Trouble in Paradise

  ‘What about your heart?’

‘I gave it to you in London.’

A crash from the veranda, a flurry of wings took them through the door. The cage was lying on its side, the door open and Jill was perched on a nearby branch with Jack running his beak through her ruffled feathers.

‘If only it was that easy for people.’ No stupid pride, no need to hide your feelings in case you were hurt.

  ‘It is, Maddy.’

She turned to Griff and he was looking down at her, still waiting for her answer and she knew he was right. Griff had bared his heart to her, all it took was the courage to make that leap of faith. To believe that someone would want her for herself.

‘I love you, Griff,’ she said. ‘I came back because I want to be with you. I’m not even sure that I’m pregnant. I didn’t want to take a test, confuse my feelings...’

He seemed to be a little closer. ‘If that’s the only thing that’s worrying you, my love, we could make absolutely certain.’

‘Tell the boatman to go, Griff,’ she said softly.

‘What boatman?’ She turned to look at the jetty, but the launch was already disappearing into the distance.

‘You knew…’ He kinked an eyebrow at her and smiling, she leaned into him, her cheek against his heart as he said, ‘Welcome to Paradise, my love.’
