Worth the Wait

“If it is a girl, then she must surely be kicking up her heels in glee at the idea of a country dance,” he said. “And as long as it a safe and successful birth where I can hold you both in my arms when it is done, I care not.”
They spoke no more, sitting in companionable silence as the coach turned onto the drive of Seffington Park. By the time they reached the house, Daisy and Simon were standing out front to greet them along with Rachel.
Hugh climbed down first and then helped Augusta. Daisy screamed with delight while Rachel just stood wide eyed, taking in her rounded belly.
“Oh, my heavens!” Daisy exclaimed. “Look at you, keeping your secrets now! Though I daresay no one should be surprised with the way you two carry on. It’s shameful to see a married couple indulging in trysts that ought to be reserved as the sole endeavor of illicit couples!”
Simon rolled his eyes. “Daisy, hush… You’ve managed to insult them and me in the space of a heartbeat.”
She looked back at him with a cocked brow. “You were listening enough to notice! Simon, you devil.”
He winked at her, and then stepped forward to offer his congratulations as he ushered Hugh into the house, Daisy at his heels. Augusta linked arms with Rachel as they brought up the rear.
“You look very happy,” Rachel pointed out.
Augusta laughed. “Don’t gloat, Rachel. It is unbecoming.”
“Heaven forbid anyone but you say I told you so,” Rachel offered with a laugh as the butler closed the door behind them.
Augusta looked around, once more taking in the frescoed ceiling and the intricately carved molding. “This house will always be special to me.”
“Because you fell in love here?” Rachel asked.
“No. Because I was reminded how to love here. Not just Hugh… but dear, dear friends who risked my ire and so much more to bring me happiness. You are the dearest of friends, Rachel.”
Daisy poked her head out of the drawing room. “Good heavens! Don’t just stand there gawking. Get in here… the Misses Tate are coming and we must be prepared for another challenging round of charades!”
“Are you still certain you wish to remain at Seffington Park?” Rachel asked as they moved toward the drawing room and the awaiting disaster of the twins.
“Like all things, it’s charm waxes and wanes,” Augusta admitted.
“And has your husband’s charm waned?”
Augusta laughed as she scanned the room for him. He was already pouring brandy for himself and Simon. Given that they would endure the Misses Tate, she only wished she could indulge as well. He glanced back at her, his gaze sweeping over her in a very proprietary manner, and one that promised further entertainment after the parlor games were over. “On a daily basis,” she admitted, “But it’s only his charm that wanes. His love is constant as is mine.”
