Faithless #3: A Tainted Love Serial
Page 7
“We should go home soon.” Luke sighs. “Mom and Dad are making lasagna.”
Noah pops his head up and smirks. “It feels like it’s been a century since I’ve had their lasagna.”
“And it’s just as good as it’s always been,” I say.
“Better than ever,” Luke adds.
“Should we go see them?” Noah asks.
“Just give me another minute,” I say and rest my head back on his shoulder.
I know many things that I didn’t know then, but there’s still one simple question I couldn’t answer—what is home? I wouldn’t pretend to know. I’m not exactly an authority on the matter. All I know is what I feel, and I feel at peace. I’ve felt that way since I arrived. In the space between my time on Earth and now, there’s been a piece of the puzzle missing, and that piece has returned.
I spent my entire life searching for peace, but always found a way to turn my back on it. It was almost always my own failure—my own doing. It was a game that I was always losing. But I understand it now. It was always there in the background, waiting patiently for me, but I couldn’t stay still long enough. I ran and ran and ran, unaware that, while I was running away from the pain, I was also running away from happiness.
I could spend the rest of eternity here in this field, staring at this sky. And I have faith again. Faith in love. Faith in this. Faith in Noah, Luke, and I—my perfect portrait of ‘trinity.’
Everything fits.
Nothing hurts.
More than I ever did before, I understand love.
It’s the one thing nothing can ever steal from you.
Not even death.
