  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

A special thank you to Jonathan Myerson for his guidance, tutelage, and support.

Thank you to Joshua Ferris and Lucy Caldwell for their challenge and mentorship. Thanks to my fellow writers at City University, London, for their constructive criticism and their camaraderie—Giles Hazelgrove, Helen Donohoe, Harkiran Dhindsa, Josh Du Sautoy, Kirsten Disley and Caroline Dean. Thanks to Mike Wozniak for being my first reader.

A big thank you to David Godwin, Heather Godwin, and the rest of the wonderful team at DGA—Amy Mitchell, Lisette Verhagen, and Philippa Sitters—for believing in the book and finding it a home.

Thank you to my brilliant editors, Ravi Mirchandani and George Witte, to their assistants, Ansa Khan Khattak and Sara Thwaite, and to the rest of the fantastic staff at Picador and St. Martin’s Press.

Thank you to Lt. Col. Ron Coulter, USMC (Ret.), and Dr. Rik Thomas for being so generous with their time in helping me with my research; any inaccuracies are mine alone.

I am also indebted to the following authors and books: Robert Peter Thompson, Everything Happened In Vietnam: The Year of the Rat; Ron Kovic, Born on the Fourth of July; George Lepre, Fragging: Why U.S. Soldiers Assaulted Their Officers in Vietnam; Cecil Barr Currey, Long Binh Jail: An Oral History of Vietnam’s Notorious U.S. Military Prison; Michael Herr, Dispatches; Lieutenant Colonel Gary D. Solis, Marines and Military Law in Vietnam: Trial By Fire; Randy E. M. Foster and Peter Dennis, Vietnam Firebases 1965-73: American and Australian Forces; Ronald J. Glasser, M.D., 365 Days; and Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam, ed. Bernard Edelman.

A huge thank you to my parents, Judith and Ted Wozniak, for coming every week without fail to look after my two small children while I disappeared to write. Thanks to Lucy Wozniak, Ed Fidoe, Anandi Peiris, Yaso Walker, Alice Moss and Darren Janger for cheering me on.

And thank you to my husband, Phil Kohler, for his unflagging encouragement and enthusiasm, and for giving me the space and time to pursue a dream.
