterword
I started writing Portents of Chaos in August of 2014, and completed The Wings of Dread, the fourth and final book of The Drinnglennin Chronicles, that same month in 2020. Throughout these six years, I’ve grown to know and love (most of) my characters, and with each turning of the seasons, I’ve become more and more deeply immersed in this fantasy realm of my creation. My husband Uwe liked to joke that he got me “back” from Drinnglennin every day at 5:00 p.m., but in truth, there were countless nights when I’d wake up in the wee hours to make a note of a particular phrase that had arisen in my dreams or of a plot point to be more fully explored. Leif, Halla, Maura, Borne, Whit, Fynn, Master Morgan, the dragons, and all the supporting cast of characters have inhabited my mind daily, and now that the series is completed, I find I’m not quite ready to let them go.
I’m still pondering which direction those who inhabit the Known World could lead me, but I’m certain they have further lives to live. And there’s another generation to follow, with stories of their own to tell…
