Authors Marlene Wagman-Geller, Lori Oliver-Tierney, Gene Desrochers, Alexa Kingaard, and Mike Murphey were readers of early drafts. They had to muddle through a version of the story that wasn’t quite there yet. Thanks to you five for taking the time to do that, and for your sincere praise.

Lori has been one of my major cheerleaders, which every writer needs whether they admit it or not. There were so many times when I was ready to say sayonara to this project, and Lori’s encouragement and consistently positive attitude kept me moving. I’m grateful for your support and friendship, Lori.

Lori, Gene, Alexa, Mike and I are members of a small but fierce community of authors at Acorn Publishing, LLC. When I joined Acorn with FLYGIRL back in 2018, I had no idea I’d meet so many engaged authors. Thank you Holly Kammier and Jessica Therrien for inviting me once again to work with you and the talented cadre of writers at Acorn. And how do you two come up with those fantastic covers? Two gold medals in cover design from me.

San Diego Writers, Ink., is the cornerstone of the writing community where I live. The six weeks I spent with Judy Reeves in a course based on her essential, “The Writers Book of Days,” led to the first draft of this book. I was then privileged to be a member of two Read & Critique groups through SDWI, proctored by the one and only T. (Tammy) Greenwood, a constant supportive presence in my writing life, and author Mark A. Clements. Mark also performed a developmental edit at a critical transitional time for this manuscript. Thank you, Judy, Tammy and Mark for your advice and counsel.

The rubber meets the road, as it were, when a book-to-be is professionally edited at the story, structure and sentence levels. And for her efforts, I am beyond indebted to my editor Jennifer Silva Redmond. To paraphrase friend and author Eric Peterson, first, she made this book better—then she made it much better.

Hats off to the people who read and loved FLYGIRL, and who were willing to read pre-release versions of ANGEL FLIGHT. Thank you Amy Reder, Mimi Loucks, Theresa Freese, Sherrill Joseph, Robyn Muskat Frank, Karen Kirzner Adler and Mitchell Kardon for your interest in Tris’s journey.

There is one person without whom ANGEL FLIGHT would never have existed in any form, let alone been published. From the last word of FLYGIRL through the crazy compilation that has become this book, my friend Barbara Shaw has provided counsel, critique and encouragement.

Barb read every version of this book, every alternate ending, reviewed every cover draft. She’s evangelized my writing to anyone who would listen. Barb, who knew that a chance meeting on the courts at Balboa Tennis Club would lead to this? Sometimes, I get lucky. Thank you, Barb, for your friendship and tireless contributions to my writing journey.

  Praise for FLYGIRL

Book #1 of The Flygirl Trilogy

  by R. D. Kardon

“Kardon’s narrative is both thoughtful and gripping. She vividly portrays the fine line between respect and familiarity that women in nontraditional roles must walk to do their jobs well in the face of sexual harassment on one hand and antagonistic resistance on the other. Tris is an appealing and relatable character who struggles to keep both her self-respect and her ambition intact while negotiating the slippery morality of the corporate world.” —Kirkus Reviews

“[This] exciting, spirited debut follows a new female pilot as she vies to move up to the captain’s seat . . . This soaring testament to the value of following one’s dreams delivers the goods.” —Publishers Weekly

“Kardon creates a relatable heroine in Tris, a character who, along with her grit and determination to succeed, displays a range of authentic emotions and vulnerabilities . . .[I]interpersonal conflicts and the heroine’s clear aspirations result in a satisfying narrative arc.” —The Booklife Prize

“A wonderful piece of writing with a bit of history and real-world issues laced throughout.” —The Indie Express

“Well written and interesting, [Kardon] tells the truth about those times.” —Texas Book Nook

“R. D. Kardon is such an imaginative and descriptive storyteller.” —On a Reading Bender
