“You said we were in this together Congo. But you’re leaving me out like you’re by yourself. You don’t talk to me the way you used to…down for the come up? Yeah right. Let me go,” Honey snatched her arms away. “Go ahead leave. I don’t care. If you wanna do this by yourself then go right ahead. I don’t even care no more.” Honey got up from the couch and tried to walk past him but he wouldn’t let her. He held onto her arm tightly and pulled her back to his chest.
“I just want to protect you.” He whispered in her ear as if they weren’t the only two in their home.
“From what Congo? Just tell me what’s going on?” Honey was asking but she was a little nervous to find out. What did she need protecting from?
Congo pulled her into his arms and held her close. He sniffed around her neck and kissed her cheek, then her shoulder. “I’m tired of sitting around the house like a bitch, I’m a man and I’m used to getting money by any means. I’ve been trying to keep yo ass away from this because you act like you don’t understand where I be coming from when I say I’m not about to let a woman take care of me,” Congo paused and kissed her shoulder again. He held her tightly against him. “I’ve connected with a few of my old friends. When I leave here at night, I’m going to meetings. Looking for connects and places to set up shop. Checking competition and shit like that.”
Honey listened and couldn’t believe what she was hearing. All this time she’d been worried about him cheating and all he was really doing was getting his hands back dirty with the dope game. In a way that was a sigh of relief. She could handle dating a dope boy, she just couldn’t handle Congo giving away her love.
“Honey, say something.”
“I should slap you. You could have told me that.”
Congo turned her around to face him. “I know you aint feeling that shit like that. I didn’t want to stress you with it.”
“So you thought letting me think you were cheating would be an easier pill to swallow? I feel like slapping you.”
“You the one always hollin’ bout you don’t date drug dealers, and your love aint meant for a thug and shit. What else was I supposed to think?”
Honey slid from his grasp and took a seat on the couch. He sat down across from her. He looked at her waiting for her to say something.
“So how is all this going?”
“I’m having a hard time finding a connect. The one I used to deal with before got knocked around the same time Jabar got killed. Everything else is in line. Niggas ready to eat, the eager as hell for me to come back.”
Honey nodded as she tried to process all of this. She respected Congo and for as long as she’d known him he’d been about making his money and taking care of home so she couldn’t be mad at him. It wasn’t like he’d had much luck with the job search. Honey sat lost in deep thought about what it might be like to a BOSS’S wife. She’d lived a low key life for as far back as she could remember, was all that about to change? Furthermore could she handle the change?
“Tell me what’s on your mind.”
“Am I ready for this?”
“I been asking myself the same shit but I don’t see no other way Honey. Once I find me a connect I can get shit going we’ll be able to see what the streets talking about. What else your uncle say? He aint say what he heard?”
Honey shook her head. “All he said was he been hearing some things about you and to calm your young ass down because you have in house…” Honey’s voice trailed off as her mind began to put things together faster than she was ready to process it.
Honey jumped from the chair and ran past Congo and into their bedroom to grab her uncle’s letter. She was coming back around the corner when she slammed into his chest.
“What you run off like that for? You good?”
Honey shook her head from side to side continuously as her she mumbled things to herself. She was acting too crazy for Congo’s liking so he grabbed her by both of her arms and shook her lightly.
“Honey, what the fuck is wrong with you?”
Honey looked at him and held the letter up to his face. “I’m your connect,”
Congo’s face displayed his confusion so Honey handed him the letter. He read it silently to himself before looking back at her. He was smiling as he kissed her mouth hard. He slid his tongue in her mouth and everything. When he pulled away he pecked her lips once more.
“Honey, this shit is crazy. If your uncle is saying what I think he is, my problems are over with. A nigga is about to be paid again.”
Honey wanted to share in his excitement, she really did she just didn’t know how she felt about it yet. She already knew if her uncle and Congo hooked up, the streets was about to be lit. Before everything went left in her life, her mother and uncle had the hood on lock. The amount of dope the supplied was massive. They had everybody on their payroll. Honey was young but she remembered. That’s half the reason they were in jail right now. The two cops they paid to keep quiet turned out to be undercover narks and had plans of turning them in, but never got the chance. Once her mother found out from another one of her undercover sources. She and her uncle offed the cops. Had one of the cops they’d killed never had his camera on his uniform on, they would still be free. Sadly that wasn’t the case. They mini camera had caught everything on tape and now they were never getting out of prison. That didn’t mean they were stuck though. They still had major reach when it came to the drug game.
“Honey you good?” Congo shook her again bringing her back from her thoughts.
“Yeah, I’m straight.”
“The streets thought I was a force to be reckoned with back then, wait until they see me now.” He rubbed his hands together as he smiled and nodded.
“What’s so different now?” Honey was confused.
“This time I’ve got you. Ready to run the streets with me?” Congo grabbed her hand.
It took her a minute but that smile he loved to see plastered across Honey’s face appeared. “I’m ready.”
“Down until the come up?” He raised his eyebrows
Honey kissed his lips.
“Down until the come up.”
Congo looked at Honey and nodded his head in reassurance. She was it. The missing piece to his puzzle. As long as she was on board, then he knew he could do it. He just hoped the city was ready for the King of the streets to return, but this time, with his Queen.
