“I’ve only been around for the anger stages before.” He walked them toward the restrooms. “Thanks for the heads-up.”
“No problem.”
She watched him half-carry Shayler to the bathroom, jealousy eating at her gut. Why couldn’t she have that? David was sensible and nice, and Shayler had managed to snag him even when she hadn’t been looking. Ansley, on the other hand, had been hoping for someone like that since Ben, and yet life had given her nothing. She set her glass down. There was no use thinking about it now. It was an occasion for celebration, not self-pity.
Music pumped from the speakers, and she did what she was good at. Ansley Falk forced a bright smile onto her face, scrunched her eyes and nose, and let out a shriek of laughter as she joined in some obnoxious twerk routine with Trish.
Smile. Dance. Be happy. She repeated the mantra in her mind as she wondered when the evening would end and she could go home. Not that Derek and Rebecca’s place was much of a home anymore. She could feel a frown start to blossom and grinned harder.
In a few days, she’d find a new home. It’d be perfect, and her roommate would be awesome. Ansley would find someone who loved online shopping, the Food Network, and the original Star Wars movies as much as she did. She’d stay there for the next few years until she got her degree in accounting, and then move out and start her career. And, later on when the timing was right, she’d find her soulmate, get married, and live happily ever after, with added emphasis on the happy.
But her brain screamed back at her the only word she knew to be true. Liar.
