The Stone Wall

by Beverly Lewis

From the research to the production of this novel, there are numerous wonderful people to thank—the fine folk at the Mennonite Information Center; Annie Jean Smucker at Harmony Hollow Retreat in Quarryville; Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center on Hartman Station Road in Lancaster County; Dr. Max Nevarez and Dr. Kimberly Wagner, for their wealth of knowledge on dementia and Alzheimer’s; the Esbenshade Turkey Farm in Ronks; Rachel Stoltzfus’s Farmhouse Memories; John Stevens’s watercolor art gallery in Nolt’s Mill; Lovina Eicher’s latest cookbook, Amish Family Recipes; and the Amish contacts and friends who answered my many questions and read sections of the manuscript. And thanks, as well, to my sister, Barbara, for the unique inspiration behind Sadie Flaud’s “Amish Cheer” encouragement cards.

I’m ever thankful to David Horton and his exceptional editorial team, including Rochelle Glöege and Elisa Tally. My friends in marketing also deserve a shout-out—especially Steve Oates, Noelle Chew, and Amy Green, as well as Dan Thornberg and Paul Higdon for my book covers. Bravo to all!

My husband, Dave, also played a large part, especially when I succumbed to flu during the revision process last winter. Dave is not only a great first editor, but he makes wonderful soft-boiled eggs and delicious chicken soup, too!

For the sake of this story’s timeframe, the Landis Valley Village and Farm Harvest Days Festival remained open until after sundown. In reality, however, it closes at five o’clock. Also, the actual Mennonite Information Center would not pair up a woman with a male tour guide, no matter how experienced.

Finally, I offer a heart full of gratitude to you, my dear reader-friend . . . and to our heavenly Father, constant Guide and Provider, and our Peace. Soli Deo Gloria!

Beverly Lewis, born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is the New York Times bestselling author of more than one hundred books. Her stories have been published in twelve languages worldwide. A keen interest in her mother’s Plain heritage has inspired Beverly to write many Amish-related novels, beginning with The Shunning, which has sold more than one million copies and is an Original Hallmark Channel movie. In 2007 The Brethren was honored with a Christy Award.

Beverly has been interviewed by both national and international media, including Time magazine, the Associated Press, and the BBC. She lives with her husband, David, in Colorado.
