[28] And will he make a covenant with thee? and wilt thou take him for a perpetual servant?
[29] παίξῃ δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ὥσπερ ὀρνέῳ ἢ δήσεις αὐτὸν ὥσπερ στρουθίον παιδίῳ;
[29] And wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child?
[30] ἐνσιτοῦνται δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ ἔθνη, μεριτεύονται δὲ αὐτὸν Φοινίκων γένη;
[30] And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him?
[31] πᾶν δὲ πλωτὸν συνελθὸν οὐ μὴ ἐνέγκωσιν βύρσαν μίαν οὐ ρᾶς αὐτοῦ 13καὶ ἐν πλοίοις ἁλιέων κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ.507
[31] And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither shall they carry his head in fishing-vessels.
[32] ἐπιθήσεις δὲ αὐτῷ χεῖρα μνησθεὶς πόλεμον τὸν γινόμενον ἐν σώματι αὐτοῦ, καὶ μηκέτι γινέσθω.
[32] But thou shalt lay thy hand upon him once, remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more.
CHAPTER 41
[1] οὐχ ἑόρακας αὐτὸν οὐδὲ ἐπὶ τοῖς λεγομένοις τεθαύμακας;
Hast thou not seen him? and hast thou not wondered at the things said of him?
[2] οὐ δέδοικας ὅτι ἡτοίμασταί μοι; τίς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἐμοὶ ἀντιστάς;
[2] Dost thou not fear because preparation has been made by me? for who is there that resists me?
[3] ἢ τίς ἀντιστήσεταί μοι καὶ ὑπομενεῖ, εἰ πᾶσα ἡ ὑπ’ οὐρανὸν ἐμή ἐστιν;
[3] Or who will resist me, and abide, since the whole world under heaven is mine?
[4] 13οὐ σιωπήσομαι δι’ αὐτόν, 13καὶ λόγον δυνάμεως ἐλεήσει τὸν ἴσον αὐτοῦ.507
[4] I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power one shall pity his antagonist.
[5] τίς ἀποκαλύψει πρόσωπον ἐνδύσεως αὐτοῦ; εἰς δὲ πτύξιν θώρακος αὐτοῦ τίς ἂν εἰσέλθοι;
[5] Who will open the face of his garment? and who can enter within the fold of his breastplate?
[6] πύλας προσώπου αὐτοῦ τίς ἀνοίξει; κύκλῳ ὀδόντων αὐτοῦ φόβος.
[6] Who will open the doors of his face? terror is round about his teeth.
[7] τὰ ἔγκατα αὐτοῦ ἀσπίδες χάλκειαι, σύνδεσμος δὲ αὐτοῦ ὥσπερ σμιρίτης λίθος·
[7] His inwards are as brazen plates, and the texture of his skin as a smyrite stone.
[8] 13εἷς τοῦ ἑνὸς κολλῶνται,507 πνεῦμα δὲ οὐ μὴ διέλθῃ αὐτόν·
[8] One part cleaves fast to another, and the air cannot come between them.
[9] 13ἀνὴρ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ προσκολληθήσεται, 13συνέχονται καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποσπασθῶσιν.507
[9] They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and cannot be separated.
[10] ἐν πταρμῷ αὐτοῦ ἐπιφαύσκεται φέγγος, οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ εἶδος ἑωσφόρου.
[10] At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are as the appearance of the morning star.
[11] ἐκ στόματος αὐτοῦ ἐκπορεύονται λαμπάδες καιόμεναι καὶ διαρριπτοῦνται ἐσχάραι πυρός·
[11] Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad.
[12] ἐκ μυκτήρων αὐτοῦ ἐκπορεύεται καπνὸς καμίνου καιομένης πυρὶ ἀνθράκων·
[12] Out of his nostrils proceeds smoke of a furnace burning with fire of coals.
[13] ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἄνθρακες, φλὸξ δὲ ἐκ στόματος αὐτοῦ ἐκπορεύεται.
[13] His breath is as live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.
[14] ἐν δὲ τραχήλῳ αὐτοῦ αὐλίζεται δύναμις, ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ τρέχει ἀπώλεια.
[14] And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs.
[15] σάρκες δὲ σώματος αὐτοῦ κεκόλληνται· 13καταχέει ἐπ’ αὐτόν, οὐ σαλευθήσεται.507
[15] The flesh also of his body is joined together: if one pours violence upon him, he shall not be moved.
