“Are you scared?” she asked. “I would be if I were you. The Unseelie can be cruel people, but I’m sure you’ll be fine for a while, at least until they don’t need you anymore.”
Behind her, she heard the sound of a body hitting the ground and she hoped that Portentia hadn’t heard it, but the woman was still rambling on, trying to scare her. Hoping to keep her attention, Sarah willed herself to cry, letting her eyes fill with tears that spilled down her cheeks, and made the witch cackle with enjoyment.
“Here’s how this is going to work,” she said, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. “When Miranda takes that spell off, you are going to stand up like a good little girl and let the overlords see what they’re bidding on. Until then, you just relax.”
Sarah watched, her heart soaring as Reese stepped out of the trees, followed by everyone else, Darby glowing slightly in the dark night. “No, Portentia, I don’t think that’s what is going to happen,” he said, his hands on his hips, his face a mask of anger and rage. “What’s going to happen is that you’re going to hand Sarah back over to me.”
Portentia turned, a shriek spilling out of her mouth, saw them, then backed a couple of steps away. She lifted her hand in the air and snapped her fingers. “Do your jobs and protect me, you idiots,” she screamed.
“They’re all gone, Mamma,” Miranda said, cringing at her mother’s scream of rage.
When Portentia turned back to Reese, she raised her hands in the air. “Well, no matter,” she said. “You and your little band of misfits are no match for me.”
“Not even if they have a Pixie on their side?” Sarah asked, getting to her feet.
Reese cried out her name at the same time Portentia screamed, “Kill her.”
She turned and faced the girl, who was looking at the knife in her hand, then reached out and took it. “You didn’t want to use this anyway,” she said.
Portentia exploded, a shriek coming out of her mouth that stirred the trees around them. “You are a total waste,” she screamed at Miranda. “Use your magic; kill her.”
Miranda shook her head. “No, Mother, I’m not going to,” she said, then walked around behind Reese.
The fire ball that exploded from Portentia’s hand slammed into Reese’s chest and sent him flying through the air. He landed in a heap on the forest floor, and Sarah felt her world tip again as she watched him lay motionless. This time, it was her scream that filled the night, and when Portentia turned to face her, the evil on her face made her understand what she needed to do.
It all hit her at once, a deep knowledge that this was what she’d been born to do, but for a second, she wasn’t sure she was brave enough. One look at Reese crumpled on the ground was all it took, and before Portentia could raise her hand again, she envisioned the witch’s death. Saw the vessels in her brain bursting, her heart shrinking, and the last of her breath evaporating in her lungs.
Portentia grabbed her head, then put her hand on her chest. “What’s happening?” she asked, sinking to her knees. “Help me.”
Sarah knew that she should have been horrified at what she’d done, but she ran past Portentia and collapsed next to Reese. She gathered him into her arms and hugged him to her. “Don’t leave me, Reese,” she pleaded over and over. “I love you and I never got to tell you that.”
The tears were streaming down her cheeks and dripping onto his face, but she didn’t care; her heart was broken, and she knew that her life would never be the same. But then Reese took a huge breath and opened his eyes. “You’re getting me all wet,” he said.
Sarah was so shocked, she stopped breathing for second, then drew in a huge breath and began to sob, her face buried in his chest. He let her cry, stroking her back until the sobs eased and she looked up at him.
“I thought you were dead,” she said, wiping her face with the back of her hand, a shaky smile spreading across her face.
He reached a shaking hand up and cupped her face. “I thought the same thing about you,” he said. “Now, what was that you said to me a few minutes ago?”
“I said that I love you, Reese,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “I never thought I’d love anyone as much as I love you, and when I thought you were gone, well, I wanted to die too.”
Reese’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m glad you didn’t. I don’t know what I would have done without you. I love you, Sarah; you’ve filled a place inside my soul that I never knew was empty, but now with you in my life, I feel complete. Promise me that you’ll never leave me.”
“That’s an easy promise to make, Reese. I can’t think of anything I’d like better than to spend the rest of my life loving you,” she said.
