Alexis took a deep breath and turned back to the locker room. Its door was ajar and she grinned. “I know you all were listening. At least come out and help me with these boxes.” Opening the door, the gaggle of women began to talk all at once.
“Are you sure it’s only temporary?”
“How bad are the swimsuits?”
“The guys have to wear them too? That’s a bonus…”
“Ooo donuts!”
They pressed around her and began pulling the suits from the box. There were neatly slimming one-pieces, cutely conservative sun suits, sporty tankinis and even a sweetly prim maternity suit.
Finally they all had one and they turned to look at Alexis. An unspoken question hovered in the air until Jessica finally gave it voice. “You’re wearing one too, right?” There was an awkward pause. Two of the girls narrowed their eyes at Alexis. She knew they had heard what Nathan said.
“Yes… I guess.” She couldn't think of a way out of it. She thought longingly of her black full coverage swim dress that lay unused in the bottom drawer of her bedroom closet. Then she looked in the file box to see what was left. One candy pink string bikini. Alexis laughed. “Well, I obviously can’t wear this!”
The girls all started talking at once again.
“Then I’m not wearing this either!”
“We ought to quit right now!”
Alexis was dazed by the angry hubbub. She had to do something. Her staff couldn't afford to quit! Brittany had kids to take care of, Jessica interviewed so badly she’d never find a new job, and who knows what would happen to her if her whole staff quit, regardless of who her brother was.
"Wait, Okay… OKAY! I'll be wearing a swimsuit too,” she said resignedly. “It’s just that this is a size too small. Will anyone trade with me?” She held up the bundle of pink strings. Everyone fell silent again.
The sea of faces in front of her where an ocean of pursed lips and raised eyebrows that seemed to say – are you kidding me? Sympathy for management was low today. Defeated, Alexis slunk off to her office to change in private. She shut the door and closed the little venetian blinds that hung on her office windows even though they only faced inwards towards the service area hallway. It was silly, she realized, since everyone would see her near naked soon enough.
She slowly undid her blouse buttons and then arched her back so that she could unhook her bra. The release of pressure had her automatically exhaling in relief. Then it was untangling herself from straps, sleeves, her belt, another hook, pulling down the zipper and wriggling out of her pants. She laid her clothes across the desk chair and gave a shiver of awareness at being fully naked in her office. Holding the bikini up in front of her she marveled at how small it was. Even her favorite lingerie covered more skin than this swimsuit would!
She stepped into the bottoms. The thin pink fabric cupped her pussy in a shockingly intimate manner and she gulped as she inspected the string ties on either side. They looked stretched to the limit – as if one small tug would send the entire suit slingshotting into the next room.
She bit her lip and struggled into the triangle top, each swatch of fabric clinging to her breasts like it had been painted on. Alexis thought despairingly that she would have been more modestly covered if she were wearing the donuts she’d bought today!
Her hands shaking, she clipped her name tag to the beleaguered string tie above her left breast. How could she possibly go out like this? She slipped on her no-nonsense heels and gave a hysteric laugh at the contrast between her footwear and swimwear.
Peeking out into the hallway to ensure it was empty, she scurried out of her office and back to the staff locker room. Maybe if the other girls saw her situation they would take pity on her and trade swimsuits. Alexis burst into the locker room, her cheeks blazing an embarrassed shade of pink that almost matched the color of her ridiculous bikini.
The ladies of housekeeping as well as the wait and front-of-house staff were all still chattering away and putting things in their lockers. Until they saw Alexis. Gasps and one low whistle filled the room until they saw Alexis’ lip begin to quiver. Then Jessica spoke up.
“Damn, mami! Where you been keeping all that?” The ladies burst into laughter, instantly breaking the tension. Soon they all went back to stuffing their lockers with their street clothes and talking amongst themselves about the new rules.
Immediately, Alexis began to beg in vain for anyone to trade with her.
“Don’t worry, boss. At least you don’t have to scrub the floors in that outfit!” A cheeky girl from housekeeping shouted. The comment was followed by good natured guffawing as the women all filed out, leaving her alone with Cassandra.
Cassandra folded things neatly into a duffle bag. “Why don’t you just hide in your office today? Have Cora take over for you.”
“I can’t!” wailed Alexis. “Today is the opening day of the Travel Agents convention. If I don’t get down there and do the welcome speech they'll all give us negative marks for hospitality. And Cora can’t do it! You know she’d just snap her gum through the whole thing. Making a good impression is critical for next season’s business.” With a heavy sigh, Alexis knew what she had to do. She was going to open that convention…