[16] ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ πέπηγεν ὡς λίθος, ἕστηκεν δὲ ὥσπερ ἄκμων ἀνήλατος.
[16] His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil.
[17] στραφέντος δὲ αὐτοῦ φόβος θηρίοις τετράποσιν ἐπὶ γῆς ἁλλομένοις.
[17] And when he turns, he is a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth.
[18] ἐὰν συναντήσωσιν αὐτῷ λόγχαι, οὐδὲν μὴ ποιήσωσιν 13δόρυ ἐπηρμένον καὶ θώρακα·507
[18] If spears should come against him, men will effect nothing, either with the spear or the breast-plate.
[19] ἥγηται μὲν γὰρ σίδηρον ἄχυρα, χαλκὸν δὲ ὥσπερ ξύλον σαθρόν·
[19] For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood.
[20] οὐ μὴ τρώσῃ αὐτὸν τόξον χάλκειον, ἥγηται μὲν πετροβόλον χόρτον·
[20] The bow of brass shall not would him, he deems a slinger as grass.
[21] 13ὡς καλάμη ἐλογίσθησαν σφῦραι,507 καταγελᾷ δὲ σεισμοῦ πυρφόρου.
[21] Mauls are counted as stubble; and he laughs to scorn the waving of the firebrand.
[22] ἡ στρωμνὴ αὐτοῦ ὀβελίσκοι ὀξεῖς, πᾶς δὲ χρυσὸς θαλάσσης ὑπ’ αὐτὸν ὥσπερ πηλὸς ἀμύθητος.
[22] His lair is formed of sharp points; and all the gold of the sea under him is an immense quantity of clay.
[23] ἀναζεῖ τὴν ἄβυσσον ὥσπερ χαλκεῖον, ἥγηται δὲ τὴν θάλασσαν ὥσπερ ἐξάλειπτρον,
[23] He makes the deep boil like a brazen caldron; and he regards the sea as a pot of ointment,
[24] τὸν δὲ τάρταρον τῆς ἀβύσσου ὥσπερ αἰχμάλωτον· 13ἐλογίσατο ἄβυσσον εἰς περίπατον.507
[24] and the lowest part of the deep as a captive: he reckons the deep as his range.
[25] οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδὲν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ὅμοιον αὐτῷ πεποιημένον ἐγκαταπαίζεσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀγγέλων μου·
[25] There is nothing upon the earth like to him, formed to be sported with by my angels.
[26] πᾶν ὑψηλὸν ὁρᾷ, αὐτὸς δὲ βασιλεὺς πάντων τῶν ἐν τοῖς ὕδασιν.
[26] He beholds every high thing: and he is king of all that are in the waters.
CHAPTER 42
[1] Ὑπολαβὼν δὲ Ιωβ λέγει τῷ κυρίῳ
[1] Then Job answered and said to the Lord,
[2] Οἶδα ὅτι πάντα δύνασαι, ἀδυνατεῖ δέ σοι οὐθέν.
[2] I know that thou canst do all things, and nothing is impossible with thee.
[3] τίς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ κρύπτων σε βουλήν; φειδόμενος δὲ ῥημάτων καὶ σὲ οἴεται κρύπτειν; τίς δὲ ἀ
ναγγελεῖ μοι ἃ οὐκ ᾔδειν, μεγάλα καὶ θαυμαστὰ ἃ οὐκ ἠπιστάμην;
[3] For who is he that hides counsel from thee? or who keeps back his words, and thinks to hide them from thee? and who will tell me what I knew not, great and wonderful things which I understood not?
[4] ἄκουσον δέ μου, κύριε, ἵνα κἀγὼ λαλήσω· ἐρωτήσω δέ σε, σὺ δέ με δίδαξον.
[4] But hear me, O Lord, that I also may speak: and I will ask thee, and do thou teach me.
[5] ἀκοὴν μὲν ὠτὸς ἤκουόν σου τὸ πρότερον, νυνὶ δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμός μου ἑόρακέν σε·
[5] I have heard the report of thee by the ear before; but now mine eye has seen thee.
[6] διὸ ἐφαύλισα ἐμαυτὸν καὶ ἐτάκην, ἥγημαι δὲ ἐμαυτὸν γῆν καὶ σποδόν.
