Further into the city centre, Jackson was sitting at his desk in the CSI office when Kevin walked in. ‘Hiya, cuz. You got a minute?’
‘Not like I’m going anywhere with pins in my arm. What’s up?’
‘There’s a CSM course coming up in April – I’ve just had the email notification. I think you should go for it. There’ll be other interest, of course, but you’ve been getting a handle on the office side of the work since breaking your elbow. Your stats are fab. It’s being backed by the boss, who’s offered to coach you, if you need it, too. Cass and Jason are in agreement.’
Jackson sat back in his chair. ‘Me? But Deena has more experience, so does Johnny, for that matter.’
‘They do, but Deena is going off and doing a secondment, and Johnny is still dealing with his mum. They don’t want to go for it, at the minute. There’s a couple applying from south of the county, but you’re in good stead, if it’s something you fancy.’
Jackson grinned. ‘Definitely. Put me down. I’ll do whatever I need to.’
‘Great. Did Ali come and tell you they found an abandoned school that they believe is where Cox took all those people? Even found a journal logging what he did to each one. How sick is that? Glad the world is rid of that one.’
‘Yeah, he emailed me with it. Said they found nineteen pairs of shoes in the room next to the office. One of the pairs was from a kid. Sick isn’t even the right word. That’s a lot of bodies we’ve not recovered. Wonder where they are?’
‘He’d put something in the journal about the moors on the way to Whitby. Think they’re gunna start a search over that way but using the local police force.’
‘Death is the easy option for a monster like him.’
Kev went quiet and nodded, before getting to his feet and leaving Jackson alone again in the room.
He picked his mobile up and sent a quick text to TJ.
Be home soon, babe. Tough day.

Acknowledgments
As always, Bloodhound Books make getting published an absolute pleasure – I’m honoured to work with such an amazing set of people. From the designer, to my lovely editor Claire, to Betsy and Fred, and the lovely Sarah, Sumaira and Alexina.
This book is based around a dark serial killer, one who is pretty normal to the outside world. It was hard at times to get into his head, but worth it as his story unfolded and I found myself both liking and disliking him.
I couldn’t have written this novel without the patient help from some of the fab people I work with – CSM David Mason who is there with an answer for virtually any question – even the strange ones! Without his help this novel would not have been possible. Inspector Caz Shields has also helped me out with any procedural issues I’m not sure on. And to all my CSI friends who are always there with inspiration and answers when I need them – you’re fabulous. Thank you.
My whole family are so supportive – my husband Peter, who makes the best coffee even if I let it go cold when I’m ‘in the zone’. My lovely mam, Jeannet, who whisks me away from the laptop for much needed downtime. My dad, Derek, who encourages me to get the books finished so I can become rich and buy him his Aston Martin. The support and patience my family provide is unwavering and constant. They all make me so proud every single day.
My close friends are my rocks – constant support through good and bad, and not being too shy to tell me when I’m doing something I shouldn’t be! You know who you are – but to mention a few names (by no means all) Claire, Angela, Dionne, Rachel, Vicky, Eileen, Michelle and Char. Keep reaching for the moon, you never fail to amaze me and I’m so proud of each and every one of you.
Finally, I’d like to thank YOU, the reader. Writing really
wouldn’t be as pleasurable without each and every one of you, whether I know you or not, you make my dreams a reality. It makes me proud to admit I’m a member of THE Book Club, UK Crime Book Club, Crime Book Club, North East Authors and Readers and Crime Fiction Addict on Facebook – these clubs make speaking to readers simple and I thoroughly enjoy the interaction, banter, and suggestions for books to read, characters and plots to write. I look forward to meeting more of you at the various events planned in the near future.
