  “Stay right beside me and keep low to the ground,” I instructed. As I neared the corner, I hesitated, poking my head out and scanning. There was no activity at this time of night and little noise, even though the main street was close. I squeezed her hand, eyeing the truck. “Come on.”

  “I don’t like this,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. However, she didn’t fight as I nearly dragged her through the parking lot, weaving through cars, stopping every few seconds to listen for any signs of a visitor. Taking a deep breath, I decided to sprint the rest of the way. We made it within feet of the passenger door and only then did I press the keyless lock, almost relieved at the slight chirping as the lights flashed.

  “No. No! God, no,” Summer whimpered.

  As Summer struggled, trying to get out of my hold, I jerked my head in the direction of the light.

  “Jonathan,” I hissed under my breath. When he smiled and walked closer, I crowded in front of her, keeping my gun positioned in both hands. The way the light accentuated his expression reminded me of the Devil reincarnated. There was nothing but blackness in his eyes.

  “My darling stepdaughter. Did you really think I’d leave the country without taking you with me?” Jonathan sneered as he walked closer, his grin as if he didn’t have a care in the world. His hands were at his sides, no weapon that I could see, but I knew better. “You really aren’t the brightest little girl, are you? I’ve had your phone pinged for some time now. I knew exactly what you were doing and who you were doing it with. The fact you returned to the place I found your useless mother was a gift to me.” He glared at me, his smirk full of ire.

  “You’re a fucking bastard. I will kill you.” Her words were laced with a calm that was far more terrifying than his.

  Jonathan stopped walking, his smile widening. “If you don’t want this friend of yours to get hurt, I suggest you come with me.”

  “Not going to happen,” I answered for her.

  Jonathan cocked his head. “I guess we’re going to have to see about that.”

  A sniper friend of mine shared his secret for success many years ago in that you could always tell the split second before a shooter was prepared to fire by the gleam in his eye.

  I refused to take any chances. As the headlights dimmed, shutting off on the timer, I’d been able to see that very flash. My training still infused in every aspect of my mind, I pushed Summer down and dropped to my knees.

  Bam!

  Bam!

  “Okay, I still don’t necessarily get the entire story,” Riley said as he crossed his arms, looking over the railing at the work down below.

  The last week had been one entire blur of activity but getting back on the rig had been the best thing to do.

  At least for my anger.

  Thank God we were finally pumping real oil. I glared at the bright sun, squinting only after a few seconds. “Summer’s mother set up a trust fund that couldn’t be accessed until Summer was married or reached the age of twenty-five. Since Holmes Enterprises’ legitimate businesses had been under scrutiny and his stocks were dropping in value, Jonathan determined that the best thing to do was to marry her off. The groom was under Jonathan’s thumb.”

  “That’s why he at least sent her to school and pretended to care. So now, Summer gets married and loses control of her money all in one swoop. Brilliant if you ask me.”

  I gave Riley a nasty glare as I thought about how close we’d both come to dying. Unfortunately, Summer’s fake will would have left everything to her baby sister, thereby leaving Jonathan in charge. It became more cost effective to have his stepdaughter out of the way. “Yeah, brilliant all right except that Summer wanted nothing to do with this Christian dude. So don’t forget, Jonathan is a monster.”

  “And you’re her protector.” Riley grinned.

  The monster would stand trial for several horrific charges. I’d made a choice to allow him to live, one I hoped I wouldn’t regret.

  “Goddamn it! How many times do I have to tell you that you can’t weld steel that way, not around oil?”

  The voice floated up between us and Riley rolled his eyes.

  “Incidentally, Summer was right about Mike. What he’d done could have caused a chain reaction of events that would have shut down the rig,” Riley stated. “He’s working on the other side of the rig and out of harm’s way.”

  All I could do was shake my head. For one beautiful heiress, the baby girl of the brand spanking new CEO of Holmes Enterprises, she would forever have a caustic mouth on her.

  Riley glanced over the railing. “Of course, she just might run all the rest of the crew off with that mouth of hers.”

  “Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m thinking. I’ll take care of it.” I shimmied down the ladders, moving from deck to deck until I was within two feet from her. “Ms. Carter. I think that’s enough.”

  “That’s Ms. Holmes, Master Sergeant Jack Stone and this idiot has no clue what he’s doing,” Summer countered.

  If I didn’t know better, I’d say she was taunting me.

  Well, one way or the other, she was going to learn her place as my baby girl once and for all. Without hesitation, I took two giant steps, lifting and tossing her over my shoulder. “You’re coming with me, Ms. Alexandra Summer Holmes so I can teach you some manners.”

  As I walked away, the other riggers cheering, I heard her muffled voice and couldn’t help but smile.

  “Yes, Daddy.”
