“Should I? Her father?” Jack said with a snort.

“No. I’m her guardian.” Jack glances at Haley and she shakes her head up and down acknowledging Hunter.

“But what does that mean? Do you know what I am?” Jack asked with confidence.

“The question is do you know what I am? Let me keep you from guessing,” Hunter said watching at Jack. “You’re a young yearling werewolf who was born and raised in a city. You have been hiding all your life. And you think you can challenge me. You don’t know what I am because you have never met your own kind. I’m a werewolf, too. You can’t recognize your own because all you see are humans. You’ve lost your instincts for seeing, hearing, and smelling. You have never seen a werewolf like me. Trust me, you don’t want to compete with me for this human.” Haley looked at Jack waiting for him to do something.

She wanted Jack to wipe that smile off Hunter’s arrogant face.

Jack studied Hunter a second and then dropped Haley’s hand and pushed her out of the way. He began shifting. It was his first time and it was painful and disorganized.

It took Hunter a second to shift, and he stood before Jack as a blue eyed white wolf growling and snarling with his matured teeth before Jack could complete his transformation.

“Do you really want to die now and for her? A girl you’ve never fucked?” Jack glanced over at Haley standing glaring at Hunter, hoping Jack would at least try and teach Hunter’s cocky ass a lesson, but Jack cowered like the beta he is, and looked on at Haley, then turned with his clothes torn and walked out of the door.

“You bastard,” Haley shouted at Hunter out of frustration, and then she picked up a vase and threw it at his chest. It bounced off, and fell to the floor and shattered all over the silk oval rug.

Hunter stood before her naked. She couldn’t keep her eyes off of his supremely handsome muscular body, which made her angrier. He didn’t want her and he didn’t want anyone else to have her.

“I can’t date anyone. You don’t want me except to fuck me,” Haley said. Hunter leaned back surprised at the bitterness coming from Haley’s mouth. “And you won’t let me find someone who does want me.”

“He wanted you for one thing and that was to fuck you.”

“How do you know? And since when is that a bad thing.”

“Moon Tide is approaching and it’s mating season.”

“So you’re saving me for you? You want to make sure you have me available because Katie is gone on her honeymoon with your brother, and I’m the only human in San Francisco you can fuck.” Haley looked at Hunter and walked passed him.

“Where are you going?” Hunter questioned, and grabbed her wrist.

“I’m leaving here. I don’t want to be with you are around you. You will just have to find someone else to mate with, but in your case to fuck.” Hunter walked behind her and grabbed for her back pack. He pulled it from her and dropped it on the marble floor.

“What do you want?” Haley said leaning pass Hunter to retrieve her belongings. He wrapped his arms around her. “Let me go. If you don’t, I will scream.”

“Scream all you want. This apartment is sound proof.”

Haley tried moving and Hunter held her so tight that she was up against his hard body. She felt him rise and his manhood rest hard against her stomach.

“Is this your intentions to keep me hostage here until Moon Tide, and then satisfy yourself. It’s not going to happen if I have anything to do with it,” Haley said.

“I can’t let you go,” his voice softened. “That lion shifter is after you, and he has threatened my family, and the whole shifter population in Samsaville.”

“I don’t believe you.” Hunter loosened his grip on Haley. “Good, I can breathe now. And I still don’t believe anything you say,” she said.

“Have I ever lied to you, Haley?” She batted her eyes at him, bit her lip, and looked up into his eyes.

She had to admit that he never lied to her. He never said that he would marry her. He never said to her that he no longer loved Katie either. She knew he was still in love with Katie when she slept with him for the first time. She could have said no. He didn’t force her. She gave herself to him eagerly and happily.

Shaking her head she admitted that he never lied to her. “That doesn’t change anything, now. I don’t want to be with you any longer.”

“You will have to be with me, and we will have to leave here.”

“I’m not going with you. I can’t stand you one more day.” Haley’s voice weak and unsure.