[6] Wherefore I have counted myself vile, and have fainted: and I esteem myself dust and ashes.
[7] Ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τὸ λαλῆσαι τὸν κύριον πάντα τὰ ῥήμα τα ταῦτα τῷ Ιωβ εἶπεν ὁ κύριος Ελιφας τῷ Θαιμανίτῃ Ἥμαρτες σὺ καὶ οἱ δύο φίλοι σου· οὐ γὰρ ἐλαλήσατε ἐνώπιόν μου ἀληθὲς οὐδὲν ὥσπερ ὁ θεράπων μου Ιωβ.
[7] And it came to pass after the Lord had spoken all these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Thaemanite, Thou hast sinned, and thy two friends: for ye have not said anything true before me, as my servant Job has.
[8] νῦν δὲ λάβετε ἑπτὰ μόσχους καὶ ἑπτὰ κριοὺς καὶ πορεύθητε πρὸς τὸν θεράποντά μου Ιωβ, καὶ ποιήσει κάρπωσιν περὶ ὑμῶν· Ιωβ δὲ ὁ θεράπων μου εὔξεται περὶ ὑμῶν, 13ὅτι εἰ μὴ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ λήμψομαι·507 εἰ μὴ γὰρ δι’ αὐτόν, ἀπώλεσα ἂν ὑμᾶς· οὐ γὰρ ἐλαλήσατε ἀληθὲς κατὰ τοῦ θεράποντός μου Ιωβ. –
[8] Now then take seven bullocks, and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and he shall offer a burnt-offering for you. And my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will only accept him: for but his sake, I would have destroyed you, for ye have not spoken the truth against my servant Job.
[9] ἐπορεύθη δὲ Ελιφας ὁ Θαιμανίτης καὶ Βαλδαδ ὁ Σαυχίτης καὶ Σωφαρ ὁ Μιναῖος καὶ ἐποίησαν καθὼς συνέταξεν αὐτοῖς ὁ κύριος, καὶ ἔλυσεν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν αὐτοῖς διὰ Ιωβ.
[9] So Eliphaz the Thaemanite, and Baldad the Sauchite, and Sophar the Minaean, went and did as the Lord commanded them: and he pardoned their sin for the sake of Job.
[10] ὁ δὲ κύριος ηὔξησεν τὸν Ιωβ· εὐξαμένου δὲ αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ ἀφῆκεν αὐ τοῖς τὴν ἁμαρτίαν· ἔδωκεν δὲ ὁ κύριος διπλᾶ ὅσα ἦν ἔμπροσθεν Ιωβ εἰς διπλα σιασμόν.
[10] And the Lord prospered Job: and when he prayed also for his friends, he forgave them their sin: and the Lord gave Job twice as much, even the double of what he had before.
[11] ἤκουσαν δὲ πάντες οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ αἱ ἀδελφαὶ αὐτοῦ πάντα τὰ συμβεβηκότα αὐτῷ καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ πάντες ὅσοι ᾔδεισαν αὐτὸν ἐκ πρώτου· φαγόντες δὲ καὶ πιόντες παρ’ αὐτῷ παρεκάλεσαν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐθαύμασαν ἐπὶ πᾶσιν, οἷς ἐπήγαγεν αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος· ἔδωκεν δὲ αὐτῷ ἕκαστος ἀμνάδα μίαν καὶ τετράδραχμον χρυ σοῦν ἄσημον.
[11] And all his brethren and his sisters heard all that had happened to him, and they came to him, and so did all that had known him from the first: and they ate and drank with him, and comforted him, and wondered at all that the Lord had brought upon him: and each one gave him a lamb, and four drachms’ weight of gold, even of unstamped gold.
[12] ὁ δὲ κύριος εὐλόγησεν τὰ ἔσχατα Ιωβ ἢ τὰ ἔμπροσθεν· ἦν δὲ τὰ κτήνη αὐτοῦ πρόβατα μύρια τετρακισχίλια, κάμηλοι ἑξακισχίλιαι, ζεύγη βοῶν χίλια, ὄνοι θήλειαι νομάδες χίλιαι.
[12] And the Lord blessed the latter end of Job, more than the beginning: and his cattle were fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, a thousand she-asses of the pastures.
