For an injured party, Peter's sister proved strong, throwing herself at Duncan with a wild shriek and forcing him in the other direction, towards an opposite ledge. Utilizing a move he'd learned taking self-defense classes as a child, he hooked a leg behind the girl and, using her own momentum, brought her to the ground with a thud. Her mouth, frozen mid-scream, gaped open and blood oozed from one of her ears. He feared she might be dead, but upon discovering she yet breathed, he realized she was merely unconscious.

Angela lay next to a chimney, in a fetal position, her hand clamped on her throat. He leapt to her side, pulling the lass from the floor and supporting her limp form. He saw a nasty bump forming on her forehead. She appeared to be in shock.

  "Are you all right?"

Her almost imperceptible head movement answered, No.

"Let me have a see," he said softly, peeling her fingers away from the neck wound. "It's hardly bleeding. We'll have a doctor check it out."

Her other hand instinctively inched towards the bruise near her temple.

  "Hurts," she squeaked.

"I know. It looks like a chestnut. I'm afraid you hit your head on something when I shoved you."

"Don't worry, Duncan," she whispered, patting his arm. "I'll tell them I fell down," she added, a faint smile playing across her face as she collapsed in his arms.

Just at that moment, several officers from Police Scotland burst on the scene. The couple hadn’t noticed the sirens or flashing lights reflecting off the neighboring buildings. A medic looked Julia over, and soon, a team carted the unconscious girl into an ambulance. More medical personnel examined Angela, stating she should be taken to hospital due to the lump on her head. Duncan insisted she go, agreeing to speak to detectives from the waiting room.

"They won't let me come with you, but I'll meet you there, Darling," he said, squeezing her hand as they scooted her gurney into the waiting emergency vehicle.

  "Duncan?" she rasped, barely audible.

  "Yes, Darling?"

She closed her eyes as the medics made ready to leave. A grin spread across his face as the ambulance pulled from the curb. Just before the van's back doors had closed, he saw her lips move. He would later swear she mouthed, Want to elope?