Hunter picked her up in his arms and leaned in and kissed her. It was warm and caring. His lips brushed hers. It wasn’t a kiss she had before. It was a caring kiss. The kind you give to your first love. It was a passionate kiss. It was a sexual kiss when he placed his tongue gently into her open mouth, and he breathed into it.

Her body ached for his affection.

Carrying Haley in his arms, he placed her on the bed and she watched up at him. “What now?” Hunter didn’t say a word. He didn’t tell Haley it was the time of the Moon Tide and his desire was in overload. She didn’t tell Hunter that she too had been sexually awakened at this time of the moon. She lay still as he disrobed her.

“Now, take a shower, and take the smell of that werewolf off you,” Hunter said to her.

“Good. As long as his smell is on me, then you can’t have me.”

  “Is that what you want?”

  “Yes and no,” Haley said.

He picked her up from the bed with her turning and twisting in his arms, Hunter carried her to the restroom. He open the door with one hand and turned on the shower with the other. She stepped down and let the water run over her. He handed her shower gel and closed the door. Hunter walked across the aisle and strode into the second shower.

When he thought she had enough time to wash away the stench of the young werewolf, he opened the door, and handed her a towel.

“I’ve had time to think and I don’t want you. Ever. As soon as I am twenty one, I want all my money. I’m going to go away,” Haley said staring Hunter in the eyes.

“You are going away, and I’m taking you.”

“You can’t watch me all the time.”

“What about if I marry you.”

“Don’t do me any favors. I don’t want a werewolf who needs to satisfy his hunger because the moon is full or the tide is high. I want a man that wants me and I have a right to have a man. I’m done with werewolves or any other kind of shifters. I can’t tell if they are men or beasts.”

  “I am a man.”

“No you’re not. You’re a werewolf and I’ve had enough of them.” Hunter felt anger coming on. He grabbed her and slung her over his shoulder and dropped her on the bed. He lay across her and with his warm lips and long tongue he caressed her waiting nipples. Then he raised his head looking her in the eyes and she saw a heart rendering seductive gaze.

He dropped his tongue into her mouth as far as it could go. She moaned and thrashed about wanting him, but not wanting him at the same time.

“See you do want me. You need me as much as I need you,” he said. Haley bit his shoulder and then pulled away from him.

“I don’t want that,” she said.

“Maybe you want this.” Hunter held her arms as his warm tongue slid over her nipples and he began to suck them. His eyes watching at her as she squirm in the bed. Her mouth open and she’s whispering in a breathless moan, “Hunter. Hunter.”

“Do you want that?” he said looking in her eyes. He felt between her legs stoking a gentle fire inside her. Haley ached begging for him to complete what he started. Hunter guided his manhood into her small opening. When it pierced through, her legs weakened from the hardness of his flesh entering her.

She leaned forward and kissed him sending shivers through Hunter.

“Oh,” she cried into his chest and he fell deeper into her and her moans became more often. She wrapped her hands around his neck and they became one that night of
the Moon Tide.

Haley woke the next morning enclosed tightly in Hunter’s arms. Her legs surrounded by his.

“I didn’t know we were asleep that long. I have to speak to my father and we have to leave here.”

“Where are we going to go?”

“I haven’t decided yet, but it has to be far away from Samsaville. And far enough where the lion shifters can’t find us.”

“I have to call my father and warn him first,” Hunter said. He reached for the house phone. “Damn. He’s out of range.”

He called another number. This had to be said. Hunter walked around the room his mind wandering out past the Golden Gate Bridge down the highway to Samsaville and to the ranch. This time he got Lycell on the phone.

  “Uncle.”

“Where the fuck have you been? You haven’t called and your mother is worried about you. She said something about you looking for Haley and something about lion shifters.”

  “I found Haley.”

“Fucking good new, but why haven’t you brought her to school, and gotten back here? Your father is off taking care of council business. Adrienne caught me just in time otherwise I would be with him. That fucking brother of yours have created a mess around here, and I have to deal with six teenage werewolves.” Lycell was never a patient werewolf and he appears overwhelmed with his new job as a father.