[13] γεννῶνται δὲ αὐτῷ υἱοὶ ἑπτὰ καὶ θυγατέρες τρεῖς·
[13] And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
[14] καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὴν μὲν πρώτην Ἡμέραν, τὴν δὲ δευτέραν Κασίαν, τὴν δὲ τρίτην Ἀμαλθείας κέρας·
[14] And he called the first Day, and the second Casia, and the third Amalthaea’s horn.
[15] καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθησαν κατὰ τὰς θυγατέρας Ιωβ βελτίους αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ὑπ’ οὐρανόν· ἔδωκεν δὲ αὐταῖς ὁ πατὴρ κληρονομίαν ἐν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς.
[15] And there were not found in comparison with the daughters of Job, fairer women than they in all the world: and their father gave them an inheritance among their brethren.
[16] ἔζησεν δὲ Ιωβ μετὰ τὴν πληγὴν ἔτη ἑκατὸν ἑβδομήκοντα, τὰ δὲ πάντα ἔζησεν ἔτη διακόσια τεσσαράκοντα ὀκτώ· 13καὶ εἶδεν Ιωβ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ τετάρτην γενεάν·
[16] And Job lived after his affliction a hundred and seventy years: and all the years he lived were two hundred and forty: and Job saw his sons and his sons’ sons, the fourth generation.
[17] 13καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν Ιωβ πρεσβύτερος καὶ πλήρης ἡμερῶν.507
[17] And Job died, an old man and full of days:
[17a] γέγραπται δὲ αὐτὸν πάλιν ἀναστήσεσθαι μεθ’ ὧν ὁ κύριος ἀνίστησιν. – –
[17a] and it is written that he will rise again with those whom the Lord raises up.
[17b] Οὗτος ἑρμηνεύεται ἐκ τῆς Συριακῆς βίβλου ἐν μὲν γῇ κατοικῶν τῇ Αυσίτιδι ἐπὶ τοῖς ὁρίοις τῆς Ιδου μαίας καὶ Ἀραβίας, προυπῆρχεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὄνομα Ιωβαβ·
[17b] This man is described in the Syriac book as living in the land of Ausis, on the borders of Idumea and Arabia: and his name before was Jobab;
[17c] λαβὼν δὲ γυναῖκα Ἀράβισσαν γεννᾷ υἱόν, ᾧ ὄνομα Εννων, ἦν δὲ αὐτὸς πατρὸς μὲν Ζαρε, τῶν Ησαυ υἱῶν υἱός, μητρὸς δὲ Βοσορρας, ὥστε εἶναι αὐτὸν πέμπτον ἀπὸ Αβρααμ.
[17c] and having taken an Arabian wife, he begot a son whose name was Ennon. And he himself was the son of his father Zare, one of the sons of Esau, and of his mother Bosorrha, so that he was the fifth from Abraam.

[17e] οἱ δὲ ἐλθόντες πρὸς αὐτὸν φίλοι· Ελιφας τῶν Ησαυ υἱῶν Θαιμανων βασιλεύς, Βαλδαδ ὁ Σαυχαίων τύραννος, Σωφαρ ὁ Μιναίων βασιλεύς.
[17e] And his friends who came to him were Eliphaz, of the children of Esau, king of the Thaemanites, Baldad sovereign the Sauchaeans, Sophar king of the Minaeans.

[1] Μακάριος ἀνήρ, ὃς οὐκ ἐπορεύθη ἐν βουλῇ ἀσεβῶν καὶ ἐν ὁδῷ ἁμαρτωλῶν οὐκ ἔστη καὶ ἐπὶ καθέδραν λοιμῶν οὐκ ἐκάθισεν,
[1] Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, and has not stood in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the seat of evil men.
[2] ἀλλ’ ἢ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ κυρίου τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ νόμῳ αὐτοῦ μελετήσει ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτός.
[2] But his pleasure is in the law of the Lord; and in his law will he meditate day and night.
[3] καὶ ἔσται ὡς τὸ ξύλον τὸ πεφυτευμένον παρὰ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὑδάτων, ὃ τὸν καρπὸν αὐτοῦ δώσει ἐν καιρῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ φύλλον αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπορρυήσεται· καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἂν ποιῇ, κατευοδωθήσεται.
[3] And he shall be as a tree planted by the brooks of waters, which shall yield its fruit in its season, and its leaf shall not fall off; and whatsoever he shall do shall be prospered.
