“Are you okay, Gretel?”
She looked into his handsome face and smiled as happiness whirled around her. Sitting there with him made her feel appreciated. Someone cared about her. “I’m fine.”
“We appreciate all the help you’ve been, Gretel. I’m recommending that they push your paperwork ahead.”
“Really? Did my lawyer contact you?”
“Yes.”
“Thanks. I truly appreciate it. I just feel like there are so many loose ends. We still don’t know if The Shadows, the gang who stole from people who’d stolen, was real or imagined.”
“Yes, there are criminals who do that kind of thing. Is there an organized gang called The Shadows? Highly unlikely. Who were those men in the SUVs? Ryan crossed you, so I’m thinking they were the result of a person he crossed some time before he met you. They were looking for Ryan and for all we know they might’ve thought that I was Ryan. We have a similar height and similar build.”
“You look nothing alike.”
“Yes, but from a distance they could’ve easily mistaken me for him.”
“I guess that’s true.”
“What else are you bothered about?”
“Nothing.” She was bothered about a whole lot of things, but nothing she wanted to share with him. Monica was against her. Had she sent someone to spy on her, guessing she’d go back to the Welch house that night?
“You’ve done a good job for us, Gretel.”
“I have? I can’t help feeling I haven’t done much.”
He chuckled. “You flushed out Ryan Castle and because of you we’ve arrested Ryan Castle and Gizelle. Both of them killed Glen Welch, we know that now. It’ll be interesting to see if the jury believes Gizelle about it all being Ryan’s doing.”
“That will be good to watch—someone doing to him what he did to me.”
“Life comes full circle very often. Karma, if you believe in all that.”
“I hope he doesn’t leave the country.”
“He can try, but he won’t get very far.” He took a mouthful of coffee. “Stop looking so worried. We have to shelve the Welch case until the trial. I won’t let Ryan get away. I’ve told you that. Time to move onto our next job.”
She looked into his eyes. “I’m looking forward to it.” He was so handsome, so caring, so kind, and he believed in her. He deserved someone so much better than Monica. Someone … someone like her … perhaps?
