  To the victor, the spoils. Owen went to see Nuri.

  Nuri seemed preoccupied. He was he said, leaving for Cannes that afternoon.

  ‘The weather, dear boy. Things are getting a bit hot here.’

  Miss Skinner? He might run into her at Cannes; in fact, he rather expected to.

  ‘I gather she will be leaving Egypt shortly.’

  Miss Skinner was another one who invoked privileges.

  ‘Your uncle? The next President?’

  ‘I am afraid not,’ said Miss Skinner. ‘He lost out in the Primaries. No, Capitulatory.’

  Marbrouk?

  ‘A nasty fellow, dear boy. Take my advice and have nothing to do with him.’

  But Zeinab?

  Nuri shook his head dubiously.

  ‘An independent girl. Takes after her mother. She was my favourite courtesan, you know. Never would marry me. Though I asked her to. Many times.’

  Zeinab curled her legs up under her.

  ‘I’ll have to think about it,’ she said. ‘That’s the British thing to do, isn’t it?’