“I didn’t know it would be this difficult dealing with six werewolves like me.”

Hunter interrupted him, “I can’t talk long. I called because I have to warn you about that lion shifter.”

“What the fuck, Hunter? You have a lion shifter on your ass.”

“It’s not one it could be two or three and they’re going to Samsaville if I don’t hand Haley over to them.”

“What the fuck?” Lycell had been cursing more lately since his pack of sons were reaching the age of yearling.

Hunter remembered that time in his life when he was a teen pup. He remembered his enjoyment of stealing cars and horses, and leaving and getting into all kinds of trouble, like the time the police tried to pull him over, and he led them on a wild chase downtown on Lycell’s stallion.

Devin was getting in trouble too but with girls. Human females were claiming that he was getting them pregnant every other week. But a quick test by Robert proved that he wasn’t the father. The werefemales were claiming that as well until it was revealed to him that they were sterile.

Adrienne cried many nights but especially when Hunter was taken by Bane just when he was reaching the age of a yearling.

“The lion shifter gave me a week to bring Haley to him, or he would come into town and destroy everyone in it.” There was silence. It was because Lycell was thinking. Lycell never backed down from a fight. He liked a good fight. He said it kept the pack ready and prepared.

“I’m taking Haley with me. We’re going to go someplace where we can’t be found.”

“When a lion shifter is after you, there is nowhere you can run, if he wants to find you. I suggest you come back home.”

“I can’t. I have to do what I think is right for the family. It would put your pups and Drayton’s pup in jeopardy. I need time with her before I give her up.”

“My sons are old enough to defend our town. You don’t have to turn her over to him. And there are shifters and humans that are willing to risk their lives to make this place a safe haven for humans and shifters. Besides, those boys of mine need a way to burn off some energy. I taught them well just like Wilder taught you and Devin how to be Alphas and survive as werewolves.”

Hunter had a different experience than Lycell’s pups. His was hard and troubling. He didn’t doubt that they were ready to handle the lion shifters, but he didn’t want to take the chance and yet he couldn’t turn Haley over to him, at least not yet.

After placing the phone down, he watched Haley standing in front of him.

  “I’m ready.”

He pulled up a fresh pair of jeans, put on a new shirt and boots. “You can’t take any clothes with you. Nothing you have worn before. Put everything in a bag and call the laundry and tell them to pick up your things.”

“My panties? They’re new I haven’t wore them.”

“Especially your underwear,” Hunter said. Haley did as Hunter suggested. She was ready to go.

  “What about us?”

“I don’t know. All I know is that I have to keep you safe.”

  “For you?”

“Maybe,” Hunter said. Haley couldn’t read his expression. She wanted him to spell it out just what his intentions were before she set off with him. Are they going to be together or was he just keeping a promise to her father and have the benefits of sex. She didn’t know.

Hunter took Haley by the hand. She gazed up at him in anticipation. “Let’s go.”

  “Where are we going?”

  “Does it matter?”

“No,” she said. As long as I’m with you, I don’t care where we go.”

“I have a boat in the marina. It came with the house I bought. The one we can’t go back to. We can take it out and rest there, go from island to island, or country to country until I decide what to do next.” Haley stared at him when he took her hand to lead her out of the hotel suite. She stopped and turned to look at him.

“We will be together, but you haven’t said what I mean to you. You haven’t said that you want me as a mate and a wife.”

“I can’t talk about this now.” He took her arm but she wouldn’t budge.

“Take me to school. I don’t care where. Somewhere far away from you. I have no plans of being with you any longer. I want to go where I can find me someone to love. Someone who will think that life is not worth living without me.”

Hunter stood before Haley his heart broken by her words. He never knew he could feel the depths of despair, but he did feel it. He felt lost. He was in the wilderness again.

“Please stay with me.” He moved to bring Haley into his arms. “I don’t want you to go,” Hunter said.
