  “I could betray every secret she has.” I reminded him, feeling blood trickling down my jaw, “Even if she wasn’t a spiteful bitch, she’d try to stop me.”

  Jonas fell silent, and then he nodded. We looked around at the beautiful palace, at the shining lake, and at my blood on the floor. I wiped my cheek on my sleeve and watched as the golden thread disappeared under the spreading crimson stain.

  My husband pressed his hand to my stomach and rested his forehead against my own. We stayed like that until our breathing slowed and the world became as peaceful as we needed it to be. I think, in those few moments, that we said more to one another than a lifetime of marriage could have allowed.

  Jonas took my hand. We did not look back.
