“I like her,” Monique said flatly. “That makes her worth something.”
She heard a grunt from the bedroom, Portia’s voice carried to her, “Oh god, fuck me!”
She smiled. Any second now.
“Nevertheless, she’s mine. Her father must learn the error of his ways.” He wasn’t more than thirty feet away now. Bears had exceptional hearing, almost as good as a wolf could smell. If that held true for him, he would hear any second.
“Oh god, I’m cumming,” Portia screamed form behind the door.
“Oops… too late shaggy, sounds like she’s taken.”
Rage flooded his features. He transformed from man to bear in the breadth of a step. Monique hauled the rifle up, slammed the stock into her shoulder, brought the barrel on target, and fired. The weapon’s massive round kicked her like a mule. The bullet ripped through the bear, blood and sinew splattering the ground behind him.
The other bears roared and charged. Monique held her ground. Exhausted from lack of sleep, and over taxed from her own shifting, she had to face them as a woman. She popped the breach open and dropped another massive shell in. With no time to aim, she fired from the hip. The closest bear dropped when it’s head exploded.
She flung herself back out of the way as a paw swiped the air where she had been. The cabin floor slammed her back and she kicked the door closed with her feet. Wood splintered as the bear crashed his massive paws into it. Teeth the size of her hand dug into the old frame and ripped bits out.
“Johan, protect Kirk!”
Exhausted as she was, she stood no chance against the bear. “Come on Carver, where are you?!” she hissed.
As if to answer her call, the howl of wolves broke the noise of the furious bear. Johan suddenly charged the door. The bear turned to fight behind it and Johan bit deep into his shoulder. Monique reloaded the rifle. She shattered the window to shoot out. The pack was there. And they brought everyone.
She fired again at the closest bear. It roared from the hit. The bears backed away as Carver and Paul circled the cabin. As many bears as there were, there were too many wolves to fight without losing too much.
The leader backed away from the cabin, leaving a trail of blood. When he got to the treeline, he looked back to Monique before disappearing. Exhaustion flooded over her. It was done. Carver was there, in human form holding her up, then Paul.
“Is she okay?” he asked her. She couldn’t help but notice how naked the two men were.
“Yes, but you may not like why,” she said.
Kirk and Portia exited the cabin wrapped in a sheet, a spot of blood on it told her that their plan worked. Monique sunk into Carver’s chest, unable to stay awake any longer.

Monique sighed as she signed the last check for the summer. Winter was upon them now. Snow fell silently outside the window. It always brought a smile to her face. Everyone else feared the snow, feared how it bound them to shelter; for her, she felt like it freed her.
Kirk and Portia were away at her mom’s. She had a lot of explaining to do and the couple needed some time to get to know each other before the wedding. They planned it for the spring, hopefully Portia wouldn’t be showing by then, it made wedding dress shopping a lot easier.
Everything else was back to normal. Paul’s pack and Carver’s would be formalizing a new relationship soon. With the marriage of their children, they had no choice but to become allies. That and because of her. She couldn’t deny how she felt about Paul. It burned in her every second of the day. And it wouldn’t stop until he made her his bitch. At the same time, she loved Carver with all her heart. There had to be a solution, and if the packs were allies, that solution would be easier than not.
She sighed, looking at her bags packed in the corner. It wouldn’t be easy on any of them, but they had to make it work. When Paul left, she would be going with him. At least until Christmas, to see if this fever she felt would pass. If it didn’t, then she would have to schedule her time between Carver and Paul. Things could be worse; one of them could have really bad breath.
With the last check signed, she grabbed a couple of beers out of the cooler. She stopped to change into her bathing suit, which was nothing more than a thong and a see-through wrap. She didn’t feel the need for modesty in her private hot tub.
She stepped outside onto the deck, the hot tub had high walls so that it couldn’t be spied on from the other balconies. She climbed the ladder, beers in one hand. When she reached the top she let out a gasp. Paul was there, and behind him, Carver. Neither man wore a suit.
“What are you two doing here?”
“We felt, if you were interested, maybe we could get spend some time together before you left.”
Monique lifted an eyebrow as the delicious possibilities presented themselves. She slid into the water. Letting her nipples set just above so the cold air made them hard.
“Consider me interested,” she said as she embraced Carver.
