The Revenge Game

Ryan now stood beside him. “Seriously, you did good, guy.”
“I’m sorry Grant can’t feel that way.”
“He was burned,” Ryan said. “He’ll come around.”
“I hope so,” he said. “I’d like to see the two of you as happy as I am.”
“Hey, I’m happy.” Ryan lifted his glass in a toast. “I’ve got a great job. Wine, women, and song. What’s not to love?
Ryan didn’t understand the kind of joy settling down with the person you love could bring. How could he? He’d never experienced it. As for Grant, he’d loved and lost, but he’d find his way back. It was going to be great fun to watch both of them fall. Because now that Adam knew how great the ultimate prize was, he was going to encourage his friends to find the same happiness. They deserved it.
But for now, he’d been separated from his wife for way too long. After handing Ryan his drink, he crossed the dance floor and tapped Baxter on the shoulder. “My turn.”
If Baxter had been Nicole’s father, Adam might have let him have the entire dance. On the other hand, if he’d been Maurice Westmore, this wedding wouldn’t have taken place.
Then again, one way or another, he and Nicole would have found their way back to each other. The universe had made them to be happy in love. Nothing could have kept them apart forever.
She stepped into his arms, and he guided them around the floor. Waltzing wasn’t all that hard, and he’d practiced enough to do a good job. He swirled her and then leaned her over his arm to dip her. When she came back up in time to the music, the crowd applauded.
“Why, sir, you’ve swept me off my feet,” she said.
“I always want to keep you off-balance.” A little mystery and surprise were good for a marriage, no? And he had a little surprise planned for tonight that involved a certain set of silk scarves. He’d already let her tie him up. Turnabout was only fair play, right?
He couldn’t help but smile again. His face felt like it was breaking with all the smiling.
“Happy?”
“Beside myself.” She gazed up at him with an expression so full of love his heart almost stopped beating. Her eyes might have been a little misty, but then, he’d felt the threat of tears a few times, too. Only masculine pride had kept him from indulging.
He bent his face close to her ear. “The night’s not over.”
She blushed. She’d do more than that before he finished with her. “There’s still dinner.”
“And lots of toasts, I imagine,” he said.
“Lots and lots of them.”
“I guess by the time we’re finally alone, I’ll be really horny,” he said.
She glanced up at him from beneath her lashes. “Is that a threat?”
“It’s a promise.”
“Bring it on.”
